WWE Raw Results - 4/21/2008
Greenville, South Carolina
Report by: Richard Gray of WrestlingNewsWorld.com
Raw Opener:
The Raw opener airs to start things off. We go live to crowd shots of the Bi-LO Center in Greenville, South Carolina. The pyros explode as Jim Ross gives us the formal welcome to the show.
Jerry Lawler comes on and plugs tonight's eight man tag match as well as the three Presidential candidates addressing the WWE audience. It is also promoted that we will WWE's own version of Hillary Clinton vs. Barack Obama in the ring.
Richard Reacts: It looks like we will get the parody match between Obama and Clinton after all.
Pre-Match:
Jim Ross says that the brackets have been kept secret to the superstars competing as well as a secret to him and Lawler.
King Of The Ring: First Round Match
- Intercontinental Champion Chris Jericho vs. United States Champion MVP
The Start:
They lockup and MVP comes out aggressive with a suplex. Not to be out done, Jericho counters with offense of his own. MVP fights back with stiff right hands. MVP gets Jericho in the ropes and is pulled off by the referee. They lockup and Jericho throws MVP down on the ropes, he goes to the outside. Jericho hits a baseball slide on MVP. He goes to the outside.
Mid-Match Notes:
The referee begins the double count out as MVP gets in the ring first. MVP kicks Jericho, gets another shot on him in the ring and gets the first cover. MVP gets a couple of one counts. MVP locks in an abdominal stretch on Jericho on the mat. The referee checks for submission as the crowd chants "Y2J". Jericho is finally able to get to his feet. He uses right elbows to back MVP off. Jericho gets up and goes off the ropes, MVP kicks him in the face. MVP gets a two count. Jericho goes to the top, MVP picks him above his head and slams him down.
The Finish:
Jericho gets up, MVP goes off the ropes right into a Jericho clothesline. Two count for Jericho. With both participants on their feet, MVP builds more offense. MVP has a "goose egg" above his eye from a stiff shot from Jericho. Jericho sends MVP to the canvas and misses a Lion Sault. MVP looks to end it but Jericho counters with Walls of Jericho. MVP taps out.
Winner by submission - Chris Jericho
The Aftermath:
After the match Chris Jericho goes down the ramp and sits on the King of the Ring thrown.
Backstage:
We are shown a backstage camera shot of CM Punk warming up. His MITB briefcase is with him.
Richard Reacts: Fine match but I don't like the finish at all. How does this make MVP look going into his match with Matt Hardy at Backlash? Not very good, they should have had Jericho steal the victory with a pin for him to advance.
[Commercial Break]
King Of The Ring: First Round Match
- CM Punk vs. Matt Hardy
The Start:
The bell rings as Punk and Hardy circle on another. They finally tie up and battle for position. The crowd chants loudly for Matt Hardy. Hardy strikes first with an arm bar takeover. Punk counters with a hard forearm, Hardy counters with his own forearm. The action goes back and forth until Punk is able to slam Hardy down on the mat for the first cover.
Mid-Match Notes:
Punk builds more offense and covers Hardy again. Punk locks a sleeper hold on Hardy on the mat. The crowd chants loudly to bring Hardy to life. Hardy is able to get to his feet, he starts to back down Punk but he counters with a side headlock takeover back to the mat. Hardy counters and gets to his feet but Punk battles him back into the turnbuckles.
Punk sets Hardy up on the top turnbuckle. He connects some shots but Hardy counters with two headbutts. Punk goes to the mat as Hardy goes off the ropes onto Punk. Clothesline from Hardy to Punk. Eventually Punk hits a bulldog on Hardy for another two count.
The Finish:
Punk goes off the ropes but Hardy nails the Side Effect followed by a two count. Hardy goes for Twist of Fate, Punk counters by trying to hit Go to Sleep, Hardy dodges it. Out of nowhere Punk counters again to lock in a bridge roll up for the three count.
Winner by pinfall - CM Punk
The Aftermath:
After the match Punk does exactly what Jericho did by sitting on the King of the Ring thrown.
Richard Reacts: Another quick match but it still had some decent spots. What do you expect when time is limited? That finish should have been used for the opening match as well as Hardy was not booked to look weak. Punk advances.
[Commercial Break]
Back on Raw:
It it is revealed that Chris Jericho will face CM Punk in the second round of the King of the Ring tournament. WWE roles an animtaed video of Obama vs. Clinton on SmackDown vs. Raw 2008. There is no decision but it was a funny video.
Jim Ross/Jerry Lawler:
We go to video footage of last Monday with Triple H and Randy Orton brawling in the ring until JBL came in the ring and took them both out. JR says that they have some big news regarding the Fatal Four Way main event match at Backlash. JR says that it will now be an Elimination Match meaning that three men will be eliminated and the one remaining will be the WWE Champion.
Backstage:
We go what appears to be a taped segment of John "Bradshaw" Layfield talking himself up for Sunday's Backlash pay-per-view. JBL puts himself over and shows today's New York Times which features an article on him on the front page of the Business section. JBL says Sunday the Championship comes home.
Pre-Match:
The Great Khali's music plays as he comes out and sits on the King of the Ring thrown.
Richard Reacts: Ugh, I hate The Great Khali...
[Commercial Break]
King Of The Ring: Round One Match
- The Great Khali vs. Finlay w/Hornswoggle
The Start:
Finlay comes out aggressive but he doesn't have any effect on The Great Khali. Khali pushes Finlay down and slams him to the mat. Finlay builds some offense and was supposed to land a drop kick on Khali who was sitting on the mat, but Khali is unable to sell it.
Mid-Match Notes:
Finlay, overly aggressive, goes off the top only to get taken down by Khali. Hornswoggle gets in the ring with the Shillelagh, Finlay makes Hornswoggle get out the ring. Khali gets out of the ring as he puts Finlay's legs around the ring post, who is still in the ring. Khali gets himself counted out.
Winner by count out - Finlay
The Aftermath:
Big Show's music starts and he comes to ringside. They stare each other down as Show makes his way over to the announce table where Khali is standing. Khali walks away from Big Show as Show ends up in the ring as Khali goes to the back.
Richard Reacts: Is anyone looking forward to Big Show vs. Khali at Backlash? That was pretty lame buildup as Khali backed off like he was scared of Big Show. I'm glad there was no actual match because I can't stand watching Khali try to wrestle. He had to sell one spot in Finlay's dropkick and couldn't even do that. It looked like Finlay missed badly when it was meant to connect.
[Commercial Break]
Back On Raw:
Kennedy is helped to the back by referees and Hornswoggle.
Pre-Match:
Regal gets out of the ring and brings Hornswoggle down. He throws him in the ring for the final first round match.
King Of The Ring: Round One Match
- William Regal vs. Hornswoggle
The bell rings and Hornswoggle looks terrified. Regals immediately takes Hornswoggle to the ground and locks the Regal Stretch. Hornswoggle taps out.
Winner by submission - William Regal
The Aftermath:
Finlay gets in the ring to attend to Hornswoggle. Finlay is walking very gingerly as he is greeted by a big boot from Raw General Manager William Regal. Regal goes to the back.
King Of The Ring:
Semi-finals are Jericho vs. CM Punk and William Regal vs. Finlay.
Backstage:
Shawn Michaels is walking to ringside wearing his cowboy hat and street clothes.
Richard Reacts: That...um... well that sucked folks. Two solid TV matches followed by two - um - segments? It looks like they might do a Finlay injury angle with him being unable to compete. Before they cut to the bracket they showed referees attending to Finlay and Hornswoggle in the ring.
[Commercial Break]
During The Break:
We are shown footage from WWE's most recent extended tour overseas with comments from Santino Marella, Cody Rhodes, Maria and Triple H.
Back On Raw:
Shawn Michaels' music hits as he poses on the ramp as the pyros explode. Lilian Garcia formally introduces him. Shawn gets in the ring, removes his cowboy hat, and gets on the mic. He says the last thing that he would have to do when he faced Ric Flair in his final match at WrestleMania was face one of Flair's good friends in the ring at Backlash - Batista. He says he knows Batista is here tonight and he has a question for him. Michaels invites Batista to ringside.
Batista's music plays as he comes out wearing jeans and a white tank top. Batista poses at the top of the ramp, the pyros explode. Batista gets in the ring and poses for the fans. Michaels tells Batista he appreciates him coming out. He talks about Chris Jericho's question to Batista on SmackDown. He asks Batista if Jericho is right and if he wanted to be the man to face Ric Flair at WrestleMania.
Batista asks him if it would make him feel better if he said yet - relieve him of any blame. Batista says sorry man this isn't about Ric Flair anymore but about him and Michaels. Batista says that he respects where Michaels is in his career but he doesn't like how he got here. Batista says this is the last thing that he is going to say to Michaels. He says at Backlash he is going to finish this.
Michaels tells Batista that he appreciates his honesty. He says he has a confession of his own to his make - he is everything that Batista says that he is. Michaels puts him over as the Heartbreak Kid, The Show Stopper, and whether or not anyone likes it he is the man. HBK says that he knows that Batista is probably preoccupied with his title match this week against The Undertaker but he needs to understand that he is going to need good luck on Sunday. Michaels extends his hand, Batista shakes it then turns him around. They stare off as Batista laughs at Michaels who looks serious.
Batista drops his mic and approaches Michaels. Batista gets on the apron and points at Michaels. Michaels looks on from inside the ring as Batista goes to the back to his music. Batista stops at the apron and points again at Michaels.
Richard Reacts: That was a corny segment. I'm not sure if it is too soon for this angle or if it just isn't clicking with me. The crowd seemed more split this week which makes this even harder to get into. There needs to be a distinctive heel and face and I just don't think that one has been established in this program. Lawler plugged that we would hear from Senator Hillary Clinton when we return from break.
[Commercial Break]
Back On Raw:
We are with Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler thanking us for joining them.
Hillary Clinton Video Segment:
Hillary says that tonight you can call her "Hill Rod". She plugs King of the Ring and says that the last man standing might just be a woman. She says that you need a president to go to the mat for you. She says if things get a little tough she might even have to deliver the People's Elbow. Clinton says that Randy Orton is safe for now but she is ready to rumble for the American people.
Non-King Of The Ring Singles Match
- Hardcore Holly (w/ Cody Rhodes) vs. Carlito (w/Santino Marella)
The Start:
We begin with Hardcore Holly putting a headlock on Carlito. Holly goes off the ropes and Carlito hits a hiptoss. Holly counters by getting to his feet and hitting a scoop slam. Holly gets the opening cover and goes on the offensive.
Mid-Match Notes:
Hardcore Holly dominates Carlito in the middle of the match with a huge clothesline and a cover for a two count. Finally Carlito is able to counter with Holly off the ropes. Carlito gets Holly on the mat and connects some left hand shots. Carlito picks Holly up and slams him down to the mat. Carlito gets a cover for a quick count.
Carlito locks in a submission hold on the mat, the crowd cheers Holly to his feet. Holly backs Carlito away with right hands. Carlito whips Holly off the ropes and nails a dropkick. Carlito gets a cover for a two count. He follows with some double axe handle blows to Carlito. Carlito drives his knee in Hardcore Holly's back near the kidneys. Body slam from Carlito onto Holly for a two count. Carlito locks a submission hold back on Holly.
Holly is able to get to his feet once again but he is greeted by another offensive attack by Carlito. Carlito works on the lower back of Holly. Holly is able to counter a shot from Carlito and is able to build some offense with some right hands. Holly whips Carlito off the ropes and nails a double sledge take down. Holly hits a dropkick.
The Finish:
Holly sets Carlito up on the ropes, Holly barely misses a low blow with a kick. Holly goes for the Alabama Slam but Carlito counters with the Back Stabber.
Winner by pinfall - Carlito
The Aftermath:
Santino gets on the mic and says that Holly and his friend and is a boy which makes him a boyfriend better watch out. Now in the ring, Rhodes interrupts and asks Marella if he ever shuts up. Rhodes delivers a blow with the mic on Marella and the WWE World Tag Team Champions clean house.
Richard Reacts: Nothing noteworthy and basic storyline development. Santino Marella is still the man and the best talker in the business right now.
Backstage:
We're split screen with Chris Jericho and CM Punk making their way to ringside. That match is up next.
[Commercial Break]
Kid Rock Plug:
Lawler and JR plug Kid Rock's "All Summer Long" which is the official theme song of Backlash.
Backstage:
What appears to be a taped segment of Triple H airs. He pumps up his match this Sunday against John Cena, JBL, and Randy Orton for the WWE Championship.

The bell rings and the fans chant "Y2J". The two lockup and Jericho hits a side headlock takeover, putting Punk's shoulder on the mat for a one count. Punk uses his speed to counter and we're back to where we started with the two going for a lockup. Punk delivers several leg shots on Jericho, then buries his head into the midsection of Jericho. Punk gets a quick cover.
Mid-Match Notes:
Jericho immediately counters and picks Punk up and hangs him out to dry on the ropes. Punk goes over the top rope into some sort of springboard off the apron, Jericho counters by kicking the ropes. Jericho goes back on the offensive and locks in a submission hold on Punk. Jericho breaks the hold and kicks Punk in the head.
Punk gets back to his feet but is greeted with right hands form Jericho. Punk counters with some rights of his own as well as a counter into a hammerlock. Punk gets a counter. Jericho counters with a hurricanrana for a a two count. They trade roll ups for two counts.
Out of nowhere Jericho goes for Walls of Jericho, Punk rolls him up with a counter. Back to their feet, Punk nails a tremendous powerslam for another near fall. Punk pulls Jericho up and uses his legs for offense. He whips Jericho into the turnbuckles, Jericho countered with an elbow. Punk tries GTS with another counter but Jericho hit an elbow.
Eventually Jericho is able to lock the Walls of Jericho on Punk, he refuses to submit. Jericho wrenches back as Punk finally makes it to the ropes. The crowd boos as the referee forces him to break the hold. Jericho kicks Punk who sells his "injuries". Punk throws Jericho over his back but Jericho lands on his feet on the apron.
The Finish:
Jericho makes his way to the top, but he gets a boot to the temple from Punk. Punk gets Jericho off the top rope and hits Go To Sleep on the Intercontinental Champion. Punk is able to get the cover for the pinfall.
Winner by pinfall - CM Punk
The Aftermath:
After the match Punk sells as he has his MITB briefcase with him. We go to several replays of the spectacular finish.
Richard Reacts: That was definitely the match of the night so far. I really want to see more out of Punk vs. Jericho. Jericho was definitely the face and Punk was the heel. They didn't get as crazy as they could have, however, it was perfect for television. Barack Obama's campaign video is up next.
[Commercial Break]
During The Break:
They tease an Edge/Kane confrontation for ECW on Sci-Fi tomorrow night.
Barack Obama Video:
Barack says that it is a historic time for America. He says that not only may this be the end of the era of Randy Orton but it is the end of big business is Washington. He launches into his speech and asks if you smell what Barack is cookin?

The Start:
The bell rings and Finlay's knee is heavily taped. They go for a lockup but Regal goes immediately to the "injured" knee of Finlay.
Mid-Match Notes:
The fight ends up outside where Regal throws Finlay into the steel ring steps. Regal gets back in, Finlay is slow to follow. Regal beats on Finlay inside of the ring, punishing his "injured' left leg. Finlay is dominated by Regal who is jeered with "Regal sucks" chants by the live crowd.
Finlay starts to mount some offense with some big right hands. He ends up getting a roll up on Regal for a quick two count. Leg drop by Finlay onto Regal. Another cover for a one count. Finlay picks Regal up but Regal is able to get down. The action goes back and forth.

Winner by submission - William Regal
King Of The Ring:
The finals will be William Regal vs. CM Punk.
Richard Reacts: That match was extremely basic, they couldn't do much with Finlay selling his "injuries".
[Commercial Break]
John McCain Video:
McCain says that finally the Mac has come back to Greenville. He says if you want to be the man you have to beat the man. He says come November, whatcha gonna do when the McCainiacs come for you? He says he is going to introduce Bin Laden to the Undertaker. He asks if you smell what Mac is cookin'? He launches into his speech and says that's the bottom line because John McCain said so.
Backlash:
Ross and Lawler run down the Backlash card.
Backstage:
What appears to be a taped video airs with John Cena talking up Sunday's Fatal Four Way match.
[Commercial Break]
Pre-Match:
The ring ropes have red, white, and blue streamers in them. A fake Hillary and Bill Clinton come out to Hogan's music (didn't he endorse Obama?). The fake Bill trips getting into the ring. "Hillary" tries to get the crowd going with Hogan type poses. The crowd boos. "Hillary" gets on the mic and says whatcha gonna do when Hillary Clinton and her Super Delegates run wild on you?
"Barack Obama" comes out to The Rock's music (isn't he a republican?). This guy has huge fake ears on and does a complete Rock-like entrance. He gets on the mic and says that finally Barack has come back to South Carolina. The crowd boos just as heavily as they did the fake Hillary and Bill. The fake Bill gets on the mic and starts but "Barack" says it doesn't matter what he thinks. "Barack" says if you smeellll what Barack is cookin'.

"Bill" says he did not have illegal contact with that candidate. Umaga's music plays and here comes the Samoan Bulldozer. The referee calls for the bell.
Winner - No Contest
The Aftermath
Samoan Spike on "Barack", "Bill" tried to get "Hillary" to meet him but Umaga scared him off. Umaga grabs "Hillary" and gives her the Samoan Drop.
Richard Reacts: Well that was just what I thought it would be - an attempt for WWE to get some mainstream publicity with a goofy parody skit. The only positive thing to come out of it is the fact that the fake "Bill Clinton" was great. He looked dead on.
[Commercial Break]
Back On Raw:
We are shown a replay of Umaga's unexplained attack on the "candidates". Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler plug the Pennsylvania primaries which will take place tomorrow. Ross says that they want to make sure that everyone gets out and votes.
Divas Segment:
Michelle McCool, Kelly Kelly, Cherry, Maria, and Ashley all come to the ring to Maria's music. Maria gets on the mic and says that they are all out here because something happened last week that they never thought was possible. Cue footage of Mickie James winning the WWE Women's Championship. Ashley says ding dong the witch is dead. She introduces the new WWE Women's Champion Mickie James. Mickie comes out with the Women's Championship belt.
Maria tells Mickie that she knows that she wasn't expecting a celebration but congratulations. Mickie cuts a cheesy promo about never say never. Beth Phoenix's music interrupts and she comes out with all of the heel divas.
Beth says you know that we are all not best friends but they had to breakup this love fast. She says it's not if she is going to win the Women's Championship back, it is when. Michelle McCool cuts Beth off and goes after her. All the divas brawl with the babyfaces cleaning the ring of heels.
Richard Reacts: Perhaps the start of a Beth Phoenix vs. Michelle McCool program? Aren't you glad that you are a WNW Premium Member? If you aren't, you are missing out! That was a decent segment but Beth was far better on the mic than Mickie.
[Commercial]
During The Break:
A promo video airs promoting the return of Ken Kennedy to Raw next week.
Richard Reacts: I was told that Kennedy would be back this week for KOTR. Apparently WWE did not want to bring him back until after Backlash.
King Of The Ring: Finals Match

The referee checks for submission on Punk but he is able to make it to his feet again. Punk nails some hard kicks to the head of William Regal. Punk hits a back hand on Regal and another kick. Regal hits the canvas and Punk gets a near fall. Punk puts Regal up for GTS but Regal blocks by grabbing the ropes.
The Finish:
Regal gets Punk back to the center of the ring. Regal goes for the Regal Stretch. Punk resists so Regal hits some right hands. Regal locks in the Regal Stretch and Punk taps out.
Winner by submission - William Regal to win the King of the Ring tournament
The Aftermath:
Regal goes to the top of the ramp and sits on the King of the Ring thrown.
Richard Reacts: Apparently Regal is in for a push. I understand why WWE did not put Punk over because some people within the company feel like he needs more momentum before such a push. This is a surprise to me and looks like WWE changed the KOTR plans either sometime over the weekend or earlier in the day. Regal is more reliable than Punk winning but we'll see where this goes before I pass judgment.
[Commercial Break]
During The Break:
A commercial is shown for the new Hardy Boys DVD which hits stores next week.
Back On Raw:
WWE Champion Randy Orton comes out ready to go. Randy Orton gets in the ring and delivers his Backlash promo in person.
Pre-Match:
JBL comes out next followed by Chavo Guerrero and Edge. Triple H is out first for the babyfaces followed by John Cena, Kane, and The Undertaker.
[Commercial Break]
Eight Man Tag Team Match
- WWE Champion Randy Orton, Edge, Chavo Guerrero, & JBL vs. WWE World Heavyweight Champion Undertaker, ECW Champion Kane, John Cena, & Triple H
The Start:
We're in the ring with Orton and Undertaker at first but it ends up being Edge vs. Undertaker. Undertaker hits the ropes and nails a clothesline on Edge. Undertaker "rope walks" with Edge, sending him to the mat. Undertaker causes all of the babyfaces to get off the apron.
[Commercial Break]
Mid-Match Notes:

The Game tags in Cena who goes on the offensive, concluding with a big suplex on Edge. Cena goes for the 5 Knuckle Shuffle but falls to the outside. JBL rolls him back in the ring.

JBL nails a Russian leg sweet on Cena. Hard right hands from JBL onto Cena in the corner. JBL follows with big boots and a lariat for a cover. He gets a two count. JBL tags in Edge. Edge goes to work on Cena as JBL held him back.
Edge is in control with right hands and then the lock of a submission hold. Cena is able to make it to his feet relatively quickly where he goes for the counter. He breaks the hold but goes off the ropes into a huge boot from Edge. Orton is tagged in. Orton with the cover, but he gets two. Orton locks in a sleeper hold on Cena. The referee checks for submission.
The crowd cheers Cena to his feet with Orton on his back. Cena bounces into the turnbuckles with Orton still on his back. Both men go after one another with a lariat, they collide. The referee starts the double count out. JBL urges Randy to tag him in. Chavo is tagged in and so is Kane.
Kane gets a boot on Orton and then sends Chavo air born. Kane clears the heels off the apron and nails a sideslam on Chavo. He goes off the top onto Chavo. Kane gets a cover, JBL and Orton make the save. Undertaker hits the ring and goes to the outside after JBL.
The Finish:
Meanwhile in the ring, Chavo counters Kane and goes to the top. Kane goes for a chokeslam but is poked in the eye. Chavo goes off the top rope but ends up getting caught by a Kane chokeslam. Edge gets in the ring and hits a spear out of nowhere on Kane.
Winners by Edge pinning Kane - WWE Champion Randy Orton, Edge, Chavo Guerrero, & JBL
The Aftermath:
John Cena gets in and nails the F-U on Edge. Triple H gets in and goes for the Pedigree but Orton gets an RKO on him. JBL and Orton are met with a double chokeslam by Undertaker. Undertaker gets on his knees as the lights go out and he strikes his signature pose.
Richard Reacts: That was a good main event. Not a lot of wrestling but it was meant for Backlash buildup and I feel that goal was accomplished. There was as much star power as WWE could offer so hopefully the rating reflects. Be sure and read Luke's Raw Is Blogged for more reaction. Thanks for joining me, goodnight everyone!
