McGregor, the reigning UFC middleweight champion, isn't expected to fight for the UFC through May due to the birth of his son. The promotion confirmed last Saturday during the airing of UFC Fight Night 101 that he had relinquished the UFC featherweight championship. He has not commented publicly about it.

As to why McGregor would want to box, the media has been driving a fight between him and Floyd Mayweather Jr. It's unknown if that would ever happen or if McGregor would box someone else but he's officially a California boxer and can now legally fight in the state.
