It comes with great sadness for us to report that legendary Memphis personality Lance Russell has passed away after breaking his hip in a fall on Friday and a lengthy battle with cancer.

Russell was seen by many as one of the greatest announcers of all time, spending a great deal of time in the Memphis territory and also a short stint in World Championship Wrestling as well. He was often given the moniker "banana nose" for his prominent proboscis and even had a whole song recorded about it in 1983.

His association with Jerry Lawler is one that lasted many decades and he was, in fact, the King's first choice of person to induct him into the Hall of Fame before the company ultimately went with William Shatner.

He will be long remembered by his friends, family and fans.
