WWE Friday Night Smackdown- The Early Report (12/5/08)

First off, an apology for the lack of reports the past few weeks as things have been a little out of whack for me. There still are plans for a streamlined design for carltonprescott.com and hopefully between now and the new year we can finally get that done.

On to the December 5th edition of Smackdown

-We get a recap of last weeks 3 "Beat The Clock" matches that led to Jeff Hardy and Triple H winning their matches in the same time and Vickie Guerrero's decision to make the WWE title match at Armageddon a Triple Threat match featuring Hardy, Triple H and WWE Champion Edge.

-Jim Ross and Tazz welcome us to the show and a graphic for the WWE Title match at Armageddon is shown.

1) Edge (w/ Vickie) vs. Kung Fu Naki- Edge is out first with Vickie, who is walking but still in the neck brace. I still feel it's a step back in Edge's character to go back to the using of Vickie's naivite to advance himself, but hopefully things will play out that show that there is more depth to this ruse. Fu Naki starts out early with some kicks and a chop. He hits a tornado DDT out of the corner for a near fall, followed by two more near falls on flash pin attempts. Edge tries to cut him off but Fu Naki gains the advantage again and hits the Crane Kick for a false finish. Edge nails Fu Naki with a yakuza kick and then goes into his psychotic trance as he sets up and eventually delivers the spear to Fu Naki for the win. I like the idea of a "complexity" to the make up of Edge, as the announcers allude to, but the Vickie stuff really drags his segments down.

Speaking of that, after replays are shown, Vickie has the mic in the ring and begins to gush over Edge some more. She then says since Edge competed tonight, that his opponents in the triple threat match should have to as well. She announces that Hardy and Triple H will team in a tag team gauntlet. Vickie pulls out her "excuse me" line and then tries to act sinister by saying the only way the gauntlet match end is when Jeff or "Hunter" lose. She then attempts an evil laugh that again, doesn't work even though the announcers try to sell her as "evil." The thing about "evil" is...it should never be dumb.

-The steel cage is shown above the ring that will be used for the Big Show/Undertaker match later on.

Some segment happens here...not sure what will air on the US broadcast.

BREAK

2) WWE Divas Champion Michelle McCool vs. Maria- This is a non-title match. McCool starts off with a back heel trip and then mounts Maria and the exchange positions punching away at each other. They get to the ropes and the ref forces a break. They lock up again and McCool takes Maria over with a headlock. They get back to their feet and McCool knocks Maria down twice with a shoulder tackle before hitting a leg drop and getting a 1 count on a pin attempt. Michelle hits a few shoulders to the mid section in the corner and Maria does a sunset flip for a near fall. They fight in the corner again. Tazz says "we didn't have Divas like this in the original ECW." Is that a bad thing? Maria does some split gimmick and then a roll up for a near fall. Michelle hits a low drop kick for a 1 count. McCool then applies a rear naked choke with a body scissors on Maria. Maria forces break following a jack breaker. Maria nails McCool with a few clotheslines. McCool misses a kick and gets rolled up for the pin. Maria, looking really blown up says she now wants another shot. Michelle looks on shaking her head no in disgust.

BREAK

-Back from break, MVP is already in the ring looking dejected. He says lately he's had an extraordinarily bad run of luck and as a result he lost his "incentive clause." He says he was going to use the money to buy nice holiday gifts for his loved ones, "but that's all out the window now." He mentions they took away his tunnel and his pyro, but they can't take away what make him MVP. He says he's going to give himself a gift that won't cost a dollar, and this punk who likes to pop up and pop off is about to get popped right in the mouth.

Out comes Hurricane Helms, sporting long hair again as well as a do rag and long coat with the long black shorts with the Hurricane logo. Ross says it's been over a year since Helms has been in action. MVP controls early with a slam and a side headlock. MVP takes Helms down but gets stopped in his tracks by the super hero pose and then taken down with an arm drag. Helms ducks and attempted moved by MVP with a roll through and then hits another arm drag into an attempted cross arm breaker that MVP blocks by making it to the ropes. MVP knocks Helms off the ring apron with a yakuza kick. MVP rolls him back in for a pin attempt, gets a 1 count and then starts to fire away with punches. MVP takes Helms over with a snap mare and then applies a crucifix submission hold. MVP uses the ropes and the ref breaks it and Helms comes out swinging. Helms hits a big European uppercut and then a cross body off the top. He set up for the shining wizard, but MVP laid him out with a clothesline. MVP set up for the "play maker" but Helms blocked into a unprettier. Helms tried the shining wizard again, MVP ducked but got caught the second time around and Helms gets the pin.

An emotional Helms celebrated in the ring as MVP convalesced on the outside.

-Jeff Hardy, in full freaky make up is shown walking backstage where Triple H meets up with him. Triple H tells him if he wants to make it to Armageddon not to get in his way; but Hardy says he's "sick of the game." Triple H tells him if he wants to hit him in the head with a chair again, to "try it." Hardy walks off.

BREAK

3) Tag Team Gauntlet

3a) Triple H and Jeff Hardy vs. Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder- Hardy and Hawkins start out. Hardy hits "Whisper in the Wind" in the first 30 seconds. Hardy goes for a cover but gets up and gets in Triple H's face. The Game tags himself in. Apparently while this occurs, Ryder also makes a tag and jumps Triple H. Ryder gets a spinebuster. Triple H stares down Hardy as he sets up and nails Ryder with the Pedigree. Triple H goes for the cover and Hardy climbs to the top and leaps off for the Swanton, which Triple H moves out of the way of and Hardy lands onto Ryder. Hawkins in run off by Hardy and Triple H continues what he started, pinning Zack Ryder. Hardy and Triple H immediately start shoving each other as their next opponents music plays, Miz and Morrison.

BREAK

3b) Triple H and Jeff Hardy vs. The Miz and John Morrison- Back from break Triple H nails The Miz with a punch and knocks him down. Triple H hits a suplex followed up by a knee drop on Miz and gets a near fall. Hardy makes an intense tag and comes in. Hardy hits a running.diving clothesline on the Miz in the corner for a 2 count. Miz gets a shot in and buys himself time to tag in Morrison who comes in a kicks Hardy in the gut. He goes for a neckbreaker but Hardy turns it into a backslide for just a 1 count. Triple H gets the tag back in a tags Morrison in the face with a right hand. Triple H goes to work on the left arm of Morrison and applies an armbar. HHH backs Morrison into the corner and tags Hardy in. Hardy hits a slam and a leg drop for a 1 count. Hardy then actually chops Triple H in the chest to tag out. Miz gets a cheap shot in behind the refs back but to no avail as Triple H nails the face buster on Morrison. Morrison recovers and hits the rebound springboard kick and Miz gets the tag, comes in, and fires away with punches. Morrison gets the tag and they hit a double guy buster on HHH and Morrison gets a near fall and then applies a headlock. Miz is tagged back in and locks on a headlock of his own. Triple H gets out hitting a back suplex. They both get to they feet, Miz misses the seated clothesline in the corner and HHH stumbles close enough to Hardy that Jeff tags himself in. Hardy hits a flying forearm and a sit out gordbuster on Miz and then the same for Morrison. Hardy nails the tip up drop kick but Morrison breaks up the subsequent pin attempt. Triple H tosses Morrison out and follows him. Hardy mule kicks Miz out and then hits a pescado on all 3. Hardy tosses Miz back in, but before Jeff can get into the ring, Triple H grabs him and they start exchanging punches. Both guys take turns tossing each other into the steel steps as the ref counts them (actually just Hardy) out. A pull apart occurs, Triple H clotheslines Hardy over the retaining wall.

BREAK

-Highlights of how the previous match broke down and the pull apart between Hardy and Triple H.

-Backstage Edge says that "that was great" while Vickie calls her plan "brilliant" saying that next week Triple H and Jeff Hardy will go 1-on-1. Edge tells her "baby, that's why you, are so...so brilliant." As they are about to kiss, Jeff Hardy breaks in. Edge says that he wants to clear the air about Jeff claims that he attacked him in his hotel, but Edge says Triple H had the most to gain. Triple H then walks in and Hardy jumps him. They have another pull apart, and after they are removed from the office, Edge and Vickie kiss with Edge showing no signs of a hidden agenda yet.

BREAK

4) ECW Champion Matt Hardy vs. Chavo Guerrero- Hardy takes Chavo down first with a clothesline. Matt hits a back elbow and then an elbow drop for a near fall. Hardy hits the clothesline in the corner followed up by a bulldog. Chavo fights back with a Saito suplex on Hardy and then stomps away. Hardy hits a slam and then the elbow to the back of the head off the middle rope. Hardy sets for the side effect, but Chavo hits two elbows to block and then a standing dropkick for a near fall. Hardy hits a back drop on Chavo but when he turns around, Vladimir Kozlov in the ring and hits a yakuza kick on Matt. Kozlov disposes of Chavo to the outside. Kozlov hits the headbutt to the chest and then ties Hardy in the ropes and throws some weak punches, a kick and a headbutt as Hardy sells like he's dead. Referees come out to escort Kozlov away.

-Backstage The Great Khali is grooming himself in a mirror and takes a swig of mouth wash. Ranjin Singh comes in and slaps him on the back making him swallow the mouth wash. Up next, the Khali kiss cam.

BREAK

-The Khali Kiss Cam- Khali and Ranjin Singh come out with Christmas hats and gimmicks on. They scan the crowd and Singh doesn't find the right person. He then says he wants to give Khali something special, "Santa's Little Helper" and Eve comes out dressed up for a Holiday still 3 weeks away. Khali kisses Eve. Singh ends by saying, "The Punjabi Playboy says, make love, not war." Very interesting since this was taped right before the Mumbia terror attacks in India and actually could play well for Khali since he is such a hero, for whatever reason in his home country.

-The show the steel cage lowering.

BREAK

5) Steel Cage Match: The Big Show vs. The Undertaker- Show backs Taker up into the corner early and nails him with body blows and heatbutts. Show takes Taker down with a side slam and then goes back to the headbutt offense. Show hits a suplex and drags Taker towards the corner. Show sets up for a Vader bomb off the middle rope, Taker moves, but rolls the wrong way and Show's leg lands on him in an ugly way. Show is backed up between the ropes and the cage and Undertaker gets up and throws some punches. Taker comes charging off the ropes with an avalanche like attack on Show (guess that side is the cage has, as the late Gorilla Monsoon would say, been reinforced). Taker charges again and nails a big boot. On his third attempt running at Big Show, he gets knocked down. Show slams Taker into the cage face first.

BREAK

Back from break Show is again pounding away at Undertaker with body blows, runs him head first into the cage, knocks him down with a clothesline and gets a near fall. He rams him into the cage a knocks him down with a clothesline again. Taker takes the cage for a third time, but this time ducks the subsequent clothesline. They exchange punches for a few moments, Taker ducks a clothesline and then hits a leaping one of his own followed by a leg drop for a 2 count. Undertaker goes for "old school" but Show punches him and breaks it up. With Undertaker still seated on the top rope, Show battles with him and eventually gets a superplex and a very near fall. Show has Taker down and climbs to the top rope and teases coming off with something, but Undertaker sits up and Show tries to climb out and is caught. They exchange strikes on the top rope for a few moments, Undertaker gets the better of them, and Show goes down, crashing to the mat. Taker is poised to escape but stops as he is about to climb out and does the throat slash gimmick and makes his way back into the ring, but misses a leg drop or something off the top rope, Show drapes and arm over him and gets a 2 count. Show goes for the chokeslam but Taker reverses it into a DDT for a 2 count. Taker goes for a chokeslam and Big Show counters into one of his own but only gets a 2 count. Big Show loads up for the big punch, but Undertaker blocks it. Taker hits the ropes and Show connects with the big right and Taker collapses to the mat. Show slowly crawls to make a cover, but to his shock, Undertaker sits up. Show grabs Taker by the throat, but Taker locks in the gogoplata aka "The Hells Gate" (I liked "Devil's Triangle" better) for the submission.
