Roy Nelson was issued a nine-month suspension by the Brazilian Superior Justice Court of MMA (STJDMMA) for assault and unethical behavior after kicking referee “Big” John McCarthy at UFC Fight Night 95 in Brasilia, Brazil on Sept. 24, 2016.
After Nelson defeated Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, he kicked McCarthy because he felt McCarthy took too long to stop the fight. Nelson later apologized but said that he wouldn’t take it back.
Nelson could have faced as long as a 25-month suspension and $40,000 fine, however, he accepted the nine-month suspension, retroactive to Sept. 29 in addition to a $24,000 fine. Nelson claimed in his defense that he never intended to hurt the referee.
He'll be eligible to fight again after June 29, 2017.
