The Smackdown Breakdown: Welcome To The Land Of Inconsistency

Hello WNW People! Mitch “Big M” Adams here welcoming you to another edition of…The Smackdown Breakdown. Which is, of course, an opinion based review of Smackdown Live each week if you did not know that before! So without further ado, let’s get stuck into what happened on Smackdown Live this week, shall we?

Jinder Mahal Taking Photo’s With The WWE Title Belt: Jinder Mahal & Shane McMahon > F
Watching Mahal have a photo shot holding the WWE World Title belt felt like a stiff kick in the nuts. With a steel cap boot!

In-Ring Segment: Shane McMahan, Chris Jericho, AJ Styles & Kevin Owens > A
I really liked this segment because it had Jericho pumping up the crowd like only he can plus it helped set up a future feud featuring KO and Styles which is sure to tear the house down!

Jinder Mahal (w/ The Singh Brothers) vs Sami Zayn > F-
Ok, I get that Jinder needed a win on Smackdown to look halfway like a legitimate threat to Randy Orton at Backlash. But why did it have to be against Sami Zayn? Poor old Sami could be the next Daniel Bryan if WWE higher-ups weren't determined to job him out every bloody week. And for the love of everything sane, Jinder needs to watch those blows of his! The last thing anyone needs is to be concussed by him.
Winner Jinder Mahal

Backstage Segment: Ziggler Complains about Nakamura > B
Ziggler comments about Nakamura being pushed to the moon on his debut to the main roster without anyone complaining, was WWE trying (and failing) to be “subtle” in their digs at the IWC? LOL! And I shall explore this supposed double standard in my next House Of M, so please stay tuned. To be fair though, this feud with Nakamura is the best thing to ever happen to Dolph. The guy is FINALLY starting to look like a legit heel!

Tye Dillinger vs Aiden English > B
A nice short little match where English got to sell his singer gimmick and Dillinger debuted a sick new finisher. A Windmill GTS type of move!

Backstage Segment: English & “Ronnie” Make The List! > A
Jericho may be a step slower in the ring (age catches up with everyone, sadly) but man alive he is still one of the most entertaining people on WWE TV!

Backstage Beatdown: The “Welcoming Committee” Takes Out Charlotte > D
We al knew that the beatdown wouldn’t be enough to stop Charlotte competing, but still…they could have made it look more vicious! Charlotte got treated with kid gloves in this segment.

Tag That Turned Into A Handicap, Then Turned Into A Tag Again: Naomi & Charlotte vs Carmella & Natalya > B
I laughed at Carmella’s low round kicks having no effect Naomi’s lower body being too “Bootylicious!” It’s always the little stuff like that can help matches that look boring on paper stand out. As I mentioned above, we all knew this wouldn’t stay a handicap match, and Charlotte would make her way to the ring eventually. Not only did the backstage beatdown look weak but Charlotte’s attempts to sell were pretty lacklustre as well. The outcome of the match was predictable, but it was still enjoyable.
Winner’s Carmella & Charlotte

Post-Match Shenanigans: Becky Lynch Teases Joining The “New Wench Order” But Comes To The Rescue Of Naomi & Charlotte Instead > A
I loved the fake-out with Becky Lynch! Especially her shaking hands with everyone but stopping with Ellsworth and inciting him to give her a hug instead before throwing his arse into Tamina. The only thing that would have made it better was if she T-Bone Suplex him instead!

Some people were upset that Becky didn’t turn heel, but I think it was the right call. Becky is a super popular worker who appeals to men, women, and children. Plus, there is a lack of Female babyface’s on the blue brand right now, and strong heels like “The Welcoming Committee” (I still say “New Wench Order” sounds better) need strong babyfaces to feud with.

Dolph Ziggler vs Botch Cara > D
And people thought the first Sin Cara botched a lot! But at least Ziggy looked strong ahead of his match with Nakamura.

“The Fashion Files” > A+++
While I bemoaned the fact that Smackdown had become “The Land of the Jobbers” in the last Breakdown, I wish to point out that I always thought Fandango and Tyler Breeze deserved a lot better. Both were over big time in the past but were individually buried for the dumbest reasons. And this hilarious backstage sketch is proof that they could be legit Tag Team stars in WWE! Fun game if you plan to re-watch Smackdown. Try to name and reference every person photo that was the desk and wall behind Breeze! My favourite was the framed photo of Hall of Famer (and Hollywood Fashion Plate) “Classy” Freddie Blassie!

US Title Match: Chris Jericho vs Kevin Owens > A&F
You’ll never hear me complain about this match itself. It was a wonderful match. And the legitimately scary facial expressions of Jericho really sold the beatdown afterward. But for the life of me, I don’t get the finish! Yeah, Jericho is touring with Fozzy again soon, and they had to write him off TV. But why on earth would you do the payoff at Payback with Jericho winning the Title if he was just going to drop it to KO the next night?
It would have made a lot more sense to have the match end in a no contest and then have KO go nuts and take out Y2J!

I know people behind the scenes at WWE like Road Dogg bemoan the fact that fans complain about stuff like this. But whether they like it or not, it’s a legit criticism. It’s called inconsistent booking! And it’s something that happens WAY too often in WWE today.
Winner And NEW US Champion Kevin Owens

Overall Grade > B
Another week, and another exceedingly average Smackdown! No wonder TV Ratings for both brands went down this week when they booked so much filler before great main events. If I were a conspiracy theorist, I’d say WWE higher-ups were making both shows look average during the NBA/NHL playoffs. That way, when Roman Reigns returns they can claim the ratings boost they always get when playoffs are finished are due to him!
