WWE Raw Results (8/30/10) - Wade Barrett Stands Tall

Written by Richard Gray on Aug 30, 2010 - 11:14:16 PM

WWE Raw Results - August 30, 2010
TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts
Report by: Richard Gray of WrestlingNewsWorld.com

The show opens with the same package they've been playing on the official WWE website all day, touting the fact Raw is the longest running show in cable history. They show clips from memorable past episodes. Cue normal Raw opener.

The pyrotechnics explode to the Raw theme by Nickelback. Michael Cole gives us the formal welcome for the "900th consecutive week". They announce the main event 5-on-5 Elimination Tag Team Match later tonight.

Opening segment
- Bret Hart, Kane & The Undertaker

Bret Hart's music hits and out he comes for the opening segment. 17 years, 8 months is how long Raw has been running - Michael Cole reminds us. Hello Boston - long time; no see, Hart opens. 17 years ago a show debuted called Monday Night Raw. Hart says he has to confess he didn't think Monday Night Raw would even catch on. He says thanks to all of you; 17 years and 900 episodes later, it looks like it's doing pretty d--- good. In fact, Monday Night Raw has the most shows in the history of prime time television. He emphasizes in the history of prime time. Hart says there was only one wrestler left that was with him for the first episode and that's The Undertaker. Hart says he thought it "might be appropriate..." he's cut off by Kane's pyros going off and music starting. Kane comes out to the ring.

Kane gets in the ring and grabs a microphone. He says The Undertaker... there is no Undertaker... anymore. Thanks to me, physically decimating him and leaving him to rot in a vegetative state The Undertaker is a phenom no longer. Kane says he's not phenomenal in any way - he's just a man, just a man. The crowd starts chanting "Under-taker". Kane says Undertaker is like you Bret. Weak, feeble, scraggly, over-the-hill, irreversibly damaged. The last time my brother was truly The Undertaker was at Wrestlemania when he ended the career of Shawn Michaels. Kane told Bret he must have loved that. Seeing Shawn Michaels, who he seemingly made amends with, but utterly despised watching him put to rest. Bret says the only thing he's going to savor is watching The Undertaker beat Kane like he always does. Kane says the only thing he's wanted his entire life, more than anything else was to break out of his brother's shadow and show he is the devil's favorite demon. The Undertaker took out an icon in Shawn Michaels that means he needs to take out an icon of his own. Kane says he needs to take out Hart. He throws down the mic and chokes him.

The Hart Dynasty come out and make the save. Kane fights them off, then Bret. The lights go out, when they come back on, The Undertaker is in the ring. A staredown ensues. Kane roles out of the ring over the top rope and down the ramp. He says not yet as a General Manager email comes in. Michael Cole says he's received an email from the General Manager and I quote, I see this iconic moment taking place and in honor of Raw's 900th episode and despite my reluctance in the past we will have a main event fitting this historic occasion tonight. Bret "The Hitman" Hart versus The Undertaker.

They role a clip from episode #1 of WWE Raw on January 11, 1993.

Richard Reacts: Nostalgic opener which assures the program between Kane and The Undertaker. Undertaker's moving slow but no way Hart actually "works a match" tonight.

- Commercial Break -

We're back and shown is a clip of episode #279 on September 28, 1998 with Steve Austin on a Zamboni.

Triple Threat Tag Team Match
- Kofi Kingston & Michael McGillicutty vs. Kaval & Daniel Bryan vs. Alex Riley & United States Champion The Miz

Ouch, the only team that actually got a televised intro was The Miz and Alex Riley. Tomorrow night is the season finale of WWE NXT Season 2.

The start:

It's Riley, Kofi and Daniel Bryan in the ring. Riley is on the offensive but Kofi hits a dropkick for the first cover.

Mid-match notes:

Daniel Bryan breaks it up then lands offense on Kofi. He hits The Miz on the apron then is attacked by Alex Riley. Back and forth action by all in the ring. Riley gets a quick cover on Kingston and follows it with more offense. Riley goes off the ropes but Daniel counters. Kingston runs over and takes out Daniel. Kingston leg drops Riley and goes for the cover but Bryan breaks it up.

Bryan whips Kofi off the ropes then is caught in a splash in the middle of the ring. Kaval wants a tag, as does McGillicutty. Tags are made as Kaval applies a submission hold on McGillicutty. Alex Riley breaks it up. Three Rookies in the ring as The Miz tags himself in. He's knocked off the apron when McGillicutty nearly steals the win with a pin on Kaval.

The finish:

Kaval lands offense on McGillicutty in a counter then goes off the top rope and hits his Double foot stomp but The Miz sneaks up behind him and hits the Skull Crushing Finale followed by the pin to get the win.

Winners - The Miz & Alex Riley

After the match, The Miz unloads the Money in the Bank briefcase on Daniel Bryan. Michael Cole says Daniel still has a heck of a lot to learn, welcome to the big time.

Richard Reacts: Wow, way to cheapen the return of Daniel Bryan. The only thing that saved SummerSlam and now he's part of a job without a televised entrance. Things never change in WWE. Back to being humbled? It sure looks like it. They gave the ring time to the Season 2 guys to promote tomorrow night's finale but everyone except The Miz (including Kofi Kingston) looked as insignificant as insignificant gets.

Cole and Lawler run down tonight's main events.

- Commercial Break -

LayCool were featured in the Raw Recall. Back from break, they're in the ring (so it looks like a number of non-televised entrances tonight). Melina and Eve are out next.

Tag Team Match
- WWE Women's Champions Layla & Michelle McCool vs. WWE Divas Champion Melina & Eve

The start:

The bell rings and it's McCool and Melina. Melina takes out Layla on the apron then McCool hits a terrible belly-to-belly into a cover.

Mid-match notes:

Layla in on the tag as she takes Melina down to the mat.

The finish:

No offense at all from Layla as McCool falls off the apron before a tag can be made. The distraction allows Melina to cover Layla to get the three count and the win.

Winners - Melina & Eve

After the match, Michelle McCool and Layla challenge her to a unification match at Night of Champions. Whoever wins, unifies the WWE Women's and WWE Divas Championships. Melina accepts but under one condition, that it's a lumberjack match. Layla and McCool both say fine. Melina's music plays as the lumberjacks or lumberjills in this case come out.

Richard Reacts: Terrible match. Very little work but the work I saw left a lot to be desired.

A clip from episode #889 on June 7, 2010 is shown. They show The Nexus' first beatdown on John Cena that lead to Daniel Bryan's firing.

Backstage, The Nexus is featured. Michael Tarver confirms Skip Sheffield broke his ankle. He says now that they've kicked Darren Young out and Sheffield is hurt people think they're week. Wade Barrett says at Night of Champions he's going to become WWE Champion - think that will make them look week? Barrett says to remove all doubt what-so-ever they need to do something tonight that's going to keep people talking forever and he knows what that is.

They show a promo for the movie Legendary starring John Cena.

- Commercial Break -

A clip from episode #860 on September 7, 2009 featuring Bob Barker as guest host is shown.

Backstage, Josh Mathews asks Chris Jericho what the future holds for him. Jericho tells him enough of his useless platitudes. He says he's the best because it's true but sometimes he thinks he's the only one that believes it's true. Jericho says he had an epiphany - if he doesn't win the WWE Championship at Night of Champions he's gone for good. Jericho says tonight he's going to prove to The Nexus and all the hypocrites watching he's the best in the world at what he does.

Richard Reacts: Interesting stipulation added on Jericho for Night of Champions. His contract is up next month so I'll see what I can find out. I heard he was going to re-sign but things may have changed.

John Morrison and R-Truth each come out for their match.

- Commercial Break -

Number One Contenders Tag Team Match
- John Morrison & R-Truth vs. "Dashing" Cody Rhodes & Drew McIntyre

The start:

Cody Rhodes and R-Truth start things out. They go to lockup but Rhodes goes on the offensive. Rhodes hits a cheap shot on Morrison, knocking him off the apron. Morrison gets in the ring as does McIntyre. It's broken down with all four in the ring. McIntyre is taking out Morrison while R-Truth is going at it with Rhodes. The match is thrown out.

Winners - No contest

Morrison takes out McIntyre on the General Manager podium outside the ring. R-Truth's music plays as he and Morrison go down the ramp.

Richard Reacts: None of that made any sense.

- Commercial Break -

A clip from episode #867 on January 4, 2010 featuring Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels airs. Prior to the clip, a ridiculous "Did You Know" type fact was shown, explaining Jersey Shore, at it's current rate, would be in the year 2083 to get to 900 episodes. Snooki would also be older than Betty White (96 years old). What?

Singles Match
- Bret Hart vs. The Undertaker

Before this match can get going, the music of The Nexus hits and Wade Barrett comes out with a microphone. Barrett says this match is not going to happen. Because when people talk about the 900th episode of Raw they don't want to talk about two legends, they want to talk about the future. The future is Nexus. Barrett says as the leader of The Nexus he said earlier today he was going to do something unforgettable. He's going to do that tonight by taking Bret Hart's place in this match.

Barrett gets in the ring, Hart watches. Undertaker squashes him, clotheslining him out of the ring. The gong hits, lights go out. They come back on and Kane is in the ring with The Undertaker. Kane and Undertaker fight back and forth but the lights go out again and the gong hits twice. When the lights come back on, The Undertaker is alone. The music of The Nexus hits and the remaining four come out.

Heath Slater, Justin Gabriel, David Otunga, Michael Tarver and Wade Barrett surround the ring. The Undertaker takes them all out and nearly chokeslams Barrett but the lights go out again. When they come back on, Barrett has The Undertaker up and hits Wasteland. Kane watches from the ramp as Justin Gabriel hits the 450 splash on The Undertaker. The Nexus look over The Undertaker. Kane looks on from the ramp.

The Nexus is getting a ton of heat from the crowd. The Undertaker, selling, slowly gets up and lies back down. Kane laughs from the top of the ramp.

Richard Reacts: I was going to get all over WWE creative if they made The Nexus look weak. They didn't and the segment got them even more heat with the beatdown of The Undertaker. I didn't expect The Undertaker to face Bret Hart and you shouldn't have either. There was no match but this is the first segment of the night I'll give a thumbs up. Some people may be getting tired of The Nexus and their beatdowns but they drew very solid heat there.

- Commercial Break -

Back from break, a shot of Fenway Park is shown. We're shown a replay from "Moments Ago" of what just happened with the attack of The Nexus on The Undertaker.

Jack Swagger comes out with a mic in his hand. He says when he left Raw he was an all-American, American, American now he returns a former World Champion. He can understand why Johnny Damon may not want to come back to Boston but he can promise he has no problem bringing a little Swagger back to Raw. Evan Bourne's music cuts him off and he comes out.

Smackdown vs. Raw Singles Match
- Jack Swagger vs. Evan Bourne

The start:

Swagger kicks Bourne in the midsection and follows with offense. Swagger dominates Bourne early on but Bourne fights back with a kick to his legs. Alberto Del Rio's music hits during the middle of the match.

Mid-match notes:

Del Rio pulls out in a Bentley. His own ring announcer introduces him as Swagger vs. Bourne continues on in the ring. In the ring, Swagger is burying his head in the midsection of Boure. We have a slit screen, half focused on Del Rio and half focused on the match.

The finish:

Back to the match, Bourne goes to the top rope and goes for the Shooting Star Press. Swagger gets out of the way and locks in the ankle lock. Bourne taps out.

Winner - Jack Swagger

Before Swagger's music even stops, Alberto Del Rio introduces himself. He berates Rey Mysterio and says because of him he's not going to be here tonight. He says the only place you can see Rey is in the hospital and what he did to him last week was phenomenal and just incredible. Del Rio says his audience from Raw didn't see what he did to Mysterio so he's going to recreate that magic moment right here, right now but with a different chiwawa.

Del Rio grabs a chair and gets in the ring. He takes it to Evan Bourne, sending him to the outside. On the outside, he puts the chair on Bourne's arm but Mark Henry out for the save. Henry runs into Del Rio, knocking the chair away from him. Del Rio retreats while Henry yells at him from ringside.

We got to Cole and Lawler. Cole puts over their live event a couple of weeks ago in China. Cue footage from WWE in Shanghai - the company's first live event in China. Sheamus, The Miz and Chris Jericho were all shown talking to the media as babyfaces. Big Show, Rey Mysterio and John Cena were all highlighted in particular.

- Commercial Break -

A clip from episode #331 on September 27, 1999 featuring Mankind and The Rock is shown.

CM Punk comes out with Luke Gallows and Joey Mercury. They pose down in the ring upon entering. Punk asks the fans if they know who he's better than. He says The Rock. He doesn't drink, he doesn't smoke and I don't make crappy moves like The Tooth Fairy. Do you people like The Rock? He asks if they miss The Rock on Monday Night Raw. He says he doesn't miss The Rock because he epitomizes this septic tank of a show they call Raw. He says he'll give them credit for 900 episodes but it promotes poor family values. For those that do not agree he has two words for them - Katie Vick. If people watching do not know what he's talking about, he tells them to YouTube it and it will drive them to drink. Punk gives some examples:

Exhibit A cue footage from episode #824 on March 9, 2009 of Triple H breaking into Randy Orton's house.

Next is an example of wreck less behavior on episode #691 on August 21, 2006 in Exhibit B.

Exhibit C is trespassing on episode #257 on April 27, 1998 where DeGeneration X invaded the WCW show.

And last and certainly least in Punk's humble opinion, exhibit D for dumb. Role footage of episode #304 on March 22, 1999 with Austin spraying the beer hose.

Punk says he can't even find the words to describe the shame for these people to cheer for a man like Austin. Punk says you people would take out a second mortgage just to see Austin walk down the ramp and spray him with beer via fire hose. Austin's music hits and the crowd erupts. The Straight Edge Society act stunned but laugh as the music stops. Punk rolls in the ring, telling the crowd they fell for it. Punk says how disappointed they are that's how he feels when he sees each and everyone of the fans. He's not sorry he made them feel this way - he's happy they're disappointed. Punk offers a clip from a really, really good show called Smackdown

Episode #199 on June 12, 2003 is shown where Brock Lesnar superplexed Big Show causing the ring to fall apart. Punk says he could watch that clip over and over again because it represents everything he couldn't be. Criminally obese. He doesn't know who the other guy was (Lesnar) but talked about Big Show. Big Show's music hits and he comes out with a mic. Punk said they play Austin's music then they get Captain Insano.

Show said you want to talk about embarrassing don't make a fat joke because he lost weight and he found it. He said talk about the tainted burrito Eddie Guerrero gave him that gave him chronic diarrhea or the time he did the sumo wrestling with the thing wrapped around him. Or when he got caught on video kissing Vickie Guerrero. But a fat joke. He loves to make people laugh, he does impressions all the time. Show does a Hulk Hogan impression. Punk said I thought you said something about being entertaining because that was boring - you're not funny and nobody likes you. Show tells him that was mean. Punk questions him asking for a high five saying there is nothing high about the Straight Edge Society and that is what makes them better than him. Show says he's not high he's just tall. Show ends up taking out Punk, Mercury retreats then Show takes out Gallows.

Richard Reacts: I enjoyed the clips of nostalgia and can actually remember watching each one of those shows live. Does that mean I've watched too much wrestling? Hmmm...

- Commercial Break -

A clip from episode #450 on January 7, 2002 featuring one of the returns of Triple H. He takes out Kurt Angle in the segment.

Josh Mathews is at the top of the ramp and welcomes WWE Champion Sheamus to ringside. Sheamus' music hits and he comes out to talk to Mathews. Mathews asks him about Night of Champions in three weeks. Sheamus cuts him off and says everyone is here to celebrate 900 episodes of Raw - everyone except one man - Triple H. He's not there all because of him and he's never coming back. He guesses that is why he has five different opponents at Night of Champions.

Sheamus questions how is that far. He talks down the crowd and says the only real Irishman in the city of Boston is him. He talks about the Elimination Tag Team Match tonight and how his team tonight features Randy Orton. A man that tried to end his career, put him in the hospital. Sheamus says he's being discriminated against. Edge's music hits and cuts him off.

Edge, in a mocking Irish accent, tells Sheamus he's giving him a headache. He says since episode #265 when he made his Raw debut he's experienced it all (interesting he mentioned Matt Hardy as a deranged ex-employee). He's won the Royal Rumble, the King of the Ring, the first ever Money in the Bank winner but he's going to add one more. He's going to win the 6-Pack Challenge at Night of Champions and he's going to become the new WWE Champion.

- Commercial Break -

Edge and Sheamus are in the ring arguing as Chris Jericho comes out next followed by Randy Orton and John Cena. The Nexus come out together to heat from the crowd.

- Commercial Break -

5-on-5 Tag Team Elimination Match
- WWE Champion Sheamus, Edge, Chris Jericho, Randy Orton & Edge vs. The Nexus members Wade Barrett, David Otunga, Justin Gabriel, Heath Slater & Michael Tarver

The start:

The bell rings and Chris Jericho and Michael Tarver start things out. They circle one another but Jericho gets out when the crowd was chanting "Y2J" and laughs from the ramp. He gets himself counted out.

Mid-match notes:

Chris Jericho eliminated

Now it's Edge against Michael Tarver. Edge knocks Charles Robinson down, getting himself disqualified.

Edge eliminated

John Cena versus Tarver now. Cena hits some rights followed by a bulldog on Tarver. He backs Tarver into his team's corner and tags in Sheamus. Sheamus attacks Tarver and hits a big clothesline followed by a two count. Heath Slater tags in but eats a clothesline from Sheamus. Suplex by Sheamus followed by a cover for a two count. Stiff right hand from Sheamus on Slater. He picks him up and bounces his head off the turnbuckle. Sheamus works over Slater's midsection and knocks him to apron.

Sheamus gets outside and lands an elbow to his opponent's throat. Sheamus rolls Slater back in the ring and gets another two count. David Otunga comes in off a tag of Slater. Sideheadlock from Otunga but Sheamus battles out. Otunga poses and Sheamus gives him a clohtesline. Otunga counters but Sheamus puts him back on the mat and connects with boots in the corner. Sheamus sends Otunga into the corner and Slater tags in.

Slater violently kicks Sheamus into the mat several times before tagging in Justin Gabriel. Gabriel lands offense on Sheamus and tags in Wade Barrett. They double team Sheamus and Barrett hits single offense before tagging in Slater. Slater applies a submission hold on Sheamus on the mat. Sheamus gets to his feet and counters out with a backslide. Sheamus goes for the High Cross but Slater counters out.

Sheamus takes Barrett and Tarver off the apron then Otunga but Gabriel connected offense on him, allowing Slater to get the pin on him. Sheamus eliminated.

John Cena is in and is working on Heath Slater. Five Knuckle Shuffle then the Attitude Adjustment to eliminate him. Heath Slater eliminated.

Wade Barrett gets in the ring and violently dumps Cena to the outside. Barrett distracts the referee while the other members take cheap shots at Cena. Barrett goes to the outside when the other members of The Nexus get back on the apron. He slams Cena's head off the announce table and rolls him back into the ring. Two count for Barrett on Cena. Gabriel tags in and hits a high kick on Cena with Barrett holding him.

Gabriel tries an illegal choke but ends up distracting the referee for Barrett to hit cheap shots. Gabriel covers Cena for a two count. Splash in the corner from Gabriel on Cena, two count. Otunga tags in and continues to dominate Cena. Cena counters Otunga's suplex to hit one of his own. A couple of counters but Cena makes Otunga tap in the STF. David Otunga eliminated.

Justin Gabriel hits the 450 splash on Cena and pins him. Justin Gabriel eliminated. When he celebrates, Orton hits the RKO and eliminates him with a pin. Justin Gabriel eliminated. Orton hits the RKO on Michael Tarver when Tarver went for offense then pins him. Michael Tarver eliminated.

The finish:

It's down to Barrett and Orton but this isn't going to take long. Barrett hits The Wasteland and pins Orton to win the match.

Winner - Wade Barrett

Richard Reacts: Not a bad television bout to end the show. It was short and the eliminations happened quick but I really like Wade Barrett standing tall to end the match. Things are changing in WWE, the company is clearly in a major transition.
