WWE RAW Results - 08/04/2008

- WWE RAW kicks off tonight with Mike Adamle, sporting a new haircut and some glasses, standing on the entrance way. The crowd is booing him hard and telling him he sucks. Adamle welcomes everyone to RAW and says he is the new General Manager. Adamle talks about how President Ronald Reagan went from a b-movie actor to a great President. He says first impressions can be deceiving.
Adamle talks about his mistakes he has made so far and says the important thing is that you grow from your mistakes. Adamle also talks about his NFL career as the crowd still boo’s him hard. Adamle asks the fans if they would like to see two Championship matches tonight and says we will have three. Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes vs. John Cena and Batista for the Tag Team Titles but before he can announce the rest of the matches out comes JBL.
JBL congratulates Adamle on being RAW’s new GM. JBL has the new Fortune Magazine with his wife on the cover of it. He tells Adamle they’re from the same cloth, being former football players. JBL continues to kiss Mike Adamle’s ass and gives him props on the Cena-Batista match. JBL asks Adamle to announce another SummerSlam blockbuster, CM Punk vs. JBL for the World Title. Adamle goes to speak as Chris Jericho comes out.
Jericho stops Adamle and JBL interrupts and says this doesn’t have anything to do with him. Jericho says like he said last week, he deserves the shot against CM Punk. JBL argues his point and mentions beating Cena at Great American Bash. Jericho and JBL argue who is the better contender. JBL says Jericho isn’t in his league and Jericho reminds everyone he beat JBL badly last time they faced. Adamle tells them both to knock it off. Adamle announces a 2 on 1 Handicap match with Chris Jericho and JBL teaming up to face CM Punk. If Jericho or JBL pins Punk in the match, the one who gets the pin gets the World Title shot at SummerSlam. Adamle says if Punk wins the match, neither of them get a World Title shot. Adamle makes his exit as Jericho and JBL argue on the ramp.
- Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler go over what’s confirmed for tonight’s show including HBK’s return and the World Tag Team Title match as we go to commercial break.
WWE Intercontinental Title Match: Kofi Kingston vs. Paul Burchill
Back from commercial and Lilian Garcia introduces the next match in the ring as the WWE Intercontinental Champion Kofi Kingston makes his way out to the ring. Out next is Paul Burchill with his sister Katie Lea.
Burchill looks to be sporting a thicker beard this week. He and Kofi lock it up to start the match with Paul overpowering Kofi. Kofi breaks out of the hold and pins Paul for a 2 count. Paul slams Kofi by his hair. They play leap frog a few times and Kofi nails an elbow. He backs Paul into the corner and unloads with an uppercut and gets a 2 count.
Katie Lea distracts Kofi as Paul nails him with a big clothesline. Burchill starts stomping on Kofi and hits a neckbreaker for a 2 count. Kofi rolls out of a hold and gets another 2 count on Burchill. Burchill takes Kofi back down to the mat and holds him with a chinlock. Kofi fights to his feet and takes Paul down with an arm drag. Kofi starts hitting his series of kicks and hits a big dropkick and cross body from the top for a 2 count.
Kofi hits Burchill with a drop toe hold, a big leg drop followed by the Trouble in Paradise to get the pinfall and the win.
Winner: Kofi Kingston
After the match, Katie Lea gets in Kofi’s face and talks trash to him. Paul Burchill tries to attack from the side but Kofi throws him to the outside. Kofi and Paul make their way to the back as Katie Lea is left in the ring. This brings out Mickie James….
WWE Women’s Title Match: Mickie James vs. Katie Lea
The WWE Women’s Champion Mickie James makes her way to the ring as Katie Lea scatters and we go to commercial break.
Back from commercial and Mickie and Katie are going at it in the ring with Mickie in control. Mickie hits a nasty dropkick to the face on Katie which sends her outside to the floor. Mickie dives off the apron and tackles Katie on the outside. Katie manages to drop Mickie by her hair on the ropes and take control of the match. Katie rolls up Mickie but only gets a 2 count.
Katie kicks Mickie in the back of the head and applies a bow-and-arrow submission move as the ref checks Mickie. Mickie rolls out of it and pins Katie for a 2 count. Mickie catches Katie in the head scissors take down followed by a big elbow. Mickie with another neckbreaker and another close 2 count.
Katie counters and hits a nice bridge suplex for another close 2 count. Katie goes for some kind of finisher but Mickie counters it with her signature DDT and gets the pinfall and the win on Katie Lea.
Winner: Mickie James
After the match, Mickie is celebrating in the ring when Beth Phoenix comes in and lays her out. Beth takes her to the floor and works her over. They go back in the ring and Mickie starts to fight back but Phoenix catches her and slams her face first on the mat. The Glamazon’s music hits and she poses in the ring as Santino Marella comes to the entrance ramp. Beth walks up the ramp, smiling at Santino. She grabs his ass and turns around to pose again. Santino barely touches her ass and turns back around to face the crowd. They keep their little flirting game going on as we go back to Cole.
- Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler lead us back to a commercial break as we see John Cena and Cryme Tyme backstage talking things over.
- Back from commercial and Mike Adamle is backstage on the phone with Stephanie McMahon. He thanks her and Shane for making him General Manager. Adamle congratulates Stephanie on the baby as Beth Phoenix and Santino Marella walk up. Santino tells Adamle that both of them should have Title matches at SummerSlam. He says there’s only room for one more Title match at SummerSlam and they need to decide on it. They argue over it with Santino cracking jokes. Adamle announces Kofi Kingston and Mickie James vs. Santino Marella and Beth Phoenix for SummerSlam with both the Women’s Title and Intercontinental Title on the line.
- We see a promo video on John Cena. Batista is shown backstage watching the video as Todd Grisham walks up and asks for his thoughts on wrestling Cena. Batista says the same thing really, that he’s looking forward to it and says as far as tonight, Cena better stay out of his way.
- Back from commercial and Layla is in the ring dancing, kind of like she used to on ECW with Extreme Expose. We cut to a clip from earlier of Jamie Noble trying to run game on Layla again. She says this is enough and tells him she doesn’t associate herself with losers and walks off. We go back to the ring where Layla is finishing her dance. William Regal’s music suddenly plays as he makes his way to the ring with microphone in hand.
Regal asks Layla to pardon the interruption but he needs to come out here and remind everyone who he is. He tells everyone he is their King of the Ring, William Regal. Layla watches on. Jamie Noble’s music hits and he comes out to the ring with a serious look on his face. Noble attacks Regal and the two start brawling. WWE officials enter the ring and try to break them apart as Layla looks puzzled at ringside.
- We see World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk backstage, making his way to the ring for the 2 on 1 Handicap match with Chris Jericho and JBL as we go back to commercial.
2 on 1 Handicap Match: Chris Jericho and JBL vs. CM Punk
JBL makes his way to the ring first followed by Chris Jericho, who is now wearing briefs rather than his usual pants tights. Lance Cade also isn’t with him as Lawler says he has a broken nose. If JBL or Jericho get the pin on Punk in this match, they get a World Title shot at SummerSlam. If Punk wins the match, neither man gets a shot. Jericho’s entrance wraps up and the World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk makes his way to the ring.
Before the match begins, Mike Adamle comes on the big screen. He says this match has a 10 minute time limit and if nobody wins in those 10 minutes, then there will be a Triple Threat match at SummerSlam between the three. The clock appears on the screen and the bell rings as we’re ready to go. Jericho and JBL argue about who is going to start as Punk attacks them both.
JBL and Jericho start double teaming Punk and that’s about it. They kick and stomp on the Champion and attempt another big double team move. Punk dumps Y2J to the floor and leaps at JBL for a cross body. JBL catches him, hits a fall-away slam for a 2 count. JBL continues working over Punk, hitting him with big right hands and stomps. JBL hits a neckbreaker and a 2 count as Jericho tries getting back in the ring.
As Jericho gets up, JBL knocks him back to the floor. They go at it and Jericho throws him into the steps. Jericho comes back in the ring, works over Punk and gets a 2 count for himself. Punk tries to fight back but Jericho drops him with a high knee. Jericho with an elbow from the second rope and another 2 count. Jericho goes to the top rope but Punk meets him. Punk tries to suplex Jericho from the top but Jericho pushes him to the mat. Jericho hits a flying elbow from the top on Punk for another 2 count.
Jericho locks on another submission hold as JBL is still on the outside of the ring. Punk fights out of it with a big hip toss. JBL finally enters the ring, hits Punk from the back and nails a big clothesline. JBL pins Punk for a 2 count as JBL breaks it up. JBL and Jericho get into it again and start brawling in the ring. JBL hits Jericho with a big boot and lays him out. JBL takes Punk to the floor and throws him into the announcers table, then back in the ring. Jericho hits a Lionsault on Punk for a 2 count.
Jericho and JBL fight on the floor then back in the ring. Punk takes JBL out from the top rope and throws Jericho crotch first into the second turnbuckle. Punk hits Jericho with forearms and a nice kick then the running high knee on JBL followed by a bulldog. Another running knee on Jericho. JBL knocks Jericho to the floor as Punk hits the GTS on JBL. Punk covers JBL but gets a 2 count as Jericho breaks the pin.
Punk powerslams Jericho for another 2 count. He catapults Jericho into JBL and rolls Jericho up for a very close 2 count. Punk goes for the GTS on Y2J but he slips out of it. Jericho locks on the Walls of Jericho on Punk in the middle of the ring and tries to make him submit as the clock is at 50 seconds.
JBL comes back in the ring at 30 seconds and kicks Jericho in the back of the head, breaking the Walls of Jericho. Jericho ends up on the floor as JBL is staggering around the ring. Jericho gets back on the apron and knocks JBL onto Punk who is on the mat, pinning him for the win and the shot at SummerSlam.
Winner: JBL
- We see Shawn Michaels being hooked up with a microphone, live at his home in San Antonio, Texas. Looks like he won’t be in the arena tonight after all. We go back to commercial.
- Back from commercial and we see a video of what happened to Shawn Michaels at the Great American Bash. Michaels is on the big screen and Michael Cole welcomes HBK to RAW and asks him how he is doing. HBK says there is severe damage done to his eye and his doctors are monitoring things. He says before Jericho goes getting props for ending his career, he says what he is going through now is the result of many injuries over his career. He talks about his ribs, his knees, back injury and other stuff he’s went through over the years.
HBK says he has another evaluation with doctors the Friday before SummerSlam. He says he plans on coming to SummerSlam to tell everyone what his plans are. He says this time, he will listen to what the doctors say. If they tell him to wrestle on a limited schedule, then he will and if he has to hang it up, he will. That’s about it as Lawler wishes him the best and we go back to commercial.
Matt Striker vs. Kane
Matt Striker is in the ring with his chalkboard. He thanks Mike Adamle for finally allowing him to compete as a member of the RAW roster. The arena explodes and Kane makes his way to the ring with his bag. Kane makes the ring explode as we get ready for the match.
Striker starts copping pleas to Kane but tries to attack him. Kane levels Striker and mounts an early offense. Kane hits a big running clothesline in the corner followed by a big sidewalk slam. Kane climbs to the top rope and comes flying down on Striker.
Striker staggers to his feet as Kane awaits him. Kane hits the big chokeslam and pins Striker for the 1-2-3.
Winner: Kane
After the match, Kane goes to ringside and sends crew members to the crowd in fear of him. Kane grabs a microphone and heads back to the ring. He says lately he has been in a bad place but he’s better now. He holds up the bag and says it’s OK because “he’s dead.” Kane’s music hits as we go back to commercial.
- Backstage we see John Cena with Todd Grisham. He talks about Adamle being GM but says Cena vs. Batista is the big thing going now. Cena doesn’t say much else other than he is ready for whatever happens out there tonight iun their match against DiBiase and Rhodes. We go to commercial.
- Back from commercial and we see Kelly Kelly walking up to Mike Adamle. She talks about what he’s done tonight and mentions Kane. He says he has another Adamle Original and if Kane doesn’t reveal what’s in the bag next week on RAW, then he’s going to take it from him. Adamle invites Kelly to sit down and watch the main event and she does.
WWE Tag Team Title Match: Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase vs. John Cena and Batista
The Champions make their way to the ring first for tonight’s main event. DiBiase and Rhodes pose with their belts and await the arrivals of Cena and Batista. Out next is John Cena to a pretty huge pop tonight. The Animal is out next.
The referee holds the Tag Titles in the air as the bell rings and we get ready for the match. It’s going to be John Cena starting the match with Ted DiBiase here. The two lock up with DiBiase applying a side headlock. Cena with a big hip toss and a bulldog. Cena drags DiBiase in the middle of the ring for a 2 count. Cena tags in Batista.
Cody Rhodes also comes in but Batista overpowers him down to the mat. Cody gets up and tries to fight back but can’t get over on Batista. Cody gets thrown in the corner and hit with shoulder thrusts followed by a big knee to the spine and a 2 count. Cody kicks Batista in the face but gets knocked down with a big elbow to the face. Batista looks to go for a Batista Bomb but DiBiase comes in. Cody throws Batista shoulder first into the ringpost. Cena tries to come in the ring as we go to commercial.
Back from commercial and Cody Rhodes has Batista in control. Cody comes off the ropes and gets hit by a big boot from Batista. John Cena gets tagged in and comes in to clean house on Cody, hitting all his usual moves. Cena goes for the FU but DiBiase, who got taged in, dropkicks him from behind. Cody rolls to the floor as DiBiase kicks Cena to the outside where Rhodes kicks him.
DiBiase throws Cena into the steel steps, brings him back in the ring for a 2 count. A big suplex by DiBiase for another 2 count. They hit a double team move as DiBiase puts Cena on his back again and mocks Batista. DiBiase runs over Cena with a big clothesline and another 2 count. Rhodes gets tagged back in and dropkicks Cena coming off the ropes for another 2 count. Cena and Cody trade right hands until Cody drops him with a leg sweep and a knee to the face. DiBiase comes back in for some more double teaming and pins Cena for another 2 count. Rhodes gets tagged in again and they hit Cena with a double elbow and yet another 2 count by Rhodes.
Rhodes hits Cena with right hands but Cena fights back with his own. Rhodes hooks a sleeper hold on Cena, hops on his back and tries to make him submit. Cena drops to one knee, still with Rhodes on his back. Cena reaches for Batista’s hand to tag but Rhodes tries to prevent it. Batista looks to step down and avoid the tag while DiBiase comes in from behind on Cena. DiBiase is tagged back in and applies a sleeper type move of his own.
Cena overpowers DiBiase, fights out of the hold and applies a sleeper of his own. Rhodes comes in off the top rope and breaks the hold. Cena slams DiBiase and goes to tag in Batista. Cena hits Batista’s face to tag him and the two come face to face in the ring, exchanging words. Batista levels DiBiase with a huge clothesline then a big back body drop. Batista nails a hue spinebuster on DiBiase and eyes Cena. Batista drops DiBiase’s face on the turnbuckle and lays him out with a big spear.
Batista positions DiBiase for the Batista Bomb as Cena knocks Cody Rhodes out of the ring. The Animal nails the Batista Bomb on DiBiase and pins him for the win!
Winners and new World Tag Team Champions: John Cena and Batista
After the match, the SummerSlam opponents come face to face in the ring. Each man holds up his Tag Title belt to make the crowd pop. They do this a few times and really get the crowd popping. Batista climbs the ropes with his belt. They come face to face in the ring again and have a few words as Cena’s music hits and we go to a replay of how the match ended. We cut back into the ring where the two continue to make the crowd pop with their new belts as RAW goes off the air.
