I know the Indian wrestling scene pretty well and can easily make out when the media is over hyping something.
In the case of The Great Khali they haven't done so.
He has easily become one of the biggest things not only to happen to the Indian wrestling scene but the WWE as well.
His fame has been so phenomenal that Khali is being honored by the State government of Himachal Pradesh at a felicitation ceremony.The Punjab police who initially wanted an explanation for his 'sick leave' have realized the growth of his fame and have promoted him from being a constable to a sub- inspector in the Punjab Armed Police.
He was also felicitated in New Delhi by the President Of India.
Khali made a public appearance in front of 32,000 people at an exhibition ground in Delhi where he said the opponent he enjoyed beating up the most was Batista.
He is also being paid around $300,000 to act in a Bollywood movie-'Ramaa-The Saviour'.
In India he is expected to sign a few more films.
His popularity has reached such a level that top players from India's #1 sport have been asking him to attend Cricket matches currently taking place in The Indian Premier League which is a Cricket league that generates about a Billion dollars in revenue during it's 1 and a half month tenure.
Stone Cold Steve Austin also spoke about his friendship with Khali and said he was interested in acting in a Bollywood movie. Austin like Khali is extremely popular in India and his movie 'The Condemned' is being dubbed in Hindi and released in the Indian market. Read more here.
Khali's visit has been so popular that WWE executives accompanying him have themselves been surprised.I will not be surprised if they expand operations in India.
Later in a press conference when Khali was asked about maybe wanting a girl or a boy child he jokingly said that He wanted a 'Young Great Khali' with whom he could have tag team matches.
