WWE Smackdown! Results - 06/29/07
San Antonio, Texas
Report By: Richard Trionfo of PWInsider.com
WWE Smackdown! Opener:
Michael Cole and John Bradshaw Layfield welcome us to the show as we go straight to the ring for the opening match, which is the first in a series of Interpromotional matches organised by the General Manager for the night, Vickie Guerrero.
Referee: Charles Robinson
Carlito vs. Ric Flair
The start:
The first of several inter-promotional matches, apparently organised by “acting GM” Vickie Guerrero, starts us off after the full intro and pyro. Carlito gets a cheap shot out of the corner but Flair comes back with some chops to start things off. A back body drop, a knee to the face and a clothesline gets Carlito an early one count. Carlito dropkicks Flair and then suplexes him for another one.
Mid-match notes:
Another dropkick gets a one count. Carlito goes to work on Flair’s ribs with forearms, punches and kicks. He holds on a stretch for a while getting a one count. Flair fights back with chops but Carlito gets him up in the corner for mounted punches getting a two count. Carlito scissors his legs around Flair’s ribs. Flair gets out of it with a punch to the face.
The Finish:
Flair hits a back body drop and struts. He blocks a dropkick from Carlito and locks in the Figure Four. Carlito gets very close to the bottom rope so Flair breaks it and locks it in again in the middle of the ring. Carlito taps.
Winner - Ric Flair
Referee: Chris Kay
Lance Cade vs. Matt Hardy
The start:
Lock-up and a clean break from Cade. Cole notes that Cade was trained by HBK, an interesting note that I’m surprised doesn’t get brought up more. Cade dropkicks Hardy, then spends some time figuratively patting himself on the back for it. Cade elbows out of a hammer-lock, then applies his own. Hardy runs him around the ring, then through the ropes.
Mid-match notes:
Matt comes at Cade with a dropkick through the ropes that takes Cade down. Matt’s been switching things up lately and here’s an example, hitting the elbow on the neck of the middle rope instead of the leg-drop. Before the Twist-of-Fate, Cade sneaks out of the ring. Back in, he hits a big spinebuster. Cover by Cade gets two. Hardy fights out of the corner, but gets elbowed down coming off the ropes. Hook of the leg by Cade on the pin, and he gets just two. Abdominal stretch is next. Cade follows with a bodyslam, but misses an elbow. Enziguiri by Matt ends Cade’s run.
The Finish:
Clothesline in the corner followed by a bulldog by Matt for a near-fall. Cade, though, catches Hardy coming off the ropes with a J.B.L-like clothesline. Cade sets Hardy on the top rope and looks for a superplex, and he hits it. Cade tries to set him up on another corner, but Matt fights out and hits the Twist of Fate for the win.
Winner - Matt Hardy
Lovin' Life:
Another Michelle McCool “lovin’ life” video is shown.
Cruiserweight Championship Match
Referee: Jim Korderas
Funaki vs. Jamie Noble vs. Chavo Guerrero (c)
The start:
Noble goes after Funaki until Chavo shoves him off and goes after the former Kaientai member himself. Roll-through by Funaki into a pin until it’s broken up by Noble. He hammers away on Chavo. Noble tries to suplex the champ off the top, but Chavo gets out of it. He goes after Funaki with a hard European uppercut.
Mid-match notes:
Drop-toe hold by Funaki on Chavo. A roll-up of Noble by Chavo, while Noble suplexes Funaki for a nice combo, but it doesn’t get the pin. Noble and Chavo have an ugly meeting in the middle of the ring that apparently, Noble got the best of. He goes after Funaki with the right hands. Funaki gets caught off the ropes and Noble applies a sleeper. Funaki gets out and goes to the top, landing on both Chavo and Noble on the outside.
The Finish:
Back inside, Funaki holds onto the ropes and back-body drops a charging Chavo outside the ring. Funaki is still nicely selling the effects of Mark Henry’s bear-hug from last week. Funaki launches Noble over the top rope, but Chavo comes out of nowhere and hits the Gory Special for the victory.
Winner and still Cruiserweight Champion, Chavo Guerrero
Backstage:
Vickie Guerrero is backstage on the phone, and Edge comes in looking for Teddy. Edge says he refuses to compete. Vickie says the match is still on, but Edge says he’s competing under protest.
Jesse and Festus:
We see a vignette on Jesse and Festus, the new hillbilly tag team on Smackdown. Jesse says they’re happy to be coming to Smackdown, while Festus stares blankly into the camera.
Non Title Match
Referee: John Kone
Cryme Tyme vs. Deuce and Domino (c)
Domino and JTG start things off. JTG trips Domino up and hits a bit of a modified Whoopie Cushion for a near-fall. Blind tag made to Shad, who clotheslines, then bodyslams Domino. Domino’s nose is busted open here. Deuce tags in and almost pins JTG. Cobra Clutch version applied by Domino to JTG. He makes the hot tag (I think) to Shad, who takes out both champs. Shad showing some fire here. Cryme Tyme were set for a double team when Deuce low-bridges JTG over and Domino rolls up Shad for the win.
Winners, the WWE Tag Team Champions, Deuce and Domino
The Aftermath:
The champs are still in the ring celebrating, while Cryme Tyme walks backstage and absconds with their car. They’re looking to find some “big booty girls” with the car, though Shad wants to strip it and sell its parts. The tag champs can’t make it backstage in time to stop the fun-time boys.
Non Title Match
Referee: Chris Kay
Kane vs. Montel Vontavious Porter (c)
M.V.P gets on the mic to claim he’s better than pretty much every San Antonio Spur.
The start:
Side-headlock by M.V.P, and he comes off the ropes and staggers backward after running into Kane. Porter tries to go low on Kane, but Kane picks him up. Porter wiggles out and takes a powder. M.V.P goes after the knee, and then hits his running boot to the head of Kane. Arm-bar is applied by M.V.P.
The Finish:
Kane is caught with an elbow coming into the corner, then Porter hits the running boot in the corner. Kane gets his knee worked over, then hits a big boot on M.V.P as the champ was coming off the ropes. Side slam by Kane gets two. He sets up for the chokeslam but M.V.P elbows out. He manages to drop-toe hold Kane into the corner, but Kane catches his boot and chokeslams him. Game over.
Winner - Kane
Backstage:
Smackdown’s newest announcer interviews Eugene backstage. That doesn’t last long, as Great Khali enters the picture with his interpreter. Khali wants them to have a fun time in the ring tonight.
Backstage:
Mickie and Victoria trade barbs backstage. Victoria, to prove she’s wilder than Mickie, promises to kiss the next person who walks through the door, on the mouth. So Howard Finkel walks through and Victoria passes because she wasn’t warmed up. Jim Duggan is next, and Victoria claims he left too fast. Mickie tells her she’ll do it. The Big Fat Greased Up Guy comes through- actually, stops in the doorway to tie his shoe. Ron Simmons walks up from behind and crosses the threshold first, so Mickie applies the lip-lock on him.
Referee: Chris Kay
Mickie James vs. Victoria
The start:
Headlock take-over by Victoria and she starts jawing with Mickie. Backslide by Mickie gets a near-fall. Mickie tries to roll her up to no avail. She ends up hitting a cross-body instead. Back-kick by Mickie, who goes to the top, but Victoria knocks her off.
Mid-match notes:
Stuck in a tree of woe, Victoria grabs the hair and starts pounding away. She does some damage to Mickie, putting the boots to her, then going for a cover. Only got two though. Victoria slaps Mickie, which seems to anger her, and she hammers away. Victoria comes back and hits her spinning side slam for two. Frustrated, she starts choking Mickie on the ropes.
The Finish:
Mickie gets a back elbow in the corner, then a hurricanrana. Neckbreaker into a pin by Mickie, it only gets two. Victoria counters an expected DDT, but misses a moonsault. Mickie is first to her feet, and slips in a version of the Oklahoma Roll for the pin.
Winner - Mickie James
The Aftermath:
Mickie James celebrates her win as Victoria looks non too pleased that her first match on Smackdown ended in a loss.
Referee: Charles Robinson
Eugene vs. The Great Khali
God, what a ridiculous new outfit Eugene has. Eugene chants “fun time” until Khali wraps his hands around Eugene’s throat and throws him down. Two-handed chokeslam and a foot on Eugene’s chest ends it.
Winner - The Great Khali
Backstage:
The new interviewer tracks down Batista backstage for some pre-match thoughts. He’s got one word for Edge: punishment.
Non Title Match
Referee: Jim Korderas
Batista vs. Edge (c)
The start:
Batista smothers Edge in the corner, until the ref makes him break, and that’s where Edge takes over. Edge wants to work the knee in the corner, but Batista simply powers out. Batista works the leg, Ric Flair style. He chop blocks the knee and puts on the half-crab. Back on their feet, Batista hits a big spinebuster.
Mid-match notes:
Edge goes for a low blow, but its blocked. Instead, he hits a short-arm clothesline. He has the advantage into break. Back from break, Batista continues to dominate, laying his shoulder into Edge in the corner. Edge suckers him in though, and tosses him outside the ring. Coming back in, Batista gets caught with a boot. Edge keeps Batista on the outside, giving himself time to heal up inside the ring. Whip into the buckle by Batista, Edge dodges a charge, but Batista catches Edge coming off the ropes with a spear.
The Finish:
Clothesline in the corner by Batista, followed by another one. Sidewalk slam is next. Edge takes Batista down, but his spear is caught by Batista, who spinebusts him. Edge high-tails it out of the ring. Edge sets up Batista in the ring for a spear again, but Batista turns it into a Batista bomb for the clean win.
Winner - Batista
