Matt Mitrione was a guest on MMAJunkie Radio on Monday where he claimed he was as surprised as the fans when Fedor Emelianenko appeared at Bellator 165 and was announced as his opponent for the Bellator 172 main event.
“It was such a surprise,” Mitrione told MMAjunkie Radio on Monday. “Honestly, I thought it was going to be ‘Rampage.’ And he started to walk out in that sweater of all things, I thought, ‘Oh, good God, this is great.’
“Totally legit – I was under the impression that Fedor was having issues in M-1, and there wasn’t going to be a co-branding with Bellator. So I was under the impression that Fedor wasn’t the scoop, and I also heard that Fedor was fighting Shane Carwin.”
Mitrione (11–5), who has won both of his fights in Bellator (KOing Carl Seumanutafa at Bellator 157 and TKOing Oli Thompson at Bellator 158) thought he was going to get Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. Instead, he’ll face an even bigger name in Fedor Emelianenko in what will ultimately be one of the biggest fights in Bellator MMA history.
Bellator 172: Fedor vs. Mitrione will take place on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at the SAP Center in San Jose, California. It will air in prime time on Spike TV. We’ll have complete coverage here at WrestlingNewsWorld.com.
