WWE Extreme Rules 2015

Welcome to WNW’s Extreme Rules 2016 Predictions! Extreme Rules will be emanating from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. This time around, we have myself, Big M, Zeppelin Mayers, and Morgan Hench providing full predicts, while Jesse-Elizabeth is doing quick picks. Let’s get to it!

Kickoff No Disqualification Match

Dolph Ziggler vs. Baron Corbin

CJ:

Kind of like how WWE treated the U.S. Title match at Payback, there really isn't a major story here but WWE is making it appear that way. Ziggler, for whatever dumb reason, went over Baron Corbin on the Payback Kickoff. Since then, Corbin beat Ziggler on Raw and a random No DQ match has been booked. With Apollo Crews not being featured, I guess I can't complain about WWE trying to keep Corbin relevant. In order to keep the relevance, though, Corbin has to beat Dolph.

CJ's Predicted Winner: Baron Corbin

Big M:

“Sigh” Another pre-show match not worth getting excited about. I truly don’t know why Dolph went over Baron last month at Payback. But I fully expect him to go under on Sunday. Baron has a lot of talent and his gimmick in NXT of going after Internet Darlings would probably play off even better on the main roster.

Big M's Predicted Winner: Baron Corbin

Zeppelin:

This is going to be a Kickoff feud. The two are going to go one more time after this before they move on, and Corbin needs a win. The match plays towards Corbin's strengths and can highlight his ruthless nature. Should be a solid starter to the show that finally showcases Corbin as the beast he needs to be.

Zeppelin's Predicted Winner: Baron Corbin

Morgan:

This feud...exists. I'm not particularly excited for it, but it shouldn't be bad, per se. It's just there. Which I guess makes it a good Kick Off match. It would make sense for Corbin to win this time, though I thought it would make sense for him to win last match too, so.... I'm hoping it isn't a squash, since the No DQ stipulation benefits the both of them. Corbin for his size advantage, and Ziggler for his wits and creativity. Hopefully this'll be pretty fun.

Morgan's Predicted Winner: Baron Corbin

Jesse-Elizabeth's Predicted Winner: Baron Corbin

Tornado Tag Team Match

The Usos vs. Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson

CJ:

It seemed inevitable that we would see The Usos vs. Gallows & Anderson in some kind of stipulation match at Extreme Rules. With the continued use of chairs, I started to worry this would be some kind of Chairs Match. Luckily, we are seeing a tag team war. And hopefully, it's the last... These teams work well together and are more than capable of putting on a show-stealer here. I don't have to say much besides Anderson and Gallows need this win.

CJ's Predicted Winners: Gallows & Anderson

Big M:

If I was feeling cynical I would say WWE singed Gallows and Anderson only to bury them. I mean nothing against the Usos, great talents both of them but the only reason they’ve been getting the better of Gallows and Anderson the last few weeks is because WWE’s higher ups are worried that if they went under they’ll make Roman Reigns look week by association. Which is ridiculous, but it’s typical WWE Logic. WWE’s Higher ups are squandering a MASSIVE opportunity here with with Gallows, Anderson, I mean “The Club”…seriously WWE I know you couldn’t get the trademark but is that seriously the best you could come up with “Yikes.” It makes no sense whatsoever to put The Usos over here and help further to bury what could potentially be the beginning of this Generations NWO from bringing this industry to new heights…but that's most likely exactly what their planing to do sadly.

Big M's Predicted Winners: The Usos

Zeppelin:

The outcome of this match won’t have any impact on the main event of the feud as a whole. The only thing this will accomplish is making The Club look strong. The Usos don’t need any momentum, but Anderson & Gallows will, especially if Roman wins.

Zeppelin's Predicted Winners: Gallows & Anderson

Morgan:

This match is surprisingly underwhelming. The Bulletless Club hasn't completely revolutionized the WWE Tag Team division from the word go, and you'd be hard pressed to find people interested in the Usos anymore. A win would really help The Club here, while The Usos don't really need a win right now. It's safe to assume the winner here will likely try to lay claim to being the Number 1 Contender for the Tag Team titles, which would also benefit The Club more. It would just overall make more sense for The Club to win this one. Hoping for a pretty good match, at least.

Morgan's Predicted Winners: Gallows & Anderson

Jesse-Elizabeth's Predicted Winners: Gallows & Anderson

United States Championship Match

Kalisto (c) vs. Rusev

CJ:

I can appreciate the writers finally creating a decent feud for Kalisto as United States Champion. Rusev wouldn't have been my ideal choice but I assume there could be a bigger picture. The only thing I haven't liked is WWE booking Kalisto up against bigger opponents. (I know practically everyone will be bigger than Kalisto, but I think you can figure out what I mean.) With Cena returning in just over a week, one has to wonder if Rusev could pick up the title on Sunday... My fingers are crossed still that Kalisto keeps his reign going.

CJ's Predicted Winner: Kalisto

Big M:

I have mixed feelings about this one. On one hand Rusev looks to have finally recovered from his program with Cena and the heat he shared with Lana over breaking kayfabe and announcing their engagement mid-storyline. And on the other I’m disappointed WWE has done little with Kalisto and the U.S. Title, especially considering what a great talent he is. Kalisto most definitely deserves more that WWE creative is giving him. So honestly for me its a “pick em” between two workers WWE’s higher ups have wrongly soured on. But if you were to put a gun to my head and demanded I pick a winner…I’m going to go with Rusev.

Big M's Predicted Winner: Rusev

Zeppelin:

Let me just say, I love Kalisto as champion, I just think creative dropped the ball with it. I do see Kalisto being the next Rey Mysterio in most ways, and a few solid runs with the mid-card titles is a great way to establish him, but his entire reign has been regulated to lazy booking and the kickoff show on pay per view. This means we are due for some change, and since Rusev is now by himself, I feel that a triple threat between the former League of Nations members over the title is coming soon.

Zeppelin's Predicted Winner: Rusev

Morgan:

So instead of Kalisto versus Ryback, we get Kalisto versus more talented Bulgarian Ryback. Cool. I'm going with Rusev here. With Cena due back soon, I see the heel champion taking on the returning Cena in what promises to be a hopelessly uneventful retelling of their feud last year. Kalisto really hasn't done anything with the title anyway, and I've been calling for him to lose it for months now. Don't really intend to stop. I don't even blame Kalisto for his US Title run being a bust, but I think it's time to hit eject and move on to the next guy.

Morgan's Predicted Winner: Rusev

Jesse-Elizabeth's Predicted Winner: Rusev

Tag Team Championship Match

The New Day (c) vs. The Vaudevillains

CJ:

All I can think while writing this is how scared I was for Enzo Amore during Payback. Luckily, it was just a concussion and he will be back soon. I still believe The Vaudevillains would've won the number one contenders match and would've earned this title match the right way. As for the storyline... it's not my favorite. It may be possible that babyface New Day just doesn't work like they did as heels. I still find them funny, but something doesn't feel right. Perhaps change is what we need. And by that, I mean new Tag Team Champions. The tag division is filling up and I believe it's time for new faces for that division.

CJ's Predicted Winners: The Vaudevillains

Big M:

Ok people who read my comments on WNW open threads know I’m not a big fan of The New Day (The gimmick, not the individuals) so it's no secret who I want to win this match. But unfortunately The Vaudvillains (While over with NXT’s Audience) have fallen flat with the main show audience. Meanwhile, The New Day are as popular as ever (I still can’t understand WHY though). I fully expect The New Day to go over here.

Big M's Predicted Winners: The New Day

Zeppelin:

This was a tough choice. The big question is whether WWE wants New Day to hold the titles till SummerSlam, totalling around a year as champs. If they do, then Enzo & Big Cass will be the team to topple the unstoppable champs. If not, then Vaudevillains will secure the win and be regulated to transitional champions. In my mind, Enzo & Big Cass are the end goal. Strap them with the belts and carry the tag division through the rest of the year, but if Vaudevillains don’t win then the team will become the next failed NXT talent. To give them a fighting chance on the roster they need a win now, not just to be champions, but to be the team that unseated one of the greatest teams of this era.

Zeppelin's Predicted Winners: The Vaudevillains

Morgan:

Anyone else getting an 80's vibe from this feud? This just seems like 80's wrestling to me. Bright colorful characters, clear cut alignments, gimmick heavy characters, all that stuff. I'm not complaining, it's just an observation. I don't see Vaudevillains taking the titles away from The New Day. They aren't quite established yet, and New Day has been holding the titles with enough presence that beating them should go to someone clearly designed to be a long-term title contender. I'm not entirely sure we'll have Vaudevillains as contenders for the title for very long, and I'm worried they'll get mixed into the shuffle. So for now, I'm going with New Day. I just hope Gotch and English don't drop all the way down the card after this feud.

Morgan's Predicted Winners: The New Day

Jesse-Elizabeth's Predicted Winners: The New Day

Fatal 4-Way Intercontinental Championship

The Miz (c) vs. Cesaro vs. Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn

CJ:

Combining Miz vs. Cesaro and Owens vs. Zayn never really crossed my mind before Payback, but I was pleasantly surprised with the booking. In my opinion, this makes the title look important and creates a must-see fatal four-way match that could very well steal the show. I'll come right out and state that I still want to see Cesaro walk away with the Intercontinental Title in his possession. In this situation, it's hard to see The Miz retaining, but he did it at Night of Champions 2012. I think Kevin Owens should win Money in the Bank or at least begin a true pursuit towards the WWE Title. Like WrestleMania, this is an opportunity for Sami Zayn to win the title, but he'll have plenty of chances down the road. Cesaro is on fire and WWE needs to capitalize on it as we head in to the summer.

CJ's Predicted Winner: Cesaro

Big M:

I am so bloody pumped for this match!!! Kevin Owens, Cesaro and Sami Zayn in the same ring tearing the house down, Oh and uh The Miz will be there too…"Cough." I’ve been saying for years that the WWE Intercontinental Championship needed to be re-built to being the No. 2 Championship in the industry (Like it used to be) and it appears that FINALLY WWE’s higher ups feel the same way. Incredible matches like these are precisely whats needed to help make it happen…BUT what is also needed is someone to hold the Title for a decent length (6 months at least) to make the Title look more prestigious. So sadly since Miz has only held the Title for 2 months I’m guessing he will go over in this one. But hey if the Miz having a long reign as IC Champ means the Title regains its former glory and prestige, I’m willing to go with it.

Big M's Predicted Winner: The Miz

Zeppelin:

Like all my predictions, I am viewing Extreme Rules as a platform to set the stage for big battles at SummerSlam. As of now I think the guy to build around with the Intercontinental Championship is Sami Zayn. That doesn’t mean he will win here though. I think Sami will win at SummerSlam. Kevin Owens won’t win because his path should take him to better things like winning Money In The Bank. As for The Miz, I think he is great, but there are too many qualified superstars in the mix for him to be champion right now. This leaves Cesaro. A man who had just returned, can carry the upper mid-card until he has an opening for better things, and already has a history with Sami. The two would be great at SummerSlam, and this leaves Cesaro time to work on his character before getting pushed next year. The Miz is a transitional champion, and that time for transition is now to the Swiss Superman.

Zeppelin's Predicted Winner: Cesaro

Morgan:

Fun fact, Kevin Owens will be only the second Superstar on the roster to have wrestled every single held PPV within his first year. First was The Undertaker, and there were notably fewer PPVs back then. Third will be Charlotte, if she wrestles MITB. Now, onto the match! Possible match of the night, and I feel confident all the participants will bring their A-Game. This one's a little hard to call, actually. I think Owens VS Zayn will be a months long feud, but I can't say for sure if adding the title would elevate it or just exist as something else for the two to feud over. And where would it leave Cesaro and Miz? I dunno, I think the winner will either be Cesaro or Miz, and the other will challenge for the title at MITB. Unless Cesaro loses here, wins the MITB, and goes on to be a main event superstar! But I'm fantasy booking again. I'll just go with Cesaro, because I like his suit.

Morgan's Predicted Winner: Cesaro

Jesse-Elizabeth's Predicted Winner: Kevin Owens

Women's Championship Submission Match

Charlotte (c) vs. Natalya

CJ:

When was the last time a women's match at Extreme Rules received a stipulation? These two always have good matches together and that will continue in this submission showcase. The assumption still is that Sasha Banks will receive her career-defining moment at SummerSlam. Like I said before Payback, there's still plenty of time to let Natalya win the title and have a short reign if necessary. It's something I've wanted to see since I started watching wrestling and I refuse to give up on that hope.

CJ's Predicted Winner: Natalya

Big M:

If you’ve read my latest article here on WNW you will know I have a few issues with the way the Women’s Division is being booked (WHERE IS SAHSA?, WHERE IS PAIGE?) But this match is not something to sneeze at. These two Women have had incredible matches before in the past in NXT and Roadblock. The match they had last week was a travesty and (even though he signed off on it) a bit of a slap to the face of Natalya’s uncle Bret Hart. However it was obviously done to set up this submission match, so I think maybe I can look past all that. I don’t know if there has ever been a Women’s Submission match in WWE before, but its something I have never seen, and its something I definitely Want to see. As for picking a winner…Well as usual I’m afraid I must go with Charlotte as its obvious WWE’s higher ups like her as the face of the Women’s division.
And I don’t see that changing anytime soon sadly.

Big M's Predicted Winner: Charlotte

Zeppelin:

We all know Natalya isn’t going to win. They are clearly waiting till SummerSlam for Sasha to take the title, and everything till then is just filler. Hopefully, this feud’s end leads to the end of Flair constantly undermining Charlotte’s talent by being the pinwheel in her victories

Zeppelin's Predicted Winner: Charlotte

Morgan:

Charlotte is under the curse of "Heel's can't be evil AND win clean! They have to be spineless and only have the title because of interference!" I miss Kurt Angle, he was heel and won because he was the best. With the amount of Ric Flair stipulations, I can't do anything but expect shenanigans. I honestly feel a little teased that WWE is essentially stating "Look! Charlotte versus Natalya for the Women's title in a submission match! And no Ric Flair!" Personal vexations aside, Charlotte's still my pick to win. I keep hearing Charlotte VS Sasha Banks for the title at SummerSlam, and I think that sounds about right. I just don't see Nattie holding the title any time in the immediate future.

Morgan's Predicted Winner: Charlotte

Jesse-Elizabeth's Predicted Winner: Charlotte

Asylum Match

Dean Ambrose vs. Chris Jericho

CJ:

I wasn't thrilled to see their first match a few weeks ago, but I've slowly gained interest and the stipulation that has been selected has definitely captured me. It's a genius idea and should keep everyone glued to the TV come Sunday. I have no doubt that Ambrose and Jericho will be the hell out of each other. In the end, even though he won at Payback, I still think Ambrose should win to keep him relevant. Jericho has proven he can bounce back quickly. Expect the Lunatic Fringe to be successful in his home.

CJ's Predicted Winner: Dean Ambrose

Big M:

To quote a recent post by Mick Foley on Facebook “Could this Asylum Match at Extreme Rules be exactly what Dean Ambrose needs? Experience has taught me that a big break is often a series of smaller breaks - like a ball peen hammer tapping away at that glass ceiling everyone talks about…until finally, it shatters." I sure hope Mick is right about this because as I’ve said before Dean Ambrose is the best all round worker in WWE today, and In my opinion was always the standout of the Shield. It truly does boggle my mind how a talent like Dean who has such an fun move set, can work an incredible match every night, can cut one entertaining promo after another and has a gimmick that WWE creative could do literally ANYTHING with (If they tried) hasn’t been WWE World Champion yet. I hope with all the trouble they are having getting their pick of Current Champion over with the fans that they have finally started to see Ambrose as a viable alternative. Why else would they give him his own gimmick match if they weren’t going to push him? Expect hardcore chaos and hopefully a Dean Ambrose win, with a future main event push hopefully to follow.

Big M's Predicted Winner: Dean Ambrose

Zeppelin:

I am intrigued by this match only for the gimmick attached to it. Hopefully, this is the end of the feud and the only way to end it is with Ambrose getting the victory. We don’t need a rubber match scenario. Ambrose needs a victory so he can move on to other things, such as Shield vs. The Club. Jericho doesn’t have anything to gain with a win, and his current run should be coming to an end. What better way to go out than in an Asylum.

Zeppelin's Predicted Winner: Dean Ambrose

Morgan:

So, let me get this straight. It's a cage match...but escaping isn't the point. I'm guessing they just didn't want to overuse the Hell in the Cell match type, so they came up with this thing. I hate when cage matches end via pinfall or submission, so I'm already grouchy to this match. The complete lack of interest in this storyline doesn't help. They're literally fighting over a talk show and a plant. That's the blood feud that needs a cage coated in weapons. Considering Dean tends to get neutered when he wants to play with weapons, I'm not even expecting this to be all that noteworthy. Hopefully Ambrose will just win and we can move on to...anything else, really.

Morgan's Predicted Winner: Dean Ambrose

Jesse-Elizabeth's Predicted Winner: Dean Ambrose

Extreme Rules WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match

Roman Reigns (c) vs. AJ Styles

CJ:

My favorite storyline on TV has to be this one. AJ Styles is one of my favorites and pairing him with Roman has provided fans with a reason to care. We've seen all-out wars between The Family and The Club. I expect there to be interference in this bout like we saw at Payback. The action will be all over the place and I think we'll be happy whether AJ walks out champion or not. I still have this feeling that Reigns isn't dropping the title soon because of Finn Balor and/or Seth Rollins.

CJ's Predicted Winner: Roman Reigns

Big M:

Ok I’m just going to come out and say it…I just don’t think Roman Reigns as a Babyface Champion and potential Cena successor has worked…at all. Not that its his fault obviously, his Push has been botched by terrible booking from the very start.
And his recent booking of not only him but his cousins the Uso’s going over AJ Styles and “The Club” is such dominating Super-Cena like fashion was never going to endure him to the IWC. But honestly I don’t just think its just the IWC that have flat out said to WWE “No we don’t want him." I mean TV ratings are down more than usual and the last few Raw’s have seen significant parts of hosting arenas tarped off to hide empty seats from the cameras. Plus there are rumors currently swirling all around the internet that Vince McMahon is starting to lose faith in Roman Reigns as the next big Babyface star. So does that mean AJ is going to go over at Extreme Rules and be the new WWE World Champion…Nope, not even close.

Vince McMahon and the rest of WWE’s higher ups are far too stubborn to call it a day on Roman’s push just yet.
Besides there is no chance that Vince will let a “TNA Guy” or “New Japan Guy” like AJ hold his World Title, No matter how popular he is. Even if it squanders an opportunity to recreate the magic New Japan had (And still has) with the Bullet Club (or just The Club since WWE couldn’t get the trademark) chances are it won’t happen. Ok maybe if Finn Balor debuts and costs Roman the match and he, AJ, Gallows and Anderson form the “Balor Club,” I could see that being a slim possibility, but since Finn will be facing Samoa Joe in a cage match at the next NXT Takeover I’m not getting my hopes up. Roman will win this one and be booed out of another arena.

Big M's Predicted Winner: Roman Reigns

Zeppelin:

This match is a little difficult to call, because this match is all leading to what I believe (as well as many others) to be the rumored Shield vs. Club feud. So the question is more about how WWE is going to further that plot. As of right now, it seems they are leaning towards Styles embracing his aggressive nature and the mentality of Gallows and Anderson. This should lead to a screwy finish with Reigns escaping with the title. Also, Reigns hasn’t been the champion for very long, he needs a decent title run for his third reign at least. All of this leads me to believe that Roman Reigns will retain, at least one more time.

Zeppelin's Predicted Winner: Roman Reigns

Morgan:

Their last match blew away expectations, so the bar is naturally a bit higher here. I've given up on Balor watch for right now, so I'm not expecting any big surprises here. Still, this should be a good match! Love the understandable gray and grey going on with the feud too. I think they'll face off one more time at MITB, but I'm not positive on that. After that, they'll probably move on to something else. I don't think AJ has a real chance, but the match should be fun to sit through. Still, I feel like I'll be typing "Roman Reigns will win" a lot, and I'm not looking forward to that. Not even out of hate for the guy, just the disinterest in predictability. But that's a future problem, right now is a fun match that will likely end with Roman Reigns coming out on top.

Morgan's Predicted Winner: Roman Reigns

Jesse-Elizabeth's Predicted Winner: Roman Reigns
