Happy Halloween wrestling fans! Halloween means a spooky theme to Smackdown and I can only imagine the frightful sights in store for us in this weeks edition. Those sights will include seeing the Wyatt Family open and close the show, will see a Trick or Treat Street Fight, and the main event is billed as a Face Your Fear match. I'm pretty sure there will be more spooktastic surprises in store during the show but they were all I was aware of.
If you haven't already heard it then please go check out part one of my two part interview with Lucha Underground star 'Mr. Athletic' Jeff Cobb, who I had the pleasure of recently talking to and recording a great interview with in which we talk about Jeff's early life, growing up in Hawaii, Lucha Underground, some of his favorite wrestling memories, and his WWE try out. To listen to that, plus many more great interviews please click here to head to my Soundcloud page.
Speaking of interviews for my podcast I have a HUGE guest coming up on Monday night that I'm going to be interviewing. He is a legend in WWE, and one of the most under appreciated performers of all time. I will be talking with 'El Matador' Tito Santana and I'm looking for YOUR help with some questions to ask him. If you have a question you want to ask Tito about anything at all then please leave your questions in the comments area below or e-mail them to me via firstname.lastname@example.org. I'm really excited to be interviewing Tito for the podcast on behalf of the site and look forward to releasing it the following week for you all to hear. I hope as many of you as possible can get involved and help to make this one of the best interviews possible.
Now let's head on into this weeks edition of the Smackdown Breakdown and see what went down.
Wyatt Family Opening Promo - 4 Stars
At the end of the Hell in a Cell main event on Sunday we saw the Wyatt Family attack the Undertaker, before they symbolically carried him out of the arena. Kane suffered the same treatment this past Monday on Raw, before he too was symbolically carried away by the Wyatt's. Where they were taken is anyone's guess but I'm sure we will see them back before Survivor Series. Bray claims he now owns the souls of both Undertaker and Kane, and tonight he put out an open challenge to any three members of the WWE roster to challenge his three monsters in Harper, Rowan and Strowman. I loved seeing Bray holding Kane's mask like some kind of trophy before passing it to Strowman. A pretty creepy opening to this weeks Smackdown.
Roman Reigns vs. Kevin Owens - 4 Stars
The reset button on the push of Roman Reigns appears to have been pushed as he won the right Monday night on Raw to face WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins for the title. Reigns had one hell of a battle on Sunday at Hell in a Cell too against Bray Wyatt, where he would emerge the victor. He showed no signs of any hurt though and he made his way to the ring through the crowd. Reigns cut a promo about how he was happy to finally get another chance to go after the championship. When that moment will happen is anyone's guess but we will see at some point in the near future. Before long out came Kevin Owens, who was one of the three losers in Monday night's main event to claim Reigns stole victory from him on Monday, before he mocked the fans and called Reigns' victory a fluke.
These two faced off in a match to determine whether or not Reigns' victory was a fluke or it was intentional. The stare down in the ring between these two before the bell even rang was intense, so after the bell rang this had the feeling of a big match. Neither man seemed to want to give the other an inch and the crowd were evidently split between the two. Roman showed some different offensive moves, showing he has come on so much as a competitor. Owens held his own against the big man though and this one was always going to be too close to call. Owens and Reigns would exchange near falls toward the end of the match but it was Reigns who would come out of this one the winner after a count out victory as Owens would leave after a Super Man Punch by Reigns that forced him out of the ring. A good match to kick off this weeks edition of Smackdown.
King Barrett & Sheamus vs. The Ascension vs. The Lucha Dragons vs. The Dudley Boyz - Tag Team Terror Four Corners Match - 3.5 Stars
The Dudley's came up short against New Day this past Sunday at Hell in a Cell. I really hope they Dudley's capture that elusive tenth Tag Team Championship they so desperately crave but it appears it may not be any time soon. I'm loving the new team of King Barrett and Sheamus who I believe can both go a long way together as a pair. I absolutely loved the New Day coming out with Unicorn horns on their heads and they were so hilarious to see and to hear on their way down the ramp. They came out to simply appear on commentary and keep an eye on the competition but they stole the show from the moment they came out.
This one had action all over the place when the Lucha Dragons were involved, while power would be on display when the other teams were in the ring. I spent more time listening to New Day on commentary and it was freaking hilarious to hear for the whole match. It was hard to pick a winner in this match at the early stages and as things drew to nearer the end of the match there was no separating the four teams. The action spilled outside the ring with the Dudley's and Barrett and Sheamus battling to the back, leaving the Lucha Dragons and Ascension to battle for the win. It was the Lucha Dragons who picked up the huge win and they now appear to have a future match against the New Day.
Dolph Ziggler vs. The Miz - Trick or Treat Street Fight - 4 Stars
This one saw the ringside area decorated in many different carved pumpkins, an apple bobbing bucket, and skeletons that could have been mistaken for Summer Rae...Except the skeletons had more talent. This match is usually always full of comedy spots, usually resulting in one of the pumpkins at ringside ending up on someone's head. It feels like it's been a while since we last saw Miz in singles action and it's a shame as I really rate him in the ring. Dolph continued his attempts to replicate Shawn Michaels as he skinned the cat, before he and Miz faced of in a kendo stick and lightsabre dual. Unfortunately for Miz the Kendo stick won. The action spilled outside and saw Miz bob for apples before having a pumpkin put on his head and super kicked off by Ziggler. That seemed to fire Miz up as he extracted revenge on Ziggler, attacking the knee of the show-off. It wasn't enough though as Ziggler would surprise Miz with a roll up victory.
That wasn't the end though as Tyler Breeze and Summer Rae would come down to the ring to further assault an already injured Ziggler. Dolph did his best to fight out of it but Breeze would end up dominating the show-off, making a statement that he appears to have Ziggler's number. A fun match to watch with a good ending to the segment to further the Ziggler and Breeze storyline.
Paige vs. Natalya - 3.5 Stars
So Paige turned on Charlotte and Becky Lynch...Again. I think we all saw this one coming, and while it was predictable I hope they don't start to constantly flip-flop with Paige's character. It was great to see Natalya back after two weeks out of action, although we still don't know who attacked her back stage recently. Right off the opening bell Paige took it to Natalya, making the Queen of Harts look like she was going to be easy work. Team B.A.D. emerged from the back just as Natalya got into the match, and I believe it may have been them who attacked Natalya recently. Their distraction proved to be enough for Paige to pick up a huge win, allowing Team B.A.D. to enter the ring after the match to annihilate Natalya in a brutal three on one assault. A good segment that maybe gives us a clue as to just who assaulted Natalya.
Alberto Del Rio vs. R-Truth - 3.5 Stars
So ALberto Del Rio shocked the wrestling world on Sunday night as he returned to WWE, answering the United States open challenge of John Cena at Hell in a Cell and defeating Cena to become the new United States Champion. It appears as if the United States Championship has now been replaced though with the newly name Mexamerican Championship, which Del Rio's new spokesman Zeb Colter proclaimed the title as. Having Zeb as Del Rio's mouthpiece is a stroke of genius and I think it's going to be a great pairing.
R-Truth was Del Rio's opponent in his first match back on Smackdown in well over a year and it didn't take long for the Mexamerican Champion to put his opponent away. This one didn't exactly last long as while R-Truth probably had the majority of the offence, it simply wasn't enough as Del Rio hit him with a nasty looking stomp from the top rope to end up the victor. A pretty quick and simple match that was a way of re-introducing Alberto Del Rio to action on Smackdown.
Dean Ambrose, Cesaro & Ryback vs. The Wyatt Family - Face The Fear Challenge - 4.5 Stars
So Ambrose, Cesaro and Ryback were brave enough to face their fear and accept the challenge laid out by Bray Wyatt at the start of the show. To their credit they showed no fear at all by going toe to tow with Bray Wyatt's followers, but their lack of fear wasn't enough to give them any kind of advantage as the Wyatt's took control of this one early on. Back form the break and the Wyatt's were still in control, making Ryback look like he was easy work. They would only keep that control until Ambrose came into the ring, as the Lunatic Fringe would get the hot tag and take out all anyone who got in his path. That domination would then continue as the Swiss Super Man Cesaro would come into the fold where he would dominate the Wyatt's too. The action spilled to the outside and descended into chaos by the end of the match, with members on each team taking one another out. It was the Wyatt Family who would pick up the win in this one after Cesaro was hit by Bray Wyatt, before tasting a discus clothesline from Luke Harper to leave the Wyatt Family stood tall to end Smackdown on a very creepy note.
Overall Show Rating - 3.75 Stars
This weeks edition of Smackdown was pretty solid. From the opening of the show with the Wyatt Family right through to the main event there were some great moments. I would be foolish not to mention the antics of Bo Dallas backstage, as they were hilarious. That being said I have to give my segment of the week to the main event of the show as all six men made it a great contest to watch. Without question the performances of Ambrose and Cesaro in this one were out of this world. They appeared to have raised their game in this one and showed why they should be more involved in the main event scene on a weekly basis.
That wraps it up for another edition of the Smackdown Breakdown. Please come back again next week for another edition.
