Cain Velasquez announced during a media conference call on Wednesday to unveil the new Mixed Martial Arts Fighters Association that he has already scheduled his next surgery after his fight against Fabricio Werdum at UFC 207 on Dec. 30, 2016.
Velasquez didn’t elaborate on the nature of the surgery or whether it’s minor or major but any news of surgery is significant.
The winner of Velasquez vs. Werdum is expected to challenge UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic, who has not fought since September. Should Velasuez defeat Werdum and need time off after surgery, it could send UFC officials scrambling for an opponent for their current heavyweight champion.
Velasquez (14–2) has fought for the UFC since 2008 and this will be his eighth surgery.
