The Smackdown Breakdown - So Long 2015 (Really This TIme)

Welcome once again fellow WNW readers to another edition of the Smackdown Breakdown. I thought last week was the final edition of Smackdown for 2015, but to my surprise WWE pulled another edition out of the bag to treat us on the final day of 2015. I'm looking forward to what happens with Smackdown in 2016 and it's evident from WWE booking John Cena for the first edition of the show that they want to kick things off with a bang. Raw this week was a great watch and I hope 2016 will be a great year for us as fans and for WWE as a company.

Now let's head on into this weeks edition of the Smackdown Breakdown and see what went down in what really was the final edition for 2015.

The Dudley Boyz & Kalisto vs. The New Day - 4 Stars

What a way to kick off your new years celebrations by having New Day come out and cut a promo. I'm also loving their new graphic on their entrance, it's awesome. New Day are going to get even bigger in 2016, I can feel that the only way is up for them. Plus I can record details of their awesomeness in my New Day journal! They wouldn't be celebrating new year for too long as the Lucha Dragon's came out, even Sin Cara in his sling, to challenge New Day to a match. The injury to Sin Cara on Raw this past Monday separating his shoulder looked painful and hopefully he won't be out too long. Of course with Sin Cara's injury Kalisto needed some back up. Cue the Dudley Boyz arriving with a New Years message on a table!

The Dudley's looked fired up during this one, taking control of the early proceedings. The two teams traded control throughout this one, with both teams putting on an entertaining affair. Kofi felt the force of a Kalisto head butt below the belt which seemed to fire up New Day, who then went after the arm of Kalisto to try and put him out of action too. New Day showed why they were the team to watch during 2015, while the Dudley's showed why they are one of the teams to watch since returning to WWE. Kalisto too showed why he is one to watch going forward with some great moves. The 3D to Big E was impressive given the big man's size which was then followed by Kalisto picking up the win for his team. It wasn't over though as Xavier Woods dined at a Table for One, suffering a powerbomb through the table to cap off the opening segment. A good match to start the show.

Tyler Breeze vs. Goldust - 3.5 Stars

It's always a pleasure to see Goldust in action. He's like a fine wine that matures with age; he only gets better. In this one he went up against a man to watch for 2016 in Tyler Breeze, accompanied to the ring by Summer Rae. Goldust showed his veteran side early on by showing Breeze a thing or two, before the King of Cuteville would take over and slowly but surely pick Goldust apart. I was impressed by both men in this one, but ultimately it was Tyler who picked up the win over the veteran after using his feet on the ropes to steal a victory. After the match was over Breeze and Summer announced they would be going their separate ways....But honestly, does anyone really care? The partnership hasn't really worked out for Tyler's benefit, but there's a niggling feeling in my mind that they aren't being honest and this is some kind of ploy. Time will tell but if it isn't a ploy then I can't say I'm disappointed.

Braun Strowman & Luke Harper vs. The Usos - 3.5 Stars

Two of the monsters of the Wyatt Family took on the high flying Tag Team of the Year in The Uso's. These teams have had some great matches during 2015 and I expect 2016 to be no different. From the opening bell these two teams traded back and forth blows, before the Wyatt's took control over their much smaller opponents. With the extra man in Erick Rowan on the outside it always felt inevitable that the numbers advantage would come into play during this one and it would toward the end of the match. Just as it looked like The Uso's might have been able to pick up the victory Rowan provided a distraction which allowed Strowman to lock in that big bear hug for the win. A good match between these two. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do in 2016.

Brie Bella & Alicia Fox vs. Naomi & Tamina Snuka - 3 Stars

It was the power and strength of Tamina and Naomi taking on the speed and skill of Brie Bella and Alicia Fox in this one. To my surprise it was Brie and Alicia who took control of the match from the early stages. That wouldn't last too long though as Tamina would soon use her strength to slowly dissect Alicia. Naomi came in but wasn't able to prevent the tag to Brie, who quickly used her speed to take control for her team. Brie would pick up the win in the end for her team in a match that felt very much thrown together and didn't have a mass amount of anything to it for me.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Bo Dallas - 3.5 Stars

Bo walking around backstage earlier in the night was kind of entertaining, doing what he does best in annoying anyone and everyone in sight. He needed to Bo-Lieve in this one against the man who likes to steal the show on a nightly basis in Dolph Ziggler. Maybe some New Years Revolutions (yes that's what Bo kept calling them) are needed for Bo, with the first one maybe being getting back to winning ways during 2016. Dolph did his usual display of looking like he wasn't going to win followed by a fired up come back, before he picked up the win over Bo with a Super Kick out of nowhere. An okay match but nothing special to write home about. Hopefully Ziggler will get more of a push in 2016 but he's going to have to do something more to show why he deserves to be there.

Roman Reigns & Dean Ambrose vs. Sheamus & Kevin Owens - 4 Stars

Who'd have thought we'd be seeing Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns close out 2015 as the Intercontinental and WWE World Heavyweight Champions respectively. I'm glad these two are getting the opportunity they deserve and I hope in 2016 Reigns and Ambrose both have great 2016's. Likewise I hope Kevin Owens will get the main event chance he deserves, as he really is a star to watch. I liked the way Owens was a feature throughout the night on Raw, being used in the right way and making it to the point you didn't know when he would pop up next.

I expected this match was going to be a cracker to end Smackdown for 2015 and end the shows run on SyFy, and these four men did not disappoint. These four men gave us a brawl that could have probably gone all over the arena. I was impressed by Reigns showing us some offence we hadn't seen him do before, while Ambrose brought his fast paced, dare devil style to add some excitement. Owens and Sheamus both gave a solid showing of themselves in this one too, but all the talk in this one has to be about Ambrose and Reigns, who simply did not want to let up on their opponents when they were in charge. Owens and Sheamus deserve credit for their work too, showing why they are both incredible talents who probably deserved more opportunities in 2015 than they got. Reigns and Ambrose would pick up the win, albeit via disqualification after Owens crotched Reigns on the ringpost. That wouldn't be how the night ended though as Owens and Sheamus would soften up Reigns ahead of his big title defence on Monday against Sheamus. Just as it looked like Ambrose was about to be put through the announce table in front of Reigns, big Roman managed to deliver a Superman Punch to Owens and a Spear to Sheamus to leave the champions stood tall on the announce table, their title held high to end 2015.

Overall Show Rating - 3.5 Stars

This weeks edition of Smackdown was an okay watch. While it wasn't on a similar level to this weeks edition of Raw I thought we saw a strong start and end to the show. My favourite segment this week goes to the opening six man tag team match between New Day, Kalisto and The Dudley Boyz. I thought all six men gave us a great match and showed why they all are going to be worth keeping an eye on during 2016.

That wraps it up for another edition of the Smackdown Breakdown. Please come back again in January 2016 for another edition. If you have any comments about this weeks Breakdown or Smackdown itself then please leave your comments in the discussion area below. Thanks for reading and I will catch you back here again next week.
