Thomas Fenton Reports:
One of the major reasons Cody did not win the Ring Of Honor Championship at Best in the World is due to ROH did not want their world champion losing in the main event of a NJPW show, let alone a show that was being featured on AXS in the United States. ROH knew that they had to get the title off of the injured Dalton who will be out for sometime due to him rehabbing injuries. It was discussed for a moment to put the title on Marty Scurll, however, with Marty’s deal up in November, and his real-life girlfriend Deonna already signing with WWE, paired with him moving to the Orlando area recently, the writing may already be on the wall with his next move.
ROH chose to keep the titles on talents that were all under long-term contracts to their company. The Briscoes, Punishment, and then the following night, putting the championship on Jay Lethal.
At one point ROH wanted to showcase their titles at ALL IN by having many Bullet Club members holding them, but recently there seems to be some resentment on the ROH side with maybe even some jealousy in regards to how big of an event that ALL IN has become.
With the upcoming contracts of many talents in ROH, mostly members of the Bullet Club, discussions of renewals have not even been a talking point. Talents know that will be free to discuss many options with other companies in regards of to their services maximizing their value. ROH is aware that the company has little leverage when it comes to new deals and will just have to wait and see how the chips land.
