Event: WWE Royal Rumble Pay-Per-View
Airdate: Sunday, January 27th, 2008 (Live On PPV)
Location: Madison Square Garden In New York, New York
We're live from Madison Square Garden in New York City! The world's most famous arena is jam packed and we are live on pay-per-view! The pyros explode and the live crowd roars. This event is presented in WWE HD. For the 21st time, Michael Cole welcomes us to sold out Madison Square Garden. He gives the official attendance figure which is over 20,000 people.
Justin Roberts is in the ring and says that the first match of the night is a "Career Threatening Match" and if Ric Flair loses he must retire tonight.
Ric Flair vs. MVP
Career Threatening Match
Ric Flair's music hits as he makes his way to ringside. Flair gets a decent pop as we go to Jonathan Coachman and Michael Cole who discuss the upcoming contest. Flair is in the ring with a microphone. He gives a WOOOOO and tells the fans what a great honor it has been to wrestle for many years of his career in Madison Square Garden. Flair says he agrees that there is not any other place in the world like it. He said he had his first match in MSG in March 1976, long before most of the people in attendance were born. He thanks the fans for the amount of respect that they have paid him for all of these years. Flair says that he wants everyone to know...
MVP's music interrupts as he comes to ringside. Justin Roberts goes ahead and announces the WWE United States Champion MVP. MVP gets in with black ring gear. Flair is wearing black trunks and black boots. The referee lets MVP get his shirt off as he calls for the opening bell. Flair and MVP circle one another, sizing each other up. MVP gives Flair a side headlock as he looks for opening control. Flair gets up and gives him a WOOOO as they size each other up again before locking up for another time. The referee counts to three and breaks the lockup.
Flair goes to work on MVP's left arm. MVP smacks Flair in the face, Flair counters with his backhand chops. The crowd is behind Flair with WOOOOOs. MVP counters with a take down. MVP stalks Flair as he connects with a monster boot to the face of The Nature Boy. MVP hits a neckbreaker and gets the first cover of the night. He gets a short 2 count. MVP gets another cover but Flair counters with a HUGE backhand chop. MVP goes back on the offensive by locking a submission hold. The US Champion gets Flair up and goes to work on him. He whips Flair into the ropes but he counters with an elbow. Flair gets MVP on the mat and goes for the Figure Four. It's unsuccessful but Flair remains in control for an inverted atmoic drop. MVP counters and gets a two count after Flair tried to lock the Figure Four again.
MVP goes to work on Flair in the turnbuckles. He gives him an Irish Whip and hits a back-body drop. MVP hits another huge boot to Flair's face with Flair in the turnbuckles. MVP goes for the cover, it appears that he has the three count but Flair had his foot on the ropes. MVP argues with the referee as Flair nearly gets the pinfall. MVP hits a clothesline then nails a supplex for another cover. MVP picks Flair up and sets him up on the top turnbuckle. MVP supplexes Flair off of the top rope. We see a replay where the referee actually gave MVP the three count but noticed Flair's foot was on the ropes and vetoed his decision (looks like a referee mistake there). Flair is able to counter enough to regain a little momentum with a backhand chop and another cover. Flair gives MVP a backslide and gets another near fall. Flair backs MVP up with hard chops. The crowd is behind Flair every time he connects. MVP counters with jaw breaker on Flair, he goes for the Playmaker. Flair counters by hooking the Figure Four leglock. Much to my surprise the US Champion MVP taps out to Ric Flair, keeping his career alive.
Winner - Ric Flair (career continues)
We're backstage with Mr. McMahon and Hornswoggle. McMahon tells Horny that he is his only bastard son. He tells him that he needs to realize that he can't trust anyone and in the Rumble match it's every man for himself. McMahon tells Horny that he can't even trust Finlay and he expects him to win. Finlay walks in. McMahon tells Finlay that he was just telling Hornswoggle that he can't trust anyone. McMahon repeats - you can't trust anyone. Finlay asks McMahon what exactly he means by that. Vince tells Finlay that he can't trust the little guy. Finlay and Horny walk out together as McMahon looks on with a mischievous look on his face. Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler are on commentary as they show the media coverage from Royal Rumble.
Jim Ross sends us to Mike Adamle as he explains that he is debuting tonight with WWE. Adamle is in the crowd as he congratulates Ric Flair; he moves on to talk about the feud between JBL and Chris Jericho. They role a video package highlighting the feud. It is interesting to note that JR mentioned Adamle's career as an XFL sideline reporter. Adamle looks a lot older from his days on American Gladiators and I'm watching in Standard Definition but it still looks like he's got a ton of makeup on.
Chris Jericho vs. JBL
Chris Jericho is out to the ring first. Jericho gets in the ring and pumps the crowd. They cut to a shot of the huge crowd as it seems that Jericho is still not receiving a very big pop from the live crowd. John "Bradshaw" Layfield is out next but he is not in his limo. He simply walks to ringside with a towel around his neck. The opening bell rings as the two men lock up. Jericho pushes JBL into one corner of the ring as the referee makes him break the hold. JBL seems tentative in the early going. JBL stares Jericho down as they lock up once again. The referee once again breaks the hold.
They lock up again as JBL goes for the ropes. Another break. JBL connects on several stiff right hands. Jericho whips himself off of the ropes and connects with right hands of his own. Jericho takes JBL to the mat and hits more right hands. JBL sends Jericho to the outside but Jericho is right back in. Jericho hits more right hands before kicking JBL in the midsection as JBL is down on all fours in the center of the ring. Jericho gets JBL in Walls of Jericho but JBL gets the rope and the hold is broken after a count of three. JBL gets to the outside as Jericho hits a baseball slide before he comes to the outside. Jericho bounces JBL off of the security rail and attempts a supplex. He can't get JBL up so he throws him into the steel ring stairs. Jericho roles JBL back into the ring to avoid getting counted out. Jericho jumps as JBL causes him to land on the top rope on his "injured" neck.
Jericho sells his "neck injuries" as JBL gets him to his feet and nails a Clothesline from Hell. JBL picks Jericho up and sends him back to the mat. Bradshaw goes to work on the throat of Jericho. JBL gets Jericho into a corner of the ring and nails several right hands. Jericho starts to fight back in the center of the ring with right hands. Bradshaw whips Jericho off of the ropes and into a Sleeper hold. Jericho goes down to the mat as the referee checks for submission. They are in the middle of the ring. JBL wrenches on the Sleeper as Jericho somehow makes it to his feet. Jericho delivers some elbows to JBL's midsection. Jericho whips himself off of the ropes and nails a clothesline on JBL. Both men are down in the middle of the ring, the referee begins the double count out.
Both men are up as Jericho hits some right hands. JBL counters by driving Jericho's shoulder into the steel ring post. JR says that Jericho may have nailed his head. He has as Jericho is now bleeding profusely from the head on the outside. JBL goes to work on him on the outside. JBL roles Jericho back into the ring. Blood continues to poor from Jericho's head as JBL nails several right hands and kicks to the head of Jericho. Jericho's chest is covered in blood as JBL stomps away at Chris as he is in the corner of the ring. Somehow Jericho begins to counter as he gets JBL down and nails several elbows and a Lion Sault. Jericho's a bloody mess as he delivers a clothesline on JBL that sends both men to the outside. The fight ensues as JBL counters by nailing Jericho's face off of the announcer's table. Jericho out of nowhere nails a chairshot to the face of JBL. The referee calls for the bell.
Winner via DQ JBL
Jericho doesn't stop just because the match was called. He throws the steel chair into the ring and jumps on JBL to give him more right hands. Jericho goes to the outside to get some cable. He gets in the ring and wraps the cable around JBL's throat. Jericho wrenches back as blood pours from his forehead. Jericho is standing on the ECW announce table as he pulls the cable wrapped around JBL's throat who is in the ring! He stops long enough for his music to start playing as he wrenches again before another referee pulls him away. Jericho, blood covered, makes his way to the back with JBL out in the center of the ring. There is blood everywhere!
Lilian Garcia tells the crowd that the winner of the match as a result of a Disqualification is John "Bradshaw" Layfield. The crowd boos as the referee checks on JBL on the outside. The blood added to this short PPV match. It was pretty much everything I expected as a hardcore match with no hardcore stipulation. This setup the perfect DQ call, giving JBL the win without damaging Jericho. We're backstage with Ashley Massaro knocking on Maria's locker room. Santino Marella comes out and says that Maria is in there preparing for the first ever HD Kiss Cam. Santino tells Ashley that Maria is not interested in her or her booby magazine. We go to a promo that says WrestleMania XXIV is 63 days away. We go to Cole and Coachman. We are shown a video package of Edge's relationship with Vickie Guerrero. We are also shown the framework leading up to Edge's feud with Rey Mysterio. It looks like the World Heavyweight Championship match will be up next.

The referee holds the World Heavyweight Championship as Justin Roberts announces both competitors. He pronounces Rey's name with a Spanish accident highlighted. The referee goes over the rules with the competitors and calls for the opening bell. Both men circle one another. Edge pushes The Challenger. Mysterio looks on, they circle once again. The crowd chants "let's go Rey" as Edge goes to work on Mysterio's arm.
Rey Mysterio counters with a kick to Edge's leg. Mysterio hits the hurricanrana but it didn't fully connect. Both men are back on their feet as they lockup again. Side headlock on Edge, he counters out. Mysterio counters with a dropkick to Edge. Edge appears surprised as his posse looks on from ringside. Edge nails a right hand and chokes him in the middle rope for three. Edge sends Mysterio through the bottom rope. Mysterio back to his feet but Edge connects a baseball slide. Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder go for Mysterio but before they can touch him, the referee sees them and ejects them from ringside. Edge goes off the top rope with some high flying antics. Edge slips to the outside, Mysterio over the top to the outside. The double count out ensues as he brings Edge back in. Mysterio off the top back in the ring. Rey connects more kicks to Edge's knee. Mysterio leap frogs Edge and lands on the middle rope. Edge knocks him off with a vicious kick to the knee. Mysterio limps out of the ring, Edge follows.
Edge puts Mysterio back in the ring. He stomps at Mysterio who is on all fours. Mysterio is selling his left knee as Edge pumps the crowd, they boo him. The World Heavyweight Champion goes right back to the left knee of Mysterio. He locks a submission maneuver, the referee checks for submission. Edge wrenches back on his hold but Mysterio gets out with kicks to Edge's face. Mysterio fights back with some high flying tactics. Edge locks on the submission hold on Mysterio's knee, the referee continues to check for a tap. Again, Mysterio kicks Edge to the face. Mysterio continues to limp around as Edge is shaken up as well. The referee checks on Rey as Edge kicks him in the face. Rey tells the referee he can't believe how much that it hurts. Edge pumps the crowd with Rey down. Edge tries to expose the injured knee of Mysterio but he battles back with kicks. Mysterio nails a face first bulldog on Edge. Edge is down but Mysterio tends to his knee. Both men are down, double count out starts.
Both men get back to their feet, chops by Rey onto Edge. Rey kicks Edge's knee and again in the head. He gets a two count. Vickie cheers Edge on as he goes to work with right hands on Mysterio. Edge whips Rey into the turnbuckles, he gets a boot to the face. Mysterio nails a high flying maneuver and gets another cover for two. With Edge down Rey goes to the top rope. Edge gets up but Mysterio fends him off and gets the maneuver exceuted off of the top rope. Mysterio gets another two count on The Champion. Another hurricanrana on Edge. Mysterio connects a belly baseball slid on Edge on the outside. Rey gets him back in the ring and gets a two count. Just as Mysterio was building momentum, Edge lands a monster boot to Rey's face. Edge goes for Rey who is distracted but he misses. Rey gives 619 to both Edge and Vickie who is guarding him. Edge counters and nails a Spear. He gets the pinfall for the victory.
Winner & still WWE World Heavyweight Champion, Edge
Without celebrating Edge checks on Vickie Guerrero as Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins rush to his aide. We go to replays.
Very solid match as the crowd was tremendously into it. As expected Rey didn't win it, but WWE made him look strong by letting him hit 619 twice. It's obvious he'll remain as a main event caliber talent on SmackDown. We're backstage with Ric Flair and Ken Kennedy. Kennedy is clapping as he tells Flair "awesome." He gives Flair a WOOOO and Flair thanks him. Kennedy tells Flair that after he wins the Royal Rumble tonight that before WrestleMania he would love nothing more than to...

Michaels interrupts and says that the very best man will win. HBK says that the winner will be wearing the new Shawn Michaels t-shirt as he pulls out the new HBK shirt. He hands it to Flair as all three walk out of the segment.
Maria's music hits as she comes out with a mic. She says that it is time for the first ever Royal Rumble Kiss Cam. They do the Kiss Cam, embarrassing as many people as possible. Maria thanks the crowd as the last couple is booed for not even kissing. Ashley's music hits and she makes her way out.
Ashley gets in the ring and kisses Maria. Ashley tells Maria that she got a call last week from Hugh Hefner and he wanted to know if she was interested in posing for Playboy. Maria starts to answer as Santino Marella's music hits. Marella says "stop it, just stop it." He gets in the ring and tells Maria that since she obviously didn't get it earlier the answer is no. He says that no one wants to see Maria without her clothes on. The crowd boos as Marella goes on to insult New York sports franchises. The crowd starts a loud let's go Giants chant. Ashley tells Santino to "wait a minute." Santino says that nobody cares about the Giants. Ashley tells Santino that this is Maria's decision. Maria says she doesn't know and asks the crowd if they want to see her pose for Playboy. Obviously the crowd cheers as Marella interrupts by insulting the crowd. Marella says he has a Special Friend here at ringside. Someone in a black sheet is out. It's Big Dick Johnson in a thong. We cut to a new WrestleMania XXIV commercial.
We're back live with Mike Adamle. He miss-pronounces Jeff Hardy's name and makes the mistake of trying to correct it. He says that Hardy will do anything to make history. He cut to another video package hyping tonight's WWE Championship match.

Winner & still WWE Champion, Randy Orton
Randy Orton makes his way to the back with the WWE Championship as we go to replays.
An outstanding match just as I expected. There were a lot of near falls and it was a perfect lead up to the upcoming Rumble match. No matter how much you think that Hardy deserves the strap, WWE played it safe, as I thought that they would. Hardy appears disheartened in the ring as he gets up and raises his hand to show his fans that he is OK. We go to Joey Styles and Tazz where Styles says that Orton will leave New York City barely still the WWE Champion. They hype the Rumble match as Tazz says that 7 of the winners have went on to WrestleMania to win the title.
