I had the opportunity to speak with indy wrestler Stephen Wolf on May 16th at Central Illinois Pro Wrestling's "Survival" in Kincaid, Illinois, to discuss his career, where he wants to go next, and more. Below is a full recap of the interview:
How did you get your start in wrestling?
Stephen: I started in November 2014. I met a guy named Jonathan Napier at the place I worked, and we kind of hit it off. He told me he owns his own wrestling company, and that I should come and try out. I did, and there I met Tracy Smothers, and he trained me for a couple months. I got my first match within four or five months.
What has been your favorite match or moment of your career so far?
Stephen: My favorite match so far would probably have been here in Kincaid, I had a singles match with Corbin Blaze, and I thought that that match was so far my absolute favorite match. We got everything down that we needed to and it was fantastic.
Is there anyone in particular that you have modeled your in-ring character, style, or finisher after? Was there anyone that interested you in pursuing a wrestling career?
Stephen: Mostly I try to stay as original as possible, but of course everybody has to look up to somebody. Who I looked up to the most growing up was probably Shelton Benjamin because of his agility, his style in general. He's a high-flyer, but technical, also. Nowadays, I watch more of King Ricochet, or Prince Puma in Lucha Underground, and Angelico, which is in AAA Mexico.
Heel or babyface?
Stephen: Babyface all the way. Gotta love the roar of the crowd when they are screaming at you.
What are some of the best and/or worst things about being on the road?
Stephen: The best things are just bonding with your fellow wrestlers, swapping stories and just having a good time. The worst things, I would have to say is having to cramp into a little car. Nothing too bad about it, mostly good things.
What wrestling promotions do you watch?
Stephen: I watch WWE, NXT, Lucha Underground, a little bit of TNA, and Ring of Honor.
What's your favorite type of music?
Stephen: I listen to mostly hip hop and R&B.
Do you have any pre-match rituals? How did you prepare for your opponent earlier tonight?
Stephen: Before my match, I always stretch to make sure I'm nice and loose, and I always pray. Originally, I was supposed to face a tag team with me and my partner, but ended up just being one of them, so it was kind of different for me because we had to switch up our style.
Are you a subscriber to the WWE Network? If so, what's your favorite thing to watch?
Stephen: Yeah, I've been a subscriber since day one. NXT.
Do you have any advice for others that are breaking into the business?
Stephen: Don't listen to people that tell you "you can't." Don't just think that because nobody else wants to do it that you shouldn't do it. Because there's going to be people that say "hey, don't do it, pursue an actual career, and not your dreams." But who cares about that when all you want to do is wrestle? If you eat, sleep, and breathe wrestling, then the only logical thing to do is wrestle. And that's why I do it, because I love it.
What are your goals for the future, and what do you hope to accomplish next?
Stephen: Right now, I'm aiming for a spot on the DREAMWAVE Wrestling main roster. I can't express how much I need to be on there, both to further my career and to learn from some of the best Indy wrestlers around.
Hopefully, I can start getting more bookings around Illinois, and then go national. And then one day, get on that main roster spot in WWE. It's going to be a lot of work, but I know I put it in.
Stephen Wolf and Corbin Blaze, known collectively as Dusk Till Dawn, will face the team of Outcast Nation at CIPW's "Redemption" on June 13th in Kincaid.
