WWE SmackDown/ECW House Show Results (9/20/09) - Portland, Maine
Written by Kendra Bunyon on Sep 21, 2009 - 9:04:14 AM
What an amazing show! It's been so many years since I have been to a WWE show and this was so much better than any of the others, by far! WWE moving to HD has greatly improved their live shows!
The only thing that really bothered me was that we showed up about a half hour before bell time and were able to get front row seats. They might have been the last ones available, but that's still not good. Also, there were rows of empty seats behind us. Then the seats were fuller when they got to the next price range.
Match #1 - Cryme Tyme Vs. The Hart Dynasty
Cryme Tyme out first to huge pop and a lot of fan hand slapping. THD actually got a mixed reaction. Must admit I was thrilled to see them. Natalya got on the mic and ripped on Cryme Tyme for being from the hood. She said they're from the Dungeon. She went on and on and they giggled at her. Shad then got on mic and got the whole USA movement going - including chants. This was the funny match of the night. Kidd posed every time he did a move. JTG started mocking him. Then when Smith was in he did the same poses as Kidd and Shad also mocked him. They went back and forth through this long match, including Kidd and Natalya double suplexing JTG outside when the ref was distracted. Cryme Tyme also hit a move I don't remember seeing - but I might have missed it. JTG up on Shad and he basically hits an Alabama Slam onto Smith with JTG. It was very effective. Shad pinned Kidd for the win. The ref had to make THD leave the ring area. He actually had to grab Natalya and drag her back.
Winners - Cryme Tyme
The Bella Twins were way up in the stands, nose bleed section. They had a question for a man with four little kids. They were asked who the new IC Champion is. Of course they got it right and got front row seats for the rest of the show. They were soon seated next to us.
Match #2 - R-Truth Vs Drew McIntyre
The fans chanted for R-Truth and heat for Drew, but were a bit dead for the match. R-Truth did his flipping around the ring, but Drew came back with a sick DDT on R-Truth for three. Drew got on mic and did his normal schpeal, complaining about WWE not using him correctly and that he should be in the main event. The whole time Drew spoke, the two ref's were checking on R-Truth. Actually, they were kneeling over R-Truth and having a conversation and laughing while they were supposed to be making sure R-Truth was okay. One ref had to ‘help' R-Truth to the back.
Winner - Drew McIntyre
Match #3 - Kozlov & Zeke Jackson Vs Hurricane & Tommy Dreamer
The fans were thrilled to see Kozlov & Jackson, even though they're heels. They place popped hard for both Hurricane and Dreamer. Both of them went around slapping hands of all the fans they could reach. Dreamer especially was great with the kids. I caught Jackson cussing when things didn't go right (son of a bitch) and then Dreamer, right after that cussed (shit) fairly loudly. So much for the PG show and the little kids all around me! I noticed that Hurricane was bleeding from the back of his left hand, up by the wrist. Dreamer constantly yelled out encouragement to Hurricane when Dreamer was not in the ring. It wasn't bad, but was noticeable. Back and forth, Hurricane flew some and Dreamer fought hard, but Jackson took Dreamer down for three. After the match Dreamer sat on the apron talking to Justin Roberts. He was holding his elbow and it was obvious that he was in a world of hurt. Looks like maybe Dreamer shouldn't have been wrestling! Hopefully it's not really bad, but the way he was holding it after the match and as he left, wasn't good.
Winners - Kozlov & Jackson
Match #4 - Layla Vs Melina
Layla in beautiful shiny red ring gear. Melina came out and really worked the fans ringside. Lots of smiles and hand slaps. Melina looked very happy and pretty (much prettier than on TV) with her hair pulled back. Her split ring entrance and Layla acted all wimpy and tried to avoid the match at first. Then they went back and forth for a while. Melina is extremely flexible! She did a pinning bridge on Layla and bent over into a back bend while doing it. It was amazing! Layla managed to hit a creative pinning combination on Melina that really shocked me. Melina hit her split drop on Layla for three. Layla had to be helped out.
Winner - Melina
Match #5 - Dolph Ziggler Vs. Morrison (IC Championship)
Roberts announced it as an ECW Championship Match then corrected himself to say it was an IC Championship Match. Dolph on mic and talked big. He tried to introduce himself but Morrison's music cut him off. Morrison got huge pop from the fans. Morrison really worked the fans with hand slaps the way Melina did. Morrison got on mic and really ripped on Dolph's ring gear (blue shorts that were shiny and of an odd bubbly/open fabric). A couple of cheap pops, then, of course he got on to Mr. Ziggles and it was all over. The bell rang and the "Mr. Ziggles" chants started. Dolph fled the ring. The ref started counting him out. Every time Dolph would get in the ring, the "Mr. Ziggles" chants would start. Dolph played the frustration up beautifully. At one point he grabbed the mic and demanded personal apologies from all the fans and said the ref had to keep count of them all. Another time he grabbed the mic and said if the fans didn't stop he'd be leaving. The fans cheered and he quickly changed his mind about that. The fans loved Morrison. At one point Dolph had to readjust his interesting ring gear, but it didn't help as the lining kept sliding out around the back and inner part of his legs. After a long match Morrison hit his split leg corkscrew moonsault for three.
Winner - Morrison
Match #6 - Kane Vs Finlay
Kane had a long scratch on his abdomen that looked uncomfortable and I don't know how it happened. Kane actually got as much pop as heat. Finlay got good pop. Kane sold moves better than anyone else we saw. He was incredible! They fought harder than anyone else in the show. They hit harder, by far. It was obvious how much stiffer they worked than the rest. Kane removed the turnbuckle pad when the ref wasn't looking and then threw it at Roberts! The ref saw the padding and went to fix it. Finlay used that time to hit Kane with the sheleighly they end up outside. Big boot to Finlay that hit really hard. Finlay held his mouth as if something went a little wrong. After more back and forth, serious hard hitting of moves, and Kane hit his chokeslam to huge pop and for the three.
Winner - Kane
Match #7 - Ryder Vs Christian (ECW Champion)
Roberts actually announced this match correctly - Championship Match. Ryder out to decent heat. Christian came out and the fans loved him (but not as much as they loved Morrison). Christian threw some seriously impressive moves. I have always known he was good, but I think his time in TNA really added to just how good he is. So impressive. Flying head drop off the corner from Christian. I haven't seen that move in a long time. Christian hit the killswitch for three.
Winner - Christian
Match #8 - Matt Hardy Vs CM Punk (WHC)
This was also a title match! Punk came out and cut a great promo. He's wonderful on TV, but live is just that much better. He of course said Portland was the worst city he's ever been to (a couple times) after talking about being straight edge and our polluted society. The fans ate it up and hated him! People were screaming at him to shut up and get the hell out of the ring because he wasn't wanted, etc. Matt Hardy came out and about tore the roof off with the pop. This match went back and forth. They both worked really hard and put it all out there. Punk kept flashing egotistical smiles at the fans and acting all superior. Matt looked completely whooped at the end of this match. He really left it all in the ring. A very impressive match, but of course Punk retained. After the match Punk sat on the ring steps for a few minutes catching his breath. I don't know what happened between him and the fans over there, but as he left one woman was screaming at him that he was an asshole and then asking her husband if he could ‘believe what that jerk said?' It had to be interesting! Matt took a long time getting to his feet. Lots of pop and excitement to get him up. He posed with a hand in the air before staggering out.
Winner: CM Punk
That show just made me want more! It was the best show I have seen so far. It's depressing that WWE only comes to Maine once a year, if we're lucky. Guess I have to wait another year or so!
