WWE announced this evening that MVP has been released from his contract effective immediately earlier tonight. This is unusual as WWE does not normally publicly acknowledge a release until a worker has finished up all commitments with the company. MVP worked a match on Tuesday night from the Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia that was taped for tomorrow night's edition of Smackdown (full taping results).
MVP clarified on Twitter earlier tonight he did not get fired from WWE but instead asked for his release. Here's his exact Tweet: No need for alarm. I did not get fired . I asked for & received my release. I felt it was time to go international & freshen things up.
The former WWE United States Champion has been upset with his position in WWE for several months. I reported here on WrestlingNewsWorld.com on October 16th that sources close to MVP said he was unhappy in WWE and his days in the company "could be numbered".
MVP picked up on our story and quickly dismissed our report, accusing us of posting "unfounded" information. He did this to try and "save face" with WWE officials to prevent his spot from being further damaged in the company. I was assured by people close to MVP after his Tweet he was starting to explore options outside of WWE but he was denying any unhappiness in public.
MVP has always been considered a very talented worker but had been setback in WWE due to behavioral problems. His "know it all" attitude got him so much backstage heat in 2008 he did so many jobs it turned into a storyline that spanned five months. WWE slowly began to build MVP back up in early 2009 but he never achieved the success many felt was possible as his spot has dwindled towards the end of 2010. I even discussed MVP's unhappiness in WWE earlier today in the latest installment of the WNW Premium Mailbag.
As of now MVP will wait out his 90-day non-compete clause and will explore options on the independent scene. I would imagine he already has a plan in place as his release is something that has been building for months.
