Full Details On The Mike Adamle "Walk-Off" Angle That Was Done On Last Night's Edition Of ECW

Written by Richard Gray on Apr 30, 2008 - 10:33:04 AM

For those that missed it on last night's edition of ECW on Sci-Fi, Mike Adamle abruptly left his broadcast position at the ECW announce table before show's the main event. Tazz acted as if it were a shoot and followed Adamle out of the ringside area. The remainder of the program was silent, with replays and all airing without commentary. The entire deal was a work as within about fifteen minutes of the show going off of the air, WWE.com posted a worked follow-up article, passing it off like it was legitimate incident.

This is the second cliffhanger type angle that the company has done this week and will not be the last as they filmed another one for Friday's edition of SmackDown in which I will not spoil here. From what I have been told the new angles are an attempt to try and improve the lackluster ratings that WWE has done in recent weeks and also increase traffic to the official WWE website.

With ECW being taped before SmackDown, there were some people backstage that thought that Adamle walking out was a shoot because the talent was not notified about the angle before the show. The angle was written as a spinoff of a prior incident involving Mike Adamle back in 1999 when he worked as a sports anchor for the Chicago news station WMAQ-Channel 5. According to a report by the Chicago Sun-Times, Adamle was upset when he was told that he had to cut out the final story from his sportscast because the newscast was running long. Adamle removed his microphone and walked off the set causing the news station to immediately go to commercial break.

Richard Reacts: I'm not sure where WWE plans to go with the angle but I liked it. The show was very boring and dull but when Adamle walked out and Tazz followed, it actually seemed like a real life situation. WWE tried to accomplish that same feeling with the ending to Raw but with most fans knowing that William Regal is just an on-screen character and not a real WWE executive, it was much easier to decipher as a work. It is about time that WWE threw some curve balls to get people back on the edge of their seats and tried to increase their audience.
