The Smackdown Breakdown - Roman Reigns On The Nations Parade

Welcome once again ladies and gentlemen to another edition of the Smackdown Breakdown. Normally I write a little bit about the week here but today is a super crazy busy day with my sons birthday and I'm meant to be recording three interviews today, although the one that was meant to be this morning seems to be a no show at this point. The big story that has developed over the last few days is the hiring by WWE of Mick Foley's son as part of the creative team. He is due to start in January but there seems to have been a bit of a backlash from fans following Mick's recent comments about creative and not wanting to watch anymore. Whether or not the comment's are connected it shouldn't greatly matter. I think it'll be interesting to see what Mick's son has to offer creatively to the company and I hope he can make a change for the better to WWE and it's product. There's obviously going to be pressure on him to do well but I believe he will make the right impact in time.

Quickly wanted to mention the release of part one of my two part interview with ICW ring announcer and podcast host Simon Cassidy. In part one we talked about all kinds of different topics including getting into the world of wrestling, being compared to Tony Chimel, the companies he announces for, training to be a wrestler, getting into the world of ring announcing, how he came to work for ICW, the advice Billy Kirkwood gave him on his first night, the success of ICW, Mark Dallas, working in front of different crowds, Tiny Simon, a great Ric Flair story, his former website Wrestle Shark, the podcast he used to host and more!

If you haven't heard the interview yet then you can check it out via my Soundcloud page where you can also hear my two part interview with New Age Kliq member Stevie Boy.

Now let's head on into this weeks edition of the Smackdown Breakdown and see what went down.

The Family, League Of Nations And New Day Segment - 3.5 Stars

Wow that opening segment lasted almost 20 minutes. I understand the need to open shows with a promo sometimes but did it need to go that long? Reigns stood in the ring with his 'family' in the Usos and I guess his blood brother, Dean Ambrose to deliver a message to Sheamus and the League of Nations, whom had their way with Reigns and his family on Raw this past Monday. Loved Sheamus talking about the green cards and how they were all legal to be there, nice bit of light relief in a segment that really felt like it was struggling. Thankfully just as I was about to lose the will to watch the New Day came out to at least add some comedic relief to the segment whilst dropping the bomb that Amrose and The Usos had to beat them in a tag match later in the show, otherwise Reigns would have to go up against the League of Nations on his own in the main event of the night. Without New Day this segment was a complete write off for me and they really saved it at the end for me.

Neville vs. Tyler Breeze - 3.5 Stars

Two former NXT stars faced off in a match observed by Dolph Ziggler on commentary. These two are incredibly exciting to watch so I expected them to put on a great effort. They didn't disappoint by putting on a well worked back and forth match. to showcase why both of them are great talents to keep an eye on for the future. They gave us a great mix of mat wrestling as well as some high flying and exciting stuff. Toward the end we saw several near falls but it was Tyler Breeze who would pick up the win in this one after some assistance from Summer Rae on the outside. Breeze continues to pick up steam and will no doubt continue his momentum in his feud with Dolph Ziggler. A good match between these two great talents.

Brie Bella vs. Becky Lynch - 4 Stars

After her controversial loss on Raw to Charlotte, we saw Becky Lynch back in action against Brie Bella in a Divas match that seems to hint there could be more to Charlotte's actions on Raw than meet the eye. Paige sewed the seeds but Charlotte appears to be adding water to let those seeds grow. Brie and Alicia Fox tried to stir the pot before the match but Becky was having none of it. As for the match I thought it was a good watch, with both Divas giving a good account of themselves. The finish saw Brie pick up the DQ win as Charlotte would attack Brie, just as Becky looked like she had the match won. I think this story is far from over and it seems possible Becky and Charlotte could very well be facing off in the near future.

New Day vs. Dean Ambrose and The Usos - 4 Stars

Was Big E making a snow angel in the ring? I love New Day. They are a breath of fresh air at a time when the product isn't at it's best. The stakes in this one were pretty high with Ambrose and The Usos needing to win to make sure Roman Reigns didn't have to go alone against all four members of the League of Nations in the main event. Ambrose and the Usos showed some great teamwork during this one, and New Day as always gave a solid display. For me the stand out performer in this one was Dean Ambrose, who really gave it his all while in the ring. Ambrose proved why he is a man who should be spending more time in the main event picture going forward. Just when it looked like Ambrose and the Usos might pick up the win in this one Jimmy Uso tweaked his knee following interference by Kofi Kingston to allow Xavier Woods to pick up the win for New Day. Looks like Roman Reigns is going at it alone in the elimination match main event. A solid and enjoyable match where everyone stepped up and did their bit.

Bray Wyatt vs. D-Von Dudley - 3.5 Stars

Wasn't it great to see Tommy Dreamer join the Dudley Boys on Monday night at Raw? Great to see the ECW family back together and united once again here on Smackdown. The R-Truth bit was a bit of comedic value before the Wyatt's made their way to the ring. I was a little surprised at the lack of ECW chants but maybe they were edited out. D-Von tried in this one but out of nowhere Bray nailed him with a Sister Abigail to pick up the win. Post-match it looked like D-Von may taste some wood, but Dreamer and Bubba came to his aid with Kendo sticks. It wasn't wnough though as the Wyatt's stood tall, with the segment ending with Rowan putting Dreamer through a table and leaving the lifeless bodies of the ECW Originals in the ring as the Wyatt's stood over them triumphantly.

Roman Reigns vs. The League Of Nations - 4 Stars

So tonight's main event saw a four on one handicap elimination match take place, where Roman Reigns surely wouldn't stand a chance of walking out the winner especially with Ambrose and the Usos being banned from ringside. The announcers played up the fact that Reigns practically had no chance, which led me to believe the outcome was going to see Reigns win. Sure enough the heels would do what was expected and would use their numbers advantage to gain the upper hand. Barrett was first to go after being thrown out for tripping Reigns by the referee, which seemed like a weird decision but there you go. Reigns would hang in there and would prove that he is indeed the invincible machine who can beat four men on his own, although the would never actually pin a single man and would instead win the match by getting Del Rio, Rusev and Sheamus all counted out. After the match ended the Usos and Ambrose saved Roman from a beating by the League. While many fans will roll their eyes at Reigns winning there isn't too much to complain about as he couldn't pin any of them to get the win. A good main event to end the show.

Overall Show Rating - 3.5 Stars

This weeks edition of Smackdown was a decent show. It wasn't perhaps as strong as the last few episodes have been but it still was acceptable and okay to watch. My segment of the week goes to the match between New Day and Ambrose and the Usos. I thought all six men involved gave it their all in this one and did a good job of making this a solid match to watch. Dean Ambrose really stood out of al the six men but each one did their part in making this a good match.

That wraps it up for another edition of the Smackdown Breakdown. Please come back again next week for another edition.
