It appears as if Cody Rhodes was not warmly accepted by everyone when he was chosen as Kazuchika Okada's challenger to the IWGP World Championship at the first independent United States NJPW show in history.

Even though Cody has found success in the WWE and across multiple independents, he still received some online backlash for being Okada's challenger rather than a New Japan mainstay or someone who had a string of "five-star matches" prior to the recent title bout.

Keep in mind that New Japan has only had four people as champions (including Okada) in 6 1/2 years so a lot of people felt that the title wasn't being maintained in an elite class like former champions AJ Styles, Hiroshi Tanahashi & Tetsuya Naito.
