The Royal Rumble, the first stop on the road to Wrestlemania, and the stop with the most impactful implications on the biggest show of them all. The buzz surrounding the show is undeniable, who will win? Well I do not have the answer for you but I would love to delve into the potential outcomes and let you know my two cents on it!
Now if we’re going to work out a winner, I think breaking it down into simple questions and working toward an eventual outcome will be the best way of working something out. So, will it be a RAW victory, or Smackdown? Personally, with the shape Wrestlemania is looking to take, I would edge this toward Smackdown. With Reigns dropping the Intercontinental championship to The Miz, it would appear that he is on a collision course for a Universal championship opportunity. It would not surprise me if we were looking at a Brock Lesnar v Roman Reigns rematch.
With that being the situation over on the red side of Wrestlemania, it poses the question who will be champion going into ‘mania for the Blue? This really boils down to if you see Kevin and Sami walking out of the Rumble with the championship. I cannot see it myself, so I think we are looking at AJ Styles defending. With what we have come up with so far, we now need to look at stylistically who would match up with Styles (no pun intended, I promise). Looking down the Smackdown roster, I think you can look no further than Shinsuke Nakamura. With the monumental clash they had in Japan at Wrestle Kingdom sending the shockwaves round the wrestling world that it did, it would almost be foolish for WWE not to try to replicate it at some point, and what better point than the grandest stage in Sports Entertainment!
That would be the logical answer, but well as we all know this is WWE and things are not always logical. This brings me on to wildcards for the Rumble. With Nakamura being the A pick, I think it is time to have a bit of fun with a B and C or even maybe a D, if that D was to stand for Daniel Bryan. Yes that is correct, with the rumours that have been flying around recently and his story arc the past few months increasingly suggesting that competition is on the horizon for Bryan, what better way to interject him back in then to have him win the event fans have always clamoured for him to win?
In terms of match ups, Bryan v Styles at Wrestlemania would be a real five star contender and surely would be match of the night given they are allowed to set up correctly for it. WWE does not always need a hero and a villain to set up for a good story, sometimes you just need two of the best that have ever laced up a pair of boots to go at it. If this was the outcome I wish good luck to whoever would have to follow this one!
This is not the only Rumble of the night, for the first time ever we are also seeing a female Royal Rumble match. The winner of this one is far more difficult to plot out. If what is being whispered through the grapevine is to be believed, then we could be looking at former UFC champion, Ronda Rousey taking the spoils setting up a potential clash with either Flair or Bliss. Do I think this would be a good route for the business? Not so much. The female competitors in the WWE have really stepped up to earn their opportunities like with Money in the Bank so to have an outsider with no former professional wrestling experience win it just because of who they are would be a slap in the face to those who have worked so hard for this.
So, how would I book it? Well, that is a great question! I would steer toward a Wrestlemania triple threat, featuring Alexa Bliss, Asuka and my winner of the Rumble… Nia Jax. What I could see happening, is Alexa getting involved in the match taking out Asuka, leading to a Jax victory. This would bring up the whole Asuka being cheated and leading her down the path of the formerly mentioned Daniel Bryan truly cementing her as a crowd favourite and face of the women’s division.
Shinsuke Nakamura and Nia Jax. Those are my picks, please let me know yours by leaving a comment below! Agree or disagree, let me hear your opinion and if you had creative control for the Royal Rumble, what would you do?
