Sasha Banks: NXT Women's Champion

You must be living under a rock if you haven't heard all the buzz about NXT by now. The roster is filled with some of the most talented performers from all over the world. One thing that has stood out above all else is the women's division. Ever since the very first NXT live special, ArRIVAL, the NXT Women's Championship Match has been considered "match of the night." This week, at NXT Takeover: Rival, we witnessed the crowning of the third NXT Women's Champion, Sasha Banks.

I started watching NXT in 2012 when it was re-branded as the new developmental territory down in Orlando, Florida. By the end of 2013, the women's division consisted of Paige, Summer Rae, Emma, Sasha Banks, Bayley, and Charlotte. The first of those three listed have gone on to find some kind of success on the main roster, while the last three are flourishing in NXT right now. When I first saw Sasha Banks wrestling, she immediately reminded me of AJ Lee because of her brown, wavy hair and her size. Quite honestly, I didn't see much her ring work to get excited about.

Banks didn't have a direction in her career until she joined The BFF's with Summer Rae and Charlotte. As tag teams and stables always do, there came a breaking point and they went their separate ways. Sasha Banks became The Boss of NXT, while Charlotte went on to win the NXT Women's Championship at Takeover last May. Charlotte defended against Bayley at Takeover: Fatal 4-Way in September. After that, Banks felt it was her time to shine. Becky Lynch, who hadn't been on TV for very long, turned heel and joined forces with Sasha as The Boss targeted Charlotte's NXT Women's Title. At this point on December 11th, at Takeover: R Evolution, I still hadn't seen what Sasha Banks could fully do in the ring. I knew a singles match for the title against Charlotte was exactly what Sasha needed to prove to me that she deserved to win the title.

Their match blew me away and I was finally a fan of Sasha Banks. Her ring work, her look, and her theme song were perfect. Her theme song fits her so perfectly, I'll even write out some some of the lyrics here:

And I've had visions of sitting high on my own gold throne
Never listening to criticism
I built my own from the bottom
I've gotten myself in my own zone
Never stop and I made it, and now I ain't going home

Had a dream I hadn't made it,
now there's nothing dragging down me now
Cause a girl gonna push it all out the way

Sasha Banks doesn't care who or what stands in her way, and she proved that at Takeover: Rival.

A four-way match pitting Charlotte against Sasha Banks, Bayley, and Becky Lynch was set for Rival. Knowing what great matches these women have been putting on lately, this was sure to be awesome. Of course it delivered in the end when Sasha Banks pinned Charlotte to win her first NXT Women's Championship. I was writing live coverage of the show here on WrestlingNewsWorld.com and I had a brief moment where it felt like time stood still watching her hold up that belt. After the match, Charlotte offered her hand and Sasha instead hugged her! Now if that doesn't give you warm fuzzies, I don't know what will! It felt just like that moment at NXT ArRIVAL last year when Cesaro and Sami Zayn hugged it out after putting on a clinic.

The women in NXT are out-performing WWE Divas week in and week out. It feels like this Vince McMahon vs. Triple H war isn't going to be over anytime soon either. Maybe this is Hunter's vision for the future? It sure would be nice.

As far as Takeover: Rival goes, I think it was better than Takeover: R Evolution. R Evolution's ending, though, was better, in my opinion. I absolutely loved seeing Itami vs. Breeze, Balor vs. Neville, Buddy and Murphy vs. The Lucha Dragons, the four-way Women's Title match, and Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens. While I'm glad to see Kevin Owens is the NXT Champion, I still wish Zayn could've had a longer reign. Overall, it was a fantastic show. I'm looking forward to seeing Sasha Banks dominate as Women's Champion. The future is here.
