The Smackdown Breakdown: RIP Sister Abigail!

Hello WNW People, my name is Mitch “Big M” Adams, and I am proud to welcome you to the Smackdown Breakdown. Let’s get sucked into what happened on this week's episode of Smackdown Live, shall we?

Backstage Segment: Daniel Bryan, Shane McMahon, AJ Styles & Luke Harper > B
I keep forgetting just how big Luke Harper is! He toward over everyone else in this segment. He has a pretty good presence too! The delayed “Thanks” he gave to Shane, and Daniel felt very effective.

Miz TV: Miz, Maryse, John Cena & Nikki Bella > A
I have to give it to Smackdown’s creative team here; they somehow managed to get fans invested into the build up to a mix tag match that no one outside of the Total Diva’s viewership would want to see. The idea of writing this segment purely with Smarks in mind was a true stroke of genius.

Miz quoting Pro-IWC fan criticisms of John Cena (some of which is honestly pretty valid) in his promo was a joy to watch. As was Cena quoting Anti-IWC fan criticisms of wrestlers like the The Miz and Pro-IWC fans (some of which are also pretty valid) was also cool to see. It would seem that Road Dogg has been observing the Pro and Anti-IWC online debates as much as he’s been trying to participate in them!

Yeah, the segment eventually broke down into an archaic “Diva” style segment once Maryse and Nikki got involved, but that’s all Nikki and Maryse know, sadly! But, in the end, it still didn’t take away from how truly awesome this segment was.

2 Out Of 3 Falls Match: Becky Lynch vs Mickie James > C
I was so pumped to see this match after it was announced! But honestly, it left me wanting, quite frankly. It wasn’t a bad match by any stretch of the imagination, but it wasn’t all that good either. There were a few moments of miscommunication between Becky and Mickie that resulted in one or two missed cues, and it’s not the first time it’s happened to them.

But, I don’t think either is to blame for how this match turned out. Sometimes, for whatever reason, two talented workers just can’t seem to gel in the ring. And I think that’s what’s happening with Becky and Mickie. Not even Alexa Bliss’s run-in could have helped them get this match over with the crowd.
Winner: Becky Lynch

Backstage Promo: Luke Harper > A
Harper’s promo work is honestly getting better and better every week!

Bray Wyatt Promo > A
Short, sweet but always brilliant! This is your usual Bray Wyatt promo. It’s not just his gimmick guys…the man is simply wonderful on the stick!

Backstage Segment: Alexa Bliss & Natalya > B
Okay, WWE we get it! You have ties with Trump, and The Oscars broadcast focused a lot of time on making fun of him. But the jokes you're making about them are just as unfunny as the ones they made about Trump. Grow up and move on already will you!

Natalya teasing a feud with Alexa for the Women's Title was surprising, but I’m not against it in any way. Nattie is the most underrated female worker in WWE, and she’s held that position for the last eight years! I’d say it’s long overdue for her to get her chance in the spotlight!

No.1 Contender Match: AJ Styles vs Luke Harper > B
This match was a lot of fun, but I wish it had gone longer. Plus, the ending of the match just felt so bloody lazy. I mean, we all know AJ is not main eventing Wrestlemania (even though he should be) and they have to plant seeds for AJ vs Shane. But I could think of a dozen more creative ways to pull that off.
Winner: AJ Styles

Backstage Segment: Cena, Nikki, Ellsworth & Carmella > F
And to think, I once considered Ellsworth the most unexpected but brilliant creative success in WWE for many years. Now he’s playing Carmella’s bitch-boy poking fun and Cena and Nikki at her behest. I am not Looking forward to the mixed tag match between these four next week.

In-Ring Segment: Dean Ambrose, Baron Corbin & Career Jobber A.K.A. Curt Hawkins > B+
Corbin continues to impress every single week on the blue brand. Yeah, his portion of this segment was clearly pre-recorded, but it’s obvious his pro skills are progressing nicely. Besides, Ambrose was always going to own the live crowd with his charisma, humor, and intensity. So this was the right call by WWE creative and higher-ups. I am so looking forward to these two working matches for the IC Title! It’s going to be so bloody good!

Side note: Can I just ask why WWE would spend time and money promoting Curt Hawkins through vignettes (that were actually entertaining) only for him to go back to being a career jobber? Seems like such a waste to me!

Chairs Match: Dolph Ziggler vs Apollo Crews > B
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again…Apollo Crews has gotten the rough end of the stick since debuting on the main roster. Yeah, he’s not Mr. Personality, but there are dozens of Hall of Famers who weren’t either. And considering he looked pretty good in this match, I think people should give him a chance!

Ziggler is slowly starting to win me over with this heel turn. There are still a few adjustments that need to be made, but he seems to be on the right track. However, I’m still waiting for the moment that he gets the rug pulled from underneath him mid-push yet again!
Winner: Dolph Ziggler

In-Ring Segment: Bray Wyatt & Randy Orton > A & F
Wow, we all knew the payoff to this Orton/Wyatt program was coming…but I don’t think any of us expected just how awesome it would be. This wasn’t a very PG segment, but who gives a shit! The image of the rocking chair going back and forth, the quick cut shots to the exposed earth under the floorboards with worms and maggots forcing their to the top soil suggesting they’ve been feasting on Sister Abigail’s body! Very hammer horror, very cool, very effective.

Randy was at his best promo wise here, and the image of him dressed all in black striking his trademark pose after setting the Wyatt compound alight is something I think will truly live on forever. Yes the payoff to this storyline was epic, and I loved every last second of it, but that still sadly doesn’t change how I feel about how this storyline was built up!

I know I’m going to cop flak for this, but the fact remains they could have done this weeks ago, and it would have been even more effective! But instead Creative decided to use the build up for this program to set up all the other Smackdown Wrestlemania feuds. They could have easily done this weeks ago and still have found more creative and far less obvious ways to plant the seeds for AJ vs Shane and the mixed tag match without having to use the build up of this feud to set them all up! And before you say it, they still would’ve been able to do the opening segment of this weeks show if they had!

And that, in my humble opinion is just plain lazy writing! If there is one thing, I simply can not stand it's lazy writing. I know many of you will probably disagree, and I encourage you to leave your thoughts in the comment section. But this is my opinion of it, and I’m sticking to it.

Overall Grade > B+
Despite how I feel about how certain storyline was built up over time, it doesn’t change the fact that Smackdown was pretty bloody good this week. And further proof that the blue brand is simply the better show.
