Hello WNW People! Mitch “Big M” Adams here welcoming you to another edition of…The Smackdown Breakdown. Which is, of course, an opinion based review of Smackdown Live each week if you did not know that before! So without further ado, let’s get stuck into what happened on Smackdown Live this week, shall we?
In-Ring Promo: Bryan, Carmella & Ellsworth > B+
Daniel Bryan stole the show again in this segment, but only because Carmella spent the whole time whining and Ellsworth helped make him look like a million bucks after he got personal in the promo and DB responding in banning Ellsworth from the building. I will always be a huge Daniel Bryan fan, but having the Smackdown GM be the most over person on the roster is honestly starting to be a problem.
The Usos vs The Hype Bro’s > F
Can The Hype Bro’s please just go away? I’m sorry but Mojo’s screaming catchphrases in the ring and Zack desperately trying to stay relevant will never ensure a good match or segment. Usos phoned this one in, and who can blame them!
Winner’s: The Usos
Post-Match Shenanigans: New Day Promo > C
You all know I’m no fan of The New Day (the gimmick, not the mega talented individuals) but I admit they get the crowd pumped, and stretching PG to its breaking point jokes are always funny. But the idea of a rap battle between New Day and The Usos is something that honestly makes me shudder. I am not looking forward to writing about it next week!
Fashion Vice > A
Unlike most people, I haven’t enjoyed all of these Breezango segments (at least three of them were absolutely awful), but this one was thankfully one of the better ones. I especially liked the old school 4.3 picture format. Although, I think The Ascension may have stolen the segment quite frankly!
Women’s Championship Match: Naomi (c) vs Lana > F
This one had me scratching my head! Lana showed at MITB that she still needs more work in the ring, yes! WWE is doing her a disservice by making her do the archaic hot chick gimmick that they tried with Eva Marie and Emma before her, yes! (Why they keep beating that dead horse I will NEVER know.) But having her go under in less than two minutes is not going to help her improve in the ring nor will it get her over with the crowd. “Sigh” back to the drawing board!
Winner And Still Champion: Naomi
In-Ring Segment: English, Orton, Shane & Mahal > C
I felt kind of bad for English here but at the end of the day…the world needs jobbers! Orton showed a little of the passion that’s been missing as of late, but it still wasn’t enough to get me invested. Jinder Mahal coming out and saying that The Great Khali was his hero honestly made me laugh. WNW writers had a bit of fun with this in private as you can imagine.
“But I thought Jinder was Khali’s brother-in-law”
“Oh that’s right, we’re not supposed to remember that”
The announcement of the third Punjabi Prison match (as if two of them were not two too many already) was meant with a collective grown from Pro Wrestling fans everywhere I am sure. It’s sad that people behind the scenes of WWE are so intent on micromanaging every aspect of the product and are so devoid of original ideas that they have to keep beating dead horses! The company has never had such a diverse amount of raw talent at their disposal. And yet, they rather strap people like Jinder and book shit like this. It’s pathetic!
Backstage Segment: Bryan, Styles & KO > A
How disappointing is it that we never saw Styles vs Bryan in WWE? They clearly have incredible chemistry! I didn’t get AJ’s movie reference either as Will Ferrell's movies don’t do well internationally (his brand of comedy doesn’t translate well) so I was as clueless as KO was.
I like the idea of a Battle Royal next week to determine the next No.1 contender to the U.S. Title, but I hope John Cena will not be one of the participants. The outcome will be painfully too obvious otherwise!
Mike & Maria Kanellis Are Interrupted By Zyan > B+
This made me laugh my head off! But I’m not sure how smart it was to do a segment like this on Mike and Maria’s TV debut.
Baron Corbin vs Sami Zayn > A
A Super solid match in which both Corbin and Zayn looked like a million bucks. Corbin continues to grow by leaps and bounds every single week, and I have no doubt he will cash in the MITB contract by the end of the year! But I think he needs to stop fighting the inevitable and shave his head. Poor guy is losing his hair quicker than Punk lost his one and only fight in the UFC LOL.
Winner: Baron Corbin
Women’s Money In The Bank Ladder Match: Carmella, Natalya, Becky Lynch, Tamina, Charlotte > A+++
This is how they should have booked the first Women’s MITB match! Why on earth they went with that stupid, sexist finish at the PPV, I will NEVER understand! Every single woman in this match put it all on the line and completely stole the show. Even the Ellsworth run-in, this time around, was booked well to give the women a bit of girl posse type revenge (he must have learned how to sneak back into areas from Ambrose LOL). And to his credit, Ellsworth overselling his ladder spot was the right call on his part, and I’m sure gave everyone a chuckle. Even though I’m sure, like me, all men laughed through clutched crotches LOL!
I want to give a big shout out to Tamina in this match because she put on the best performance of her career in my opinion. Everyone involved had a great showing no doubt about it! But after missing so much time with injuries, and losing her father, I was very impressed with what she can do in the ring.
I always knew that they wouldn’t change the winner of the match, and that’s fine. Because as we all know, it wasn’t that part of the original match’s finish people quite rightly took issue with. Now that history has been reset; I’m looking forward to seeing what Carmella can do as the first Miss Money In The Bank!
Winner And Still Miss Money In The Bank: Carmella
Overall Grade > B+
Good show this week with a few gaping missteps. But that’s mostly the fault of poor long term booking. The main event is something that may possibly live on forever in my opinion.
