With SummerSlam right around the corner, there's been a lot of internal debate within WWE about the finishes for the matches, particularly the WWE Universal and WWE World Championships. While talk has slowed a bit on trying to rush Brock Lesnar into the octagon by the end of the year, when WWE was aggressively pushing for Lesnar's UFC return to occur as soon as possible, the plan was for Samoa Joe to walk out of the Barclays Center as the new WWE Universal Champion.
With Lesnar preferring to wait until 2018 before fighting Jon Jones in UFC, Joe is still being considered for a Universal Title run this year, but not necessarily beginning at SummerSlam.
There have been reports of the finish for the SummerSlam Universal Title match being kept top secret and it is true that none of the writers or producers have been told anything in regards to who will be winning that match. On the SmackDown side, who will win the championship match has been discussed among the creative team, with VinceMcMahon making it known he prefers for Jinder Mahal to retain.
But on the Raw side, Vince has not given any indication to the writers or the producers of what his plans are and even his plan for Joe to win the title if Brock was going to have to leave to train for UFC was only discussed among his inner most circle. Brock was aware of the previous plan of Joe winning the title, which Brock had no issue with as it was going to be Roman Reigns taking the pin. If Brock isn't fighting Jon Jones until next year, Brock being pinned is much less of an issue than it would have been had he been set to fight Jones in a few months.
