Concern For John Cena, Heel Turn On Raw, Devalued Titles, Abandoning Upstarts

What do you think about John Cena's workload following his very physical match against Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam?

John Cena has now had four matches since working Brock Lesnar in the main event at SummerSlam a couple weeks ago. Three were live event Street Fights against Kane and then Bray Wyatt on this week's episode of Raw. While these matches were shorter, I think it's concerning. Cena was off TV last week to sell the beating and then right back at it on the weekend loop. What's equally as troubling is the way he was booked at Raw. It's like WWE panicked and decided to rebuild Cena all in one week, at the risk of hurting Bray Wyatt. There is plenty of time to re-build Cena as to having a shot at Night of Champions but the way he was booked on Raw was rushed. Cena is healthy after the beating he took at SummerSlam but it's safe to say WWE is currently riding him hard.

What did you think of the Goldust and Stardust heel turn on this week's Raw?

It was needed to elevate the program against WWE Tag Team Champions The Usos. Regardless of what was planned, Cody Rhodes' ability to get over as Stardust has prolonged his role and rejuvenated interest in the Rhodes Brothers. While all this is great in the short-term, one must wonder if Cody Rhodes will ever surpass mid-card booking. He's always done everything asked of him but many considered him to be destined for the top of the card at one point.

Can you make the argument that none of the secondary titles hold any value currently?

Last week's episode of Raw saw losses from the WWE Tag Team Champions, the Divas Champion and Intercontinental Champion. One show, three losses from "champions." I hate that type of booking and while I understand why it was done, I like making titles mean something. Given Brock Lesnar's part-time status and the fact the WWE World Heavyweight Championship will not be routinely spotlighted, I believe now is as good of a time as ever to rebuild some of the secondary belts. However, I didn't see much on this week's Raw to indicate that's what WWE is doing. An underwhelming encounter between Cesaro and Sheamus (US title), Paige getting the win but Natalya KOing her (Divas title), another loss from The Usos (albeit a count out, WWE Tag Team Champions) and Dolph Ziggler getting a quick win against Damien Sandow.

Has WWE given up on Bo Dallas?

WWE hasn't given up on Bo Dallas as he had the segment with Jack Swagger on this week's Raw and a quick win over Kofi Kingston. He clearly took a backseat to the SummerSlam build but it's not over yet. Adam Rose is another worker people keep asking about but he continues to win, albeit on the secondary shows (beating Curtis Axel in a match taped for this week's WWE Superstars on Monday night). I believe both no longer have as much interest as they once did but neither have been abandoned yet.

From the Ask WNW vault…

April 2012: You mentioned that you found it ironic that Brock Lesnar was working with John Cena because in the past Lesnar didn’t like Cena. Why? - I do not know the specific reason Brock Lesnar didn’t like Cena but it’s clear in many circles they didn’t get along. Lesnar was a main event talent while Cena was still “coming up” and I don’t know if Lesnar saw Cena as a threat or just didn’t like him personally. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out but it’s very different now as Cena is the face of WWE and no one is going to push him around.

Questions that are legible stand the best chance of getting answered. The next installment of Ask WNW is scheduled to run on Wednesday, August 27, 2014.

Again, Richard Gray, does Low Ki still regard LayCool well and likewise for them feeling the same about him?

    • Low Ki works for TNA, Layla works for WWE and Michelle McCool is retired.

      • Uzoma Iwuagwu

I know that. I just want to know if they’re still be in good terms, that’s all. I know that LayCool are naturally but I want to know if they feel the same about Low Ki and likewise for him towards them.

        • Deus Legend

Why do you ask this same question on every Ask WNW?

          • Uzoma Iwuagwu

Just very curious because I read on interviews that Low Ki, contrary to how most thought, admit that he enjoyed his time with LayCool when he was in WWE and had no issues towards them. As of this year, I haven’t heard on if he still feels that way and if they feel the same towards him, too. This is also because while I don’t mind Low Ki returning to TNA and wrestling elsewhere such as New Japan Pro Wrestling, I just can’t get over how his time in the WWE went out based on not getting a chance to succeed there and seeing LayCool either for reunions or on their separate lives (with McCool being the wife of The Undertaker and Layla continuing being a WWE Diva), it has me reminding of when they were his Pros on NXT Season 2, which he would win.

          • Deus Legend

Who cares honestly LMAO. Thats why no one answers…

          • Uzoma Iwuagwu

Yeah, you’re right. What was I thinking constantly asking Richard Gray and anybody on the comment box when I should just ask either one of them myself to get an answer. I won’t ask about that on the comment box again.

        • TheBigKing1

Stop asking stupid questions…especially to Richard.

          • Uzoma Iwuagwu

I’ll stop asking that on the comment box and to Richard.

          • Robert Olley

Why do you keep asking it though? It was years ago and theyw ere only on tv together for a few months i’m sure low ki has never been in touch with them since

Cena sucks, I repeat that letting Cena beat Lesnar ever again will be the beginning of the end for WWE…

    • That’s a little melodramatic. One person can’t really make or break the WWE. Just listen to CM Punk’s infamous promo of 3 years ago. Cena is just a spoke on the wheel, albeit it, an important one.

      • Gary Robert

wiser words have never been spoken

    • LeBron James

Oh you’re cool now because you said “Cena sucks”. I’ve never heard that before.

  • David F

dust 2 dust will still get cheered and makes sense they attacked Usos. Usos did classic fake knee injury like HBK did to Batista in order not to lose plus Usos acted heelish the week before. Should be interesting tag match at NOC. Bo needs new finisher if he cant even hit his

Cody Rhodes has the in ring ability and all the physical and familial attributes necessary to be a main event player, but until he figures out whatever it is he needs to figure out to get himself over on the mic (not today’s generic “I want to seem cool and disaffected” persona), he’s stuck at upper midcard level. They already have a Randy Orton.

  • Rachel Miller

I heard rumors that Vince McMahon is loving the Stardust character as of late. Before the transformation, WWE Management felt that Cody Rhodes was very boring and they felt that they don’t wanna break up the team and so the decision was made to repackage him.

Another reason for the Rhodes Brothers’ heel turn was that it was rumored that The Ascension would be called up to the main roster to feud with The Usos, but after the failures of Adam Rose and Bo Dallas, it seems as if though WWE Officials are very hesitant to call up anybody from developmental right now. Your thoughts?

    • David C

Anybody that truly thinks Bo Dallas is a failure is somewhat deluded.

The character has done everything it’s supposed to do in regards to making people want to punch him in the face.
If they booked him as they have Rusev but had it play out more like some classic Eddie Guerrero endings it would have made for more compelling television.

  • LeBron

Oh you’re cool now because you said “Cena sucks”. I’ve never heard that before.

    • Lebron James

Guess I gotta chose a different name from now on. SMH.

  • Bob’s Diner

WWE dropped the ball with Cody Rhodes big time. Guy was over in a big way before they decided to sacrifice the Rhodes brothers to the overrated nostalgia of the Old Age Outlaws

    • David F

they are also dropping ball with Bray Wyatt. Lesnar not going be around for long and you need Wyatt as next top monster heel.

    • Jin

Nobody gave a damn about Cody Rhodes. at least now he has a persona

  • John

WWE have done nothing with Bray Wyatt since WrestleMania.. Why would they care about hurting him? He’s just another midcarder at this point.

    • Robert Olley

      a certain christopher would disagree

      • John

Jericho? I’m sorry but it’s 2014. Beating Jericho is not meaningful.

    • Jin

Richard’s been riding Cena’s D*** so hard lately, he propably has an excuse for that RAW squash match too.

  • Padres4life

why are they riding Cena hard again? are they worried that people havent bought into Reigns as much as they thought? Reigns seems to be failing to me..Bryan and Ambrose are more successful

  • Gary Robert

I know it won’t happen, but I feel Lesnar needs to make Cena tap to progress both characters in a fashion that neither has ever seen. Cena needs to lose the unshakable belief he has in himself, needs to tap, needs to question himself and then to lose more matches afterwards. I want to see a super aggressive Cena take it to Brock, only to lose by tap-out. That’s just the writer AND fan in me.

    • Robert Olley

But cena already questioned himself in the bray wyatt feud. Everytime he has he always comes back after a week cause wwe seem to think he’s the ratings savior. The only thing i want to see from cena now is a heel turn he is excellent in the ring when put with other good wrestlers like kane, punk, wyatt and bryan but his character has been long played out now

  • Lesnabis Marcel

Why WWE is riding up Cena so quickly? Because he’s the sole man able to fight Lesnar in nowadays WWE roster. Did you really want a part-time bully brute as the WWE face? Look at WWE poll. 47% wanted Cena’s win! are they only children. don’t think so.
