WWE Smackdown! Results - 05/25/07
Des Moines, Iowa
Report By: Richard Trionfo of PWInsider.com
WWE Smackdown! Opener:
Edge is out to brag more about his winnings, and give his side of the story to the people complaining about the opportunity he took to win the title. Teddy Long interrupts to congratulate Edge about his title defense at Judgment Day, but reminds him he’ll face the winner of the Fatal Four-Way match for the title at One Night Stand. In the match, Kane, Finlay, Mark Henry and Batista. Slim pickings. The match at ONS will be in a Steel Cage. Edge looks a bit worried.
Referee: Jim Korderas
Paul London and Brian Kendrick vs. David Taylor and William Regal
Deuce ‘N Domino are out to observe. Regal and London start things off. London gets a headlock on then gets back-body dropped but lands on his feet and hits a monkey flip. Kendrick tags in a sunset flips over for a one count. Regal tags out to Taylor and he and Kendrick lock up mid-ring. Taylor, off the ropes, shoulderblocks Kendrick down. Kendrick gets a monkey flip though and dropkicks Taylor over the top rope. Taylor re-gains control and throws Kendrick over the top. Kendrick sells the left knee on the outside. Taylor works some unique offense, a fall-away slam with Kendrick laying across the turnbuckle. Regal comes in with some forearms and knees. Regal starts working the knee then tags out. European uppercut, definitely appropriate here. Kendrick tries to fight out of the heel corner and gets a back-slide for two. Taylor is in but Kendrick quickly hits his Sliced Bread move and London is in. Spinning heel kick catches Regal, but Taylor distracts on the pin attempt. London to the top, and Domino throws him off for the DQ.
Winners by disqualification, Brian Kendrick and Paul London
The Aftermath:
After the match, an upset Taylor went after Domino, and all three teams are brawling now.
Backstage:
We are back and members of the Backstage, Hornswaggle is running around with the World Championship, followed closely by an angry Edge. After chasing him through the halls, Finlay comes upon the scene. Finlay takes the belt and puts it on Edge’s shoulder, while saying he can keep the belt....for now. are in the front row.
In the arena:
Jillian is on her way to the ring. She’s going to perform a future #1 hit, Jillatonic (I think that’s how you spell it). She doesn’t seem to be much of a dancer either. I never thought I’d type this, but thankfully, the Boogeyman interrupts. Then Cole steals my line. Boogey comes from behind and Jillian is able to make it out, until Michelle McCool takes Jillian and tosses her into the ring. Jillian tries to leave, but Little Boogey blocks her exit. Worms end up in Jillian’s face, straight from Boogeyman’s mouth.
Backstage:
Teddy Long offers the job of assistant to Vickie Guerrero. After Vickie leaves, Kristal comes in and gushes about the time Teddy will have to spend with her now. Uh-oh Teddy, get out while you still can.
Referee: Charles Robinson
Matt Hardy vs. Mike Mizanin
Arm-drag off of a lock-up by Hardy. Hammerlock by Hardy, but Miz elbows out. Miz uses the slingshot to choke Matt on the middle rope. Cover for two. Miz uses some questionable tactics to keep the advantage. Side-Russian leg-sweep for a two-count by Miz. The former reality TV “star” rolls through a slam and keeps the head-lock on Matt. Miz keeps working on the neck, using the ropes to do so once again. Miz boots away, then clubs at Matt with some forearm cross-faces. His offense is still lacking something. Matt gets a second wind, but gets elbowed down by Miz. Mizanin hits the running clothesline in the corner. Cover for two. Hardy fights out of a rest-hold, but instead of being put back down, gets a couple clotheslines and a back body-drop. Clothesline in the corner followed by the bulldog by Matt. He switches things up and gets a second-rope elbow instead of the leg-drop. That garners him a two count. His Twist-of-Fate is reversed into a roll-up for two by Miz, then Matt hits the Side-Effect for two. Miz walks into a straight right hand from Hardy, who gets a neck-breaker (supposed to be a Twist of Fate, and was called so by Cole- did Miz mistakenly turn over?) for the hard-fought win.
Winner - Matt Hardy
Mark Henry:
Mark Henry does a pre-taped promo. What’s the deal with WWE.com calling him “Silverback” throughout the whole front-page article on him? And he calls himself that at the end of the promo. Yeah, that’s the key ingredient he’s missing: A nickname.
In the arena:
M.V.P. is introduced, dressed to the nines. You’d think heels would stop having celebrations in the ring, considering nothing good ever happens in the end for them. He takes this chance to tell everyone, “I told you so.” Porter says the celebration is missing the man who made it all possible, Chris Benoit. Now he’s just asking for it. Benoit does come out and Porter pretty much tells Benoit to shake his hand and congratulate him, masking it in the sincerity of calling him “classy.” Benoit shakes the hand and goes to leave, but M.V.P demands that Benoit raises his hand. He gets in Benoit’s face and Benoit finally takes exception and hits three suplexes on Porter, then starts in on the chops. M.V.P. heads for the hills.
Backstage:
Maryse is backstage, as she introduces the Timbaland music video. Then we see it. Nope, not watching tonight either.
Backstage:
Kane is backstage, with a quick promo about his upcoming match.
Non Title Match
Referee: Mickey Hensen
Jimmy Wang Yang vs. Chavo Guerrero (c)
This is non-title. Arm-drag out of a lock-up (didn’t I type that already?) by Yang to start. Chavo gets a snap-mare after some reversals and Yang turns it into a hammer-lock. Standing side head-lock by Yang, and he shoulders Chavo down for a one-count. “Every been to a Guerrero family reunion? You drink a little bit then fight everybody” says J.B.L. Roll-up by Yang for a near-fall. Chavo dropkicks Yang’s knee, as Yang was on the top rope. Chavo goes to work on the left knee. Surfboard by Chavo, with the knee right in the small of the back of Yang. He gets to his feet and starts hammering away at Chavo, but Chavo re-gains control. Uppercut sends Yang down. More work on the knee, as he’s got a half-Boston Crab on Yang. Bodyslam and Yang rolls through for a two-count. Then he gets a backslide for two. Yang gets a kick to the back of Chavo’s head and clotheslines Chavo. Back-body drop sends him over, but Yang misses a kick. Chavo headbutts Yang into the gut. Yang misses a moonsault but lands on his feet, which blows out his knee. Chavo smells blood and goes for the Three Amigos. Chavo to the outside and to the top. Yang though gets up and crotches Chavo on the top. He goes up but can’t hit the suplex. Chavo flips off and goes for a powerbomb, but Yang turns it into a hurricanrana and holds on for the pin.
Winner - Jimmy Wang Yang
Backstage:
Batista is backstage, pacing, while Kristal tries to interview him. He gives another one of his short, intense promos. Not a great one, but not really because of him.
In the arena:
Edge is out to scout and hopefully, do guest commentary. The match is next!
Number One Contenders Match
Referee: Jim Korderas
Kane vs. Batista vs. Finlay vs. Mark Henry
Henry/Batista, Finlay/Kane are the pair-offs to start. Batista and Henry go right to the outside. Edge taunts Batista at ringside, so Batista grabs him and throws him back. Henry works him over as we head to break. We continue with the four men switching places- Batista/Henry inside and th other two out. Powerslam by Henry for a near-fall, then Finlay jumps on his back. He slings Finlay off then misses an elbowdrop. Kane comes back in to work on Finlay. Then he takes it to Batista, whipping him into the corner and side-slamming him. To the top he goes, clothesline onto Mark Henry. Clothesline in the corner to Finlay. Batista blind-sides Henry by going to the top and hitting a shoulderblock, nearly for three. Batista hits a cradle suplex, bringing Finlay off the second rope, then Henry splashes Batista. Kane and Henry meet in mid-ring and start throwing some right hands. Kane gets the upper-hand, and he and Batista take down Henry. Spinebuster by Batista on Kane. The Big Red Machine rolls to the outside as Henry slams Batista. Finlay’s got the shillaleigh and he hits Henry as ref Charles Robinson checks on Batista. But for some reason, he goes to the outside to work on Kane. Hornswaggle comes from under the ring, but Batista spears Finlay and Hornswaggle goes back under. Spear to Henry by Batista. He goes to powerbomb Finlay, and he hits it. Cover for the three.
Winner - Batista
The Aftermath:
Batista stares down Edge and the Rated R Superstar’s title as the show closes.
