WWE Moving Forward With Swagger, Invites Glenn Beck To Raw

WWE is moving forward with the Jack Swagger/Zeb Colter storyline as the company has invited political commentator Glenn Beck to Monday’s WWE Raw.

The company sent out the following press release on Friday:

STAMFORD, CONN. — WWE has extended an invitation to talk show host and political commentator, Glenn Beck to appear live this Monday on Raw, in response to a segment that aired on TheBlaze TV yesterday. In the segment, Beck references WWE as “stupid wrestling people,” when criticizing a recent WWE storyline involving WWE characters Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio®, Jack Swagger® and Zeb Colter®. WWE is giving Beck the opportunity to address our 14 million weekly viewers and our global fan base, as he believes we are offending our “conservative” fans with this storyline.

Similar to other television shows and feature films, WWE is in the entertainment business, creating fictional characters that serve as protagonists or antagonists. To create compelling and relevant content for our audience, it is important to incorporate current events into our storylines. WWE is creating a rivalry centered on a topical subject that has varying points of view. This storyline was developed to build the Mexican American character Del Rio into a hero given WWE’s large Latino base, which represents 20 percent of our audience.

I guess VKM loves the mainstream media attention he’s getting too much to abandon the heavy push of Swagger.

Vince is a whore for money, who’ll get rid of every principle he has to make a dime.
Or, as he likes to spin it, he’s a “good businessman.”

His objective is to get as much attention for his product as possible. Vince has every right to do whatever he can to bring in profits. Maybe if you knew how to run a business you would know this.

There’s really no difference between what you said and what I said. I just disagree with how Vince goes about it. By the way, I’ve been running a successful music production company since 2004.

Making a example of swagger would be pointless vince already suspended a few top talents mysterio and orton come to mind and people still act stupidly because its human nature

Regardless of political beliefs, I just really really don’t want to see Glen Beck Monday night, live or in a backstage segment. If he’s there I’d fine that the perfect time to go buy something.

I’m impressed with WWE’s apparent willingness to engage with criticism, especially with someone like Beck. Beck does not pull his punches and has a large audience; as a conservative, I fully understand why he was upset. From the outside, for someone not familiar with wrestling (as Beck fully admits), it certainly appears that Swagger and Zeb were repackaged as a deliberate and insulting parody of the Tea Party. The fact that WWE thrives on over-the-top characters, and especially that they don’t really push political agendas, is not immediately obvious.

If Beck agrees to show up, you can be sure that it will be a fascinating appearance. Beck will tell you exactly what he thinks, consequences be damned, and WWE will get to either back up their decision (in character) or explain what they were thinking (out of character). Be assured, though, Beck will not play kayfabe.

Beck declined the offer, saying “Unfortunately I am currently booked doing anything else.”

Beck is such a friggin’ phony. If you are going to call someone out you should have the guts to face that person when they offer to meet. That’s the problem with many in the media — they act like bullies but are never willing to fight when confronted. Beck would have pissed his pants if he went backstage, seeing that he would be surrounded by people he called “dumb.”

I am saddened and disappointed that Beck will not take the opportunity to impact so many people with this appearance. He had a chance to explain, in simple and direct terms, his beliefs and those of so many people who are represented by his voice. It’s too bad because I would pay to watch Beck being truthful (and ignoring kayfabe) in the middle of RAW for the world to see.
