The Smackdown Breakdown: The New Era Is Not BS JBL!!!

Hello, WNW people, and welcome to The Smackdown Breakdown. I’m your old mate Mitch “Big M” Adams, and it's a pleasure to be writing this once again. Now, I owe you an apology for the lack of Breakdown last week. But I can assure you I had a good reason for not writing it. My beautiful sister and my very lucky brother-in-law welcomed their first child on the day of Smackdown’s airing in Australia. So obviously my mind was a far more focused on that than on anything WWE related.

As for Breakdown being a day late this week! A bad cold and the heat of an Australian summer is a horrible combination. I’m sick as a dog! But you're the WNW people, and the WNW people deserve a Smackdown Breakdown. Especially after how amazingly good Smackdown was this week! But the segments may be a little shorter than you are used too.

So, without further ado, let's get stuck into what happened on Smackdown this week shall we?

John Cena Return Promo > B
This was a mixed bag of a promo for me. While the intensity and almost heel like nature of the promo shone through! John did have a few slip ups in regards to trying to control the crowd. And Chicago made him pay for it!

And quite frankly, I did not like the way Cena talked about the next generation of WWE talent. I have been outspoken about why I think WWE has struggled to create new main event stars the last few years. In my opinion, WWE has struggled to create new stars and have become over-reliant on names from the past working part time schedules because any new talent in the last decade who gain some steam have been immediately fed to John Cena. And Cena wins all of his programs in such an overwhelming manner that most who work with him never recover. Despite what Road Dogg says, wins and losses really do matter when it comes to building up talent!

And there has been more than one occasion on the mic where I feel new talents have been buried either directly or indirectly by Cena or by WWE when talking about Cena. JBL’s “The new era is BS” line on Commentary after Cena’s promo is a clear example.

But Cena, addressing his critics and internet rumours was a nice touch.
And the closest we will probably ever come to Cena being a heel!

Backstage Segment: Miz Will Only Be Interviewed by Renee > B+
Miz demanding to only to be interviewed by Renee while hiding behind a wall of security was the pinnacle of heel mode for the Miz! And I think it works.

WWE Smackdown Tag Team Title Fatal Four-Way Elimination Match
The Wyatt Family (c) (Harper & Orton) [w /Bray Wyatt] vs. American Alpha vs. Beauty and the Man-Beast vs. The Usos > A

What a beautiful match! Everyone involved honestly looked like a million bucks in there. Heath Slater and Rhino is the clearest example of how much the brand split has helped today’s WWE talents. Heath had a bad botch of the top rope in this match and looked like he tweaked his knee or his ankle. But, I suppose it will only add to the breakup storyline between him and Rhino.

The Uso’s heel turn has kinda fallen flat the last few weeks, but that’s not their fault. They worked as faces at Survivor Series for the sake of Raw vs Smackdown, and that killed a lot of their momentum. But, they looked impressive in the ring in this match.

It would appear that the Wyatt Family and Orton storyline may be starting to come to its crescendo. I still hate how they are recycling the Wyatt/Bryan storyline from 2014. It especially doesn’t work as far as Orton’s persona goes. Expect Orton to turn on Bray setting up a match at Wrestlemania very soon. But, at least Luke Harper looked good, as he always does!

American Alpha are probably the two best mat wrestlers in WWE today.
They are so over with the crowd, and they consistently put on wonderful matches. I am so happy they are closing out 2016 with a well deserved Tag Team Title run. Although, I wish they wouldn’t go commando under their ring gear! It leaves little to the imagination, and I saw more of them in this match than I wanted to see.

All in all, a great opening match, and a heartwarming moment for Jordan and Gable.

Backstage Interview: Dolph Ziggler > F
Dolph running through all his failures and saying he’s still got a chance to succeed in WWE blah blah blah. I can’t get invested in this guy anymore no matter what he does. Not after he’s had the rug pulled from underneath him during every single last push he’s ever had! The man is now just glorified jobber, plain and simple.

Backstage Interview: Ellsworth and Carmella > F
This storyline makes no sense what so ever! If Carmella is just using Ellsworth, what on earth does she have to gain? It’s obvious she’ll turn on him at some point to score some cheap heat. And it is the pinnacle of lazy writing from WWE creative UGH!!!

WWE Smackdown Women's Title Match - Alexa Bliss (c) vs. Becky Lynch > B+
While this match was good (how could it not have been) it wasn’t as good as I thought it would be. Maybe it was the crowd chanting for CM Punk that took away from it; I don’t know. But still, there was a lot to like here.

These two are incapable of having a bad match they are both so talented. And while I usually leave comments about fashion to Kendra on Raw is Blogged, I have to say I loved Becky’s new ring gear. The strategically placed tears in her top made her look both very tough and very sexy. BIG M LIKEY VERY MUCH!!! At the risk of sounding a little creepy, I want to marry Becky Lynch and have no less than four soulless red headed children with her!

But I digress, the finish of this match featured both a high and a low. The high was the way Alexa Bliss used the fact she’s double jointed to sell the Dis-Arm-Her. People who are squeamish may have had to look away! But those of us who are a little morbid find that kind of stuff very cool.

The low, was obviously whoever they had play dress up and cost Becky the match. Obviously whoever was under the persona of “La Luchadora” this week will be Becky’s next feud. But it still felt silly to me!
WINNER via PINFALL: Alexa Bliss

Backstage Interview: Renee, Miz, Maryse and Dean Ambrose > A
I loved this segment so much! I loved Maryse snapping at Renee. I loved Miz acting like a condescending jerk. I loved Renee acting like she really didn’t want to be there. All of it leading up to the setup attack by Dean!

This was a great way to feature Renee in this feud without getting her too involved and continue to acknowledge the real life relationship between Young and Ambrose on TV. And the look on her face, when she saw Dean sneaking up behind Miz in that security shirt, was priceless. I’m not much of a romantic, and I usually don’t comment on Wrestlers personal lives out of respect. But I have to say, Dean and Renee’s relationship is clearly one that’s meant to last (sorry all you Ambrose fan girls).

Oh, and Dean’s line into the walkie talkie was obviously hilarious!

Backstage Interview: Nikki Bella > F
During the open thread, many people including myself were saying how happy we were that Nikki had not been featured on Smackdown this week. Then our spirits were broken!

The only good thing I see coming out of Nikki Bella’s latest storyline is that WWE has acknowledged the fact she is their version of Kim Kardashian. Unfortunately, WWE’s higher-ups have convinced themselves that this is a good thing.

Backstage Interview: Baron Corbin > B
Short, sweet but effective promo cut by Corbin. I am so glad he was drafted to Smackdown and was allowed to do his “Indy Killer” gimmick that got him over in NXT.

WWE Title Triple Threat Match - AJ Styles (c) vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Baron Corbin > A+
WHAT A MAIN EVEN MATCH!!! This match will at the very least receive an honourable mention in my best matches of 2016 articles to be posted in the new year (stay tuned for those, I promise their good).

The ebb and flow of this match perfectly paced. All three men worked their arses off and put on one hell of a performance to close out the year.

The table spot and the dual Zig Zag/End of Days were both great highlights! Now while Corbin did botch the breaking up of the pinfall, I don’t think anyone can say he doesn’t belong in the main event after his work in this match. I am very excited for his future in WWE. He’s going to have an incredible 2017, mark my words.

Just an amazing match, and the best way for WWE to close out 2016.
Winner: AJ Styles

Post Match Shenanigans: Cena Makes His Challenge > D
I dislike the fact that WWE expects us to think all Cena has to to get a Title shot is ask for one! But I loved AJ’s intensity towards Cena in the star down.

Overall Grade: A
This was one of the best episodes of WWE TV all year. And I can not wait to find out what Smackdown scored in the TV ratings. I can easily see Smackdown beating Raw this week. They consistently keep putting on better shows than Raw, and WWE’s audience knows that.
