Coming of the back of what was a stale and predictable Elimination Chamber, heading into what appears to be an awful Fastlane. Is WWE losing its touch? It seems almost harder to lose the hype for Wrestlemania with how much of a colossal event it is, but WWE seems to have been able to do that through (overly) predictable booking.
This puts WWE in a catch 22 situation, because if they decide to vary from the predictable path that they are on then they could find themselves losing out on the best match WWE probably has to offer at the moment with AJ Styles v Shinsuke Nakamura. If the Fatal-Five way at Fastlane doesn’t see Styles leaving with the title then literally the fans truly have nothing to look forward to, but if the outcome stays as AJ then what is the point in watching Fast Lane?
WWE need to work on the system for the lead up to Wrestlemania to make the spectacle the “biggest event in sports entertainment” like it claims to be. The latest rumor to be coming out is that Braun Strowman will be added to the main event which means we will be having another Brock Lesnar triple threat (haven’t seen that before?). So with that, we have as it stands AJ Styles v Shinsuke Nakamura, Brock Lesnar v Roman Reigns (potentially v Braun Strowman) and Asuka v ? Champion. Now with what happened on RAW, there is a match that is everything but official in Kurt Angle & Ronda Rousey v Triple H & Stephanie Mcmahon.
Bar the one match that is subject to change for the WWE Championship – none of these matches seem even remotely interesting or Wrestlemania Calibre. Brock Lesnar v Braun one on one would be better than the current Reigns v Lesnar and what was the point in the finish to the Royal Rumble if Rousey has nothing to do with either of the championship matches?
Everything coming from the WWE seems convoluted and winged, and the shoddy booking is leading to the least anticipated Wrestlemania I can remember. The worst thing about it all is that the talent pool is there to make this probably one of the best – but instead of doing that the WWE Universe is given the same old matches to pay a ridiculous PPV fee for unless they have the WWE Network.
What can be expected are throw away matches and battle royals to fill the time slots with nothing out of the ordinary happening in any of the matches that will leave a lasting effect like say a Seth Rollins cash in to close the show which genuinely might be one of the best ‘Mania moments ever. This time instead witness Roman beating the unconquerable odds stacked against him which is fantastic because that is so fresh and a true underdog like Roman Reigns deserves these kind of stories.
What’s missing? There will be Tag Team title matches, Intercontinental and United States title matches and one more Women’s championship match. Is there any feuds outside of this that could take center stage at the show? Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens, maybe? This again is such a fresh and unique concept. Then maybe just maybe we have Bayley v Sasha Banks which genuinely could be great if booked correctly, but with how everything else has gone things do not bode well for the pair.
This years “biggest” Pay-Per-View seems to be a throwaway one, which unless you are actually at the event you may as well not tune in for because you will not see nothing fresh or exciting. What can be done to save the event? Bar scrap the plans already put in place entirely, no one has the answers for this. For the sake of the fans, pray that this turns out differently to how it seems to be going as of right now.
If you agree or disagree with me let me know @WNW_Walker I would love to discuss this with you and get your feedback on what you think of this year’s Wrestlemania. If you could also book one match for the show which you think would make it great based on the current roster, what would you pick and why?
