The Los Angeles Times ran an article today reporting that the announcement of the USA Network renewing their deal with WWE for Monday Night Raw could foreshadow a bigger deal. The publication speculates that NBC Universal might be a potential partner for the new cable network that Vince McMahon wants to start wihtin the next 18 months.
The Los Angeles Times mentions how NBC Universal was partners with WWE for the XFL and NBC Universal sports chief Dick Ebersol has a long relationship with Vince McMahon.
There have been "very preliminary chats" between WWE and NBC Universal about working together on the WWE network. Universal HD, owned by NBC Universal, is a channel that may fit the bill. The network is only available in 55 million homes, but the inclusion of WWE programming could quickly change that. Furthermore, Comcast is closing in on taking control of NBC Universal, which would bode well for WWE as Comcast has cable systems reaching almost 25% of the country.
