The Smackdown Breakdown: Taking Souls and Digging Holes

Hello, WNW people and welcome to another edition of the Smackdown Breakdown! I apologise for the absence of a Breakdown last week. But all the chaos regarding the shock U.S. Election results which made headlines all around the world, I thought it would be best if we waited a week for things to cool down so we can all get back into the swing of things Pro Wrestling related.

However, I must remind you all of WNW’s strict no politics to rule in the comments section. We are simply not the place to discuss things of that nature.

Now with that out of the way, let’s dive into what happened on this week’s edition of Smackdown Live, shall we?

Opening Segment: Bryan & Shane > A
I love the chemistry between Shane and Daniel that has developed over the last few months. And the energy the two brought to this segment helped get everyone in the arena pumped!

Intercontinental Title Match: Dolph Ziggler vs The MIZ > A&F
Ok, you will never hear me complain about this match! This match was awesome from beginning to end. But, and this is something people on the open thread were disagreeing with me over, I hated the outcome.

Not because a heel cheated to win (duh, that’s what heels do). Not because Ziggler lost the Title after holding for little over a month (I knew it wouldn’t be long before the carpet was pulled from underneath him mid push yet again). Not because Maryse interfered again (again, that’s to be expected). Not because the Spirit Squad interfered (annoying, but again to be expected)

I hated the outcome of the match because it gives away which brand will control the IC Title after Survivor Series. I’m not going to spoil the outcome of Sami Zayn vs Miz if you guys haven’t figured it out yet. But I will say Zayn vs Ziggler would have been a far more difficult match outcome to predict.

Mick Foley was spot on when he claimed on the state of the WWE Universe address that Miz was having a career year. And it’s proof in my mind that the brand split was a much-needed step in WWE programming. Does WWE have all the bugs worked out yet…No! But the fact that I and many other fans now consider Miz a main event level talent (something many would have scoffed at six months ago) shows that workers have a greater chance of success with two WWE brands.

Side note: Did anyone else notice that Maryse almost had a “camel toe” situation going on with her outfit? Normally I leave statements about fashion to Kendra, but that one was so obvious I simply can’t ignore it.
I’d be amazed if WWE doesn’t start telling her to tone it down. Which will be a sad day for all the male viewers of Smackdown Live, but I digress. Like I said, I loved the match, but I hated the outcome.
Winner & New Champion The Miz

Backstage Segment: Bryan, Alexa Bliss & Natalya > B
I love the dynamic Bryan has with the Smackdown women’s division. It’s endlessly entertaining! Bryan telling Alexa that she’ll get her rematch after Survivor Series was to be expected, but it still excites me a great deal. I could watch Becky and Alexa wrestle forever.

I honestly don’t know where this song lyric gimmick for Natalya came form. But I guess creative had to come up with something for her after her heel turn flopped so badly. I could really do without that bloody whistle, though.

Oney Larkin vs Kallisto > C
The former Bif Busick really did get the worst name change in WWE developmental. I hope if he gets a push in NXT he will be given a new name. But it was cool to see him make an appearance this week on the main roster even if he was just jobbing to Kallisto.

I’m still a fan of Kallisto and think he’s been placed at the wayside ever since he dropped the U.S. Title a few months ago. But his botching of that springboard really didn’t help his cause. Although, we should remember that even the best workers of all time botched now and then.

Short match that really showed what Larkin can do more than it showed what Kallisto can do.
Winner: Kalisto

Backstage Segment: Smackdown Tag Team’s & “KING BOOKAH” > B+
A lot of people on open thread marked out for the return of “KING BOOKAH” to help motivate the Smackdown Tag Teams. But personally, I prefer old school Booker T coming back to the surface and delivering his catchphrases to the Fashion Police a great deal more. I never did like the King Booker gimmick and thought it was an unnecessary change at that point of Booker’s career. Still, a fun segment referencing Smackdown’s history, though.

Nikki Bella vs Carmella > No Grade
We all know how I feel about Nikki Bella and Carmella at this point, so I’m not going to talk about them. And as this match ended abruptly due to unusual circumstances I’m not going to grade it.

I am, however, as the Captain of WNW’s Smackdown Predicts Team going to address the “Invasion” of Smackdown by Raw’s Women’s Survivor Series team and give a clear message to WNW’s Raw predicts team captain Kendra Bunyon!

Raw tried to invade the blue brand's ring…and got their arses thrown out!!! You still think Raw will be victories at Survivor Series Ken? I don’t think so LOSERS!!!
Winner: No Contest

Attention! Attention! Mitch has officially lost his mind!

I've tried to be good and not step into Mitch's little SD Breakdown here, as it's rude, but he's called my Raw Predicts Team losers, and I cannot stand for that. I have the strongest Predicts Team, and Raw has the best Superstars, there's no way that SD or the WNW SD Predicts Team will have a chance at Survivor Series. Raw and my guys will clean up, then we will see where the high horse Mitch has been on has run off to. I laugh in the face of Mitch's bravado!

That is all!

Queen of WNW - KB

Ten Man Tag Match: Team Smackdown vs Team Jobbers > C
For the life of me, I can’t work out why the Headbangers and the Spirit Squad are still doing on Smackdown. And are the Uso’s babyfaces again?

This match was honestly a bit of a shambles booking wise. But American Alpha and the Uso’s made it worth watching. I also have to say that I LOVE AA’s fishing move. It’s both pretty and brutal at the same time! And that’s exactly how a Tag Team finishing move should look like.
Winner’s: Team Smackdown

The Cutting Edge: Edge, Main Event Team Smackdown & The Undertaker > A

We need to give Tony Chimel a little love here WNW people. It’s simply not fair that he is considered a lousy WWE ring announcer. Clearly, he is the only one who can truly give the proper introduction to “The Rated-R SUUUUUUUPERSTAR” Edge. So WNW people, I want you to give Chimel a little love in the comment section, please. He deserves it!

I honestly think that this was the best closing segment of any WWE program in quite some time. The promo work from all concerned was on point and “Flawless” (See what I did there). The banter, the arguing, Edge being gracious enough to put over James Ellsworth! I can’t find a single fault in this segment. And how awesome was Undertaker’s promo? Seriously, I got chills when he essentially said if Team Smackdown loses they will all answer to him!

Now some people on open thread complained about Taker’s appearance being apparently pointless. And many were hoping that Undertaker would announce he was replacing Shane McMahon on Smackdown’s Main Event Survivor Series Team.

But here is the thing, Not everything has to mean something in WWE. It was just cool to see Taker return and cut a promo. It was a memorable moment for fans who realise what Undertaker meant to the success of Smackdown during the first brand split.

More to the point, we all know at this stage of his career, Undertaker sadly only has one or two matches left in him. And those matches should be kept for Wrestlemania. So stop nit-picking and just enjoy every appearance of Undertaker we get. Because we may not get too many more of them!

In closing, I think Smackdown has Survivor Series in the bag!

Overall Show Grade: B
There was a lot of filler in this week's episode, but that is now the norm in go home shows these days. The closing segment was well worth tuning in this week alone. And the appearances of Smackdown legends like Edge, KING BOOKAH and in my opinion, the greatest performer in WWE history The Undertaker was a highlight of the year as far as I am concerned. And once again, I say Smackdown put on the better show than Raw yet again this week.
