The Smackdown Breakdown - Kings Don't Win Wars, Soldiers Do

Hello everyone and welcome back once again to another edition of the Smackdown Breakdown. It will be interesting to see how the show comes across this week given that the majority of talent were on WWE's tour of Saudi Arabia. Coming hot off the heels of a pretty decent Raw on Monday I have the hope WWE will give us a strong episode of Smackdown. From what I have heard and seen online this week it certainly sounds like this weeks show really held itself up well. So without saying too much more about the show itself lets get into this weeks Breakdown.

Triple HSegment - 4 stars

How cool is it that Evolution are back together? I remember I had kind of been in and out of watching WWE around the time they first formed and when I got back into it properly again they were a real strong stable and they were awesome as a group to watch. The experience of Triple H and Flair at the time was great for Batista and Randy Orton to learn from. Now we fast forward to 2014 and although they may be one man down, Evolution look like they could go on one of their best runs to date now given the experience and maturation of the group. Triple H talked about being more proud of The Shield than any other talent and how he perhaps gave them too much power and stroke but Monday night they were humbled. I liked the quote that "kings don't win wars, soldiers do" as well as "soldiers are simply the currency in which empires are bought and sold". Triple H talked about The Shield losing their value and how Evolution will show The Shield what true power really is. This was another great Triple H promo. Say what you want about this man but he is truly one of the all time greats and still knows how to play the crowd. He really sold me even more on this Evolution and Shield program and I can't wait to see where things go.

Alberto Del Rio vs. Big E. - 3 stars

Am I the only one who found the promo Big E. did before his match on the screen in the corner over the top? It just didn't feel real at all to me. The match itself between these two was ok. I thought parts of it were kind of sloppy and this made it a little difficult to enjoy the match but if you look past that it was an average match at best. Big E. hitting the big splash on Del Rio in particular toward the end just looked awful due to the positioning of Del Rio. What's worse for Big E. is wining the match by DQ because Del Rio wouldn't let go of his arm breaker but at least he got some retribution by hitting Del Rio with the Big Ending. Not the best match but not the worst either.

Paul Heyman Segment - 3.5 stars

Heyman draws heat just by saying who he is and it's crazy. Heyman knows how to really play the crowds reaction and make it worse. All he had to do was tell us several times that his client Brock Lesnar conquered the Streak and it didn't take long to get the desired reaction. He probably went on a little too long for my liking but that's ok, he wanted to draw an adequate reaction. And how does he end? By reminding us once again that his client Brock Lesnar conquered the Streak! He drew big heat but it just didn't serve much purpose for me other than to remind us about Brock breaking the Streak.

Paige vs. Aksana - 3.5 stars

Maybe I'm just a biased Brit but I just love Paige. She really is a breath of fresh air in a Divas division that really needed something new to continue the overall improvement of the division. Aksana shouldn't really be given a microphone and they may as well have just had her blindside Paige instead. Luckily Paige was able to get a decent looking match out of Aksana that I enjoyed. Paige doing that submission is just bad ass cause it looks like it would really hurt. A decent outing for the Divas and I think given a more capable opponent Paige will show everyone what she really can do.

El Torito vs. Hornswoggle - 3.5 stars

I can't believe I'm actually writing about this. After seeing the confrontation on Main Event, and previously at the Hall of Fame, I had a feeling that this was going to happen somewhere down the line and lucky me I got the joy of talking about it. What I can't knock about them is their intensity throughout the match. This was never meant to be a serious match and it was the right kind of comedy spot for them to have but what surprised me most is it was actually kind of entertaining. Hornswoggle really milked the match for all it was worth and managed to at least draw some heat. Torito's finisher was pretty cool to see, even if he didn't quite hit it right. For some reason I can't see this being the last time these two square off. I would personally like to see them in a step ladder on a pole match but I doubt I will get that one.

Bad News Barrett Segment - 3 stars

I love Barrett and I just can't help but keep saying his "I've got some bad news" catchphrase to my kids. It was a quick spot and nothing to really write home about but I enjoyed it, especially the fact he managed to put the audience down for the size of their brains by applauding the El Torito and Hornswoggle match.

R-Truth vs. Alexander Rusev - 3.5 stars

I've been saying for weeks that I want to see Rusev actually get in the ring and wrestle and recently I've had my wish. He looks so damn intense in the ring and I have to say he was worth the wait to watch again. Yes I've watched him in NXT, but I do feel he has stepped up his game since moving up to the main roster. R-Truth gave a decent account of himself with the brief offense he was allowed before Rusev just took over and dominated. Lana is a great mouth piece and handler for Rusev and I can see a bright future for this pairing if they carry on. He asserted his dominance at the end by not only destroying R-Truth but by beating down Xavier Woods.

Fandango vs. Santino - 3 stars

I'm really impressed by the choice of Layla with Fandango, it gives both something different going forward. Fandango pretty much controlled this match and Santino was more there to hit his standard spots and do some comedy. It was a pretty quick match with Santino picking up the win after Layla tried to steal the Cobra, which Emma soon saw to. I found the end of the match entertaining with Emma losing the use of her arm after Santino hit her hand with the Cobra. It just would have been better if it had been longer for me.

Sheamus vs. Batista - 4 stars

This was a pretty hard hitting match between these two men. I'm pleased to now see Batista working matches on what looks to almost be a weekly basis now as that should help with him getting blown up during matches. Both men really gave it their all in this match and it was a perfect match to end the show with. It was very much a back and forth contest, although Batista seemed to dominate more during the middle of the match and looked vicious. I thoroughly enjoyed this and it could easily have been a Pay Per View match. It had everything you could want from near falls to drama throughout. Batista winning only helped solidify the fact that The Animal has rediscovered his vicious side and if anything it really put him over as Evolution's dominant force.

Overall Show Rating - 3.5 stars

While the show wasn't loaded with top stars I felt WWE still managed to put on a really good show this week. The main event was solid and it was great to see two former champions in Sheamus and Batista put on a solid performance. Despite the fact it was a joke match I do admit to enjoying the El Torito and Hornswoggle match, and once again the NXT stars in Paige, who gave a really good account of herself, and Alexander Rusev, who put in another solid display, continued to shine their respective stars for the world to see. Triple H cut an absolutely solid promo and I really am looking forward to seeing this program between Evolution and The Shield. The main event was definitely my favorite part of this weeks show and I look forward to seeing whether there is anything more they can do with Batista and Sheamus in the future.
