WWE Stars Off TV, Breaking Up The Shield, Occupy Raw Fans, Wrestlemania Undercard, Bray Wyatt’s Gimmick

Why have workers like Kofi Kingston, Titus O’Neil, R-Truth and Xavier Woods been off Raw and Smackdown the last few weeks?

It’s Wrestlemania season and that means the focus is on building to the pay-per-view of the year, which means less opportunities for the midcard. I am more curious about the whereabouts of Rey Mysterio, as no one know seems to have an update on his status. I requested comment from a WWE’s spokesman but was not given one. Given the documented problems with Rey’s knee, I’m wondering why we haven’t seen him on television in the last few weeks.

Am I the only one who thinks it’d be stupid to break up The Shield?

There seems to be a large degree of uncertainty about what to do with The Shield. I heard they would be together at least until Wrestlemania and reported as such a couple of months ago. I’ve heard Wrestlemania XXX scenarios for them that included everything from a tag match against Luke Harper and Erick Rowan to a triple threat between the three of them. As we noted here on WrestlingNewsWorld.com, they could even end up getting thrown in the 30-man Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal. So you’re not the only one that would be against a Shield breakup, however, they do have a shelf life and the feeling in WWE is that all three will do well on their own.

Who were all those fans that got to be in the ring for the “Occupy Raw” segment?

I recognized Rick Achberger, a/k/a Sign Guy, but there were also backstage staffers involved in the segment. I want to take this opportunity to say the Occupy Raw segment was one of the better segments they’ve done in quite some time and helped an otherwise bland episode of Monday Night Raw (excluding the old school Undertaker promo). You can check out a photo Brooklyn Brawler Tweeted below:

WWE was in complete control of the segment and obviously pre-selected the people involved earlier in the day.

When Hulk Hogan announced the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal on Raw, the first thing that came to my mind is – With Andre being “the king of battle royals” wouldn’t it make the most sense to have Big Show go over in the battle royal at Wrestlemania?

Whoever goes over in the 30-man Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal will get a good payoff, however, I’ll admit I’m somewhat disappointed in the match. I appreciate WWE paying tribute to Andre at the 30th anniversary of Wrestlemania but why not do a Money in the Bank ladder match instead? Perhaps I’m still salty over the disappointment of this year’s Royal Rumble but I’m just not sure fans will care about this match. The winner gets a trophy, that’s what they announced. I’d rather see five or six workers battle for a future title shot as the Money in the Bank ladder match creates more intrigue.

Do you think Bray Wyatt’s gimmick can be relevant and entertaining for years to come? How would you tweak the character to achieve that?

This is the million-dollar question that will depend on how far Bray Wyatt will be able to take the gimmick. He has everything he needs to be successful but will this gimmick be timeless like that of The Undertaker or will it fade out as most do? I can’t give you a yes or no answer or even suggestions for tweaks at this juncture. Bray Wyatt is working right now so I say ride it for all it’s worth. Inevitable progression will need to happen to keep fans interested but only time will tell the ultimate story.

From the Ask WNW vault…

January 2012: Is it possible Batista will return to WWE and is there any hope of him being in Miami this year for Wrestlemania XXVIII? - I have maintained Batista will one day return to WWE to wrap up his career as a professional wrestler. He left the company to pursue other opportunities because his contract was up and he was unhappy with the product. Batista has been a vocal critic of WWE’s PG initiative, has gone on record saying John Cena killed hardcore, edgy wrestling and he is no hurry to come back and work with The Miz. Batista has also said the current WWE product is “brutal.” Despite all the negativity and brutally-honest comments, WWE would welcome him back. I believe it will come down to Dave’s desire to return and the right opportunity being available. As for Wrestlemania this year, anything is possible, but any other return is going to take a backseat to The Rock. I can’t imagine Batista wanting to do that, especially given his feelings for John Cena.

I figured out that they were not fans when I looked into the audience and did not see any empty seats.

    • http://www.wrestlingnewsworld.com/ Richard Gray

No, there were real fans there but they’d been pre-picked earlier in the day. For example, Sign Guy was in the audience before and after the segment.

      • jman72485

Some of them were workers too. On the raw fall out on YouTube during the Titus O’Neil segment some of the backstage workers around him were also on the occupy raw segment.

        • http://www.wrestlingnewsworld.com/ Richard Gray

          Yep, as I noted above.

          • jman72485

Cool. That segment though had me grinning ear to ear. Now I’m gonna order WM.

          • Ty

And some of them were real fans.

  • Jbreed

It would be a travesty if The Shield’s only role at WM is the 30 man battle royal. Besides Daniel Bryan and maybe The Wyatt family, The Shield has really been the only reason to watch the WWE over the last year and they deserve much better than just getting thrown into a match where most of the guys involved will be jobbers and other guys with nothing else to do.

As far as breaking up The Shield is concerned, it would be wrong. They’re still hot and it wouldn’t make any sense. What they could do is break one of the members away, maybe Roman Reigns, since he’s the one they plan on pushing the soonest. Then keep Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins together and add a new member.

  • illdecide

I wonder if the Undertaker gimmick would get over that well today. If he were to debut on Raw like this coming Monday, I think it would be tough to not have it being cheezy or lame.

  • Venom

Aside fromUndertsker, every unique WWE character gets humanized. Actually Undertaker did it too with the biker gimmick and his wide Sarah was involved in storyline when they were married.

I think down the road they’ll try to humanize Bray by having his brother Bo Rotundo involved in storylines. Maybe a back story like Raven was supposed to have in WCW where he came from a rich family but decided to live near a swamp. Maybe do all this when it’s time to break up the Wyatt’s if Luke Harper and Eric Rowan decide they’ve had enough.

Speaking of Harper, he really needs to go to the same hair restoration gimmick that Chavo Guerrero and Chris Masters went to.

  • David F.

I would rather have young up and comer win the Battle Royal like Cesaro or Reigns then be pushed right after Mania. No point in Big Show or Kane winning it would serve no purpose. MITB at WM 30 also would have been good idea to split WWE and WHC titles. At least the WHC title can give guys like Sheamus, and Sandow opportunities.

    • Bob’s Diner

I’m curious, how would a Money in the Bank match split the two world titles?

  • Scott Reichart

Richard i still think the Andre Memorial Battle royal is just to get everyone who isnt gonna get a regular match on the Mania Card.

WWE loves to get everyone on the Wrestlemania show be it Pre Show Battle royal in past years or on in backstage segments

With the fact you got already booked in matches Cena/Bray, Orton/Batista, Bryan/HHH, Taker/Lesnar.

You got in the battle Royal Axel, Ryback, Big E, Ziggler, Kingston, Sandow

right there gives you out of the Raw/Smackdown Roster 14 guys out of 48 main roster superstars

if you add the rumored Shield 3 way (17 now), Outlaws vs Usos (21).

if you add a potential NXT/wwe 8 man tag of Cesaro/Neville/Dallas/Zayn vs Swagger/Acsension/Graves (Cesaro & Swagger takes the WWE Main Roster total 23)

that leaves 25 main roster guys left for 24 Battle Royal Slots

    • Mysterion

I still think Zayn Cesaro at Mania would tear that son bitch down.

      • Scott Reichart

But the problem is Zayn/Cesaro has been done in NXT 4 times in the last 6 months. we need a breather from that match for a while

        • Bob’s Diner

          Not everyone watches NXT

  • Stéphane Abate

why should we pay 8.95$ a month for infos that other sites are providing for free….

  • ldb

Richard I think its interesting you put the Batista q from the vault on there. The reason is I believe with all my heart that they will screw over Daniel Bryan again at WM. I don’t want it to happen and I realize I m for sure in the minority believing this, but I feel they will do it to get Batista a level of heat we have not seen in a long long time. I just think Vince throws a middle finger to the crowd with the booking at Mania.

    • Jbreed

Or maybe they will do it because Vince McMahon figures he’s done enough for the fans by inserting Daniel Bryan in the main event but there’s no way he’s gonna let the fans influence his decision on who’s gonna win the match

    • Xavier

I get the feeling that Bryan will get screwed as well but ultimately win the title at Extreme Rules, similar to the Rock’s journey back to the title back in 99/00

      • Rayner Chee-bai

Xavier my friend please stop giving WWE creative ideas lol

      • Bob’s Diner

Yup I think exactly the same thing.

      • JR Texx (Jamie)

I think that too, because putting Bryan over at Wrestlemania means putting Orton and Batista, that means they pretty much wasted the Royal Rumble and/or the EC since this story is like 3/4 weeks away from ‘mania.

  • Xavier

I get people wanting too see The Shied stay together and all but really what more can they do with them that hasn’t already been done/ They’ve already ran through Daniel Bryan, John Cena, Randy Orton, Kane, Big Show, Sheamus, Mark Henry, Ryback, CM Punk, The Usos, The Brotherhood, The Wyatts etc etc. Who’s left for them to feud with at this point? It’s better to break them up now while they’re hot then too wait until the faction becomes stale. It worked with Evolution and that break up angle was a pretty big success.

    • Venom

I think they can be a face team for awhile then have the tension again with Dean Ambrose. Right now I see them more of a neutral team leaning towards heel. They can be a face team (since they get cheered for anyways) for a few more months then by summer break them up.

    • Jbreed

The thing is nowadays the WWE seems reluctant to push one young star let alone three. So if they split up, let’s say Roman Reigns gets pushed but then Ambrose and Rollins could get lost in the shuffle.

  • Chris W

I’ve said it previously, but they should have had a MITB match.

You then get Daniel Bryan to pull double/triple duty:-

Beat hunter to earn a MITB spot.

    Win MITB

Cash in on the winner of Orton/Batista at the end of the night

Achieve the biggest wrestling pop of all time.

    Profit

    • Mysterion

While fans are over as hell on Bryan getting potentially double duty on mania how do you think the guys in the 30 man feel? Yes, they get on the PPV but it’s easy to overlook 90% of the guys in that match. These are guys who’ve worked their arses to the bone to get into the card and then they see Bryan get two premier spots on the card. He’s honna get the inevitable heat from boys in the back so triple duty would just alienate far to many boys the wrong way.

      • Rayner Chee-bai

still better than Batista gasping for air in the premier spots on the card no offense…

        • Mysterion

It offends me in literally no way. I think Dave coming back has thus far been the worse handled situation by HHH and Vince in very recent memory.

    • Bob’s Diner

      Talk about overkill…
Why not just have Daniel Bryan come out and beat the entire roster during the night? Then beat Hulk Hogan as well?

I get that everyone likes him, but there are other wrestlers on the card that all deserve their moments too.

      • Jbreed

The people who ask for too much of Daniel Bryan will probably be the first ones who get sick and tired of him and hope for a change in the main event scene.

      • Xavier

        Lol no kidding

  • Bob’s Diner

I’m all for the battle royal match. Gets a lot of people on the card and creates a nice spectacle for the show. When you have Daniel Bryan pulling double duty, plus Undertaker vs Lesnar and other potential exciting matches, the need for a Money in the Bank match just seems overkill. Would make the PPV in June/July redundant as well

  • Jbreed

I have a feeling the purpose of the 30 man battle royal is to throw all the midcarders into one single match which means less undercard matches and more time for the top matches on the card.

    • Xavier

That’s not Necessarily a bad thing

      • Jbreed

It’s not but I’d rather see Big E, for example, defend his IC title instead of getting thrown into the battle royal.

  • Scott Davies

I don’t see The Shield in the Battle Royal. I see them doing a Triple threat as a simple Tag match with Luke Harper & Erick Rowen with out bray Wyatt will not be the same.

Whoever wins the battle royal I think will be somebody they are going to push. I bet there will be a few legends in it.

  • BigMike

I think that along with the trophy, they should get a future title shot like a MITB. IMO the MITB match was the highlight of WM (( morrison flipping off with the ladder is STILL epic))

  • Gary Robert

Battle Royals are only interesting when you don’t see them too often. Now we get to see Royal Rumble and another battle royal every year just two months apart? Not interested. Doesn’t matter if you attach a HOF name to it. The only good thing about it, is the fact it gets other workers on the show….but really, who cares who wins.

    • Guest

      Agreed

  • Bob’s Diner

    Hey Richard,
What’s going on over at wwenews.net? Every time I visit a page there, I see people’s comments removed because they don’t agree with the writer. Can’t the people writing these ‘articles’ handle criticism?

    • BooRG

It happens here too, when people don’t agree with Richard and his opinio…. err, I mean, “news”.

  • John

Alexander Rusev is a lock to win the Andre the Giant Battle Royal, in my opinion of course.

  • Guest

Bad News Brown is going to win the Battle Royal and Bret Hart will destroy him afterwards along with the trophy…
