The rumor:The Undertaker is returning to WWE for the first time since Wrestlemania 31 this week in order to build to a match at this year’s SummerSlam pay-per-view.
How it started: On Thursday, word leaked that Undertaker was in the preliminary plans to work a match at SummerSlam on August 23, 2015 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. In order to begin the build, Undertaker is rumored to appear on this week’s episode of Monday Night Raw in Kansas City, MO. As we previously noted, he is very much in in-ring shape.
What we’re hearing:We were told last Thursday that WWE had booked travel arrangements for The Undertaker for this week’s television. According to a source, Undertaker was scheduled to be in St. Louis on Sunday (today), which is where Battleground will emanate from. A hotel has been booked, with Undertaker’s departure date set for July 21, 2015 (the day after Raw).
What to expect: At this point, we CANNOT confirm Undertaker will be appearing at tonight’s Battleground pay-per-view. It’s certainly possible, however, WWE could have also flown him into St. Louis early in order to keep people from spotting him in Kansas City tomorrow. The goal in WWE will be to keep him as secretive as possible in order to surprise fans with his re-debut for their biggest event of the summer.
In addition to Undertaker, there is also a good possibility Sting will work SummerSlam as well. Does this mean we’ll see Undertaker vs. Sting at SummerSlam this year? In order to answer this question, we’ll go back to to a Wrestling News World Premium report from July 9, 2015:
Vince [McMahon] is starting to sour on Undertaker vs. Sting, fearing that two older guys could struggle to live up to the hype and maybe the company would be better off giving them younger opponents that could help carry them rather than putting them in against each other.
Knowing this, it’s certainly conceivable the match happens at SummerSlam in a slightly lower leverage situation. It would also be possible for both to work younger opponents at that show as well. There are multiple possibilities, with answers expected over the next 48 hours.
At this point, it can be expected to see The Undertaker on WWE television this week, with appearances at either tonight's Battleground pay-per-view or Monday's Raw. Plans are always subject to change and the main takeaway is it looks like Undertaker is returning to WWE earlier than expected.
