The objective of this week's Smackdown taped from Toledo, Ohio was to finish filling out the Elimination Chamber match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at the pay-per-view next month, while also writing Christian back into storylines after a five month absence as the result of a concussion.
In other storyline-driven news, WWE wanted to continue to push The Shield vs. The Wyatt Family as a match was setup for the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view. Furthermore, this week's show featured Titus O'Neil turning heel on Darren Young and another WWE Tag Team Championship match was setup for next week's Monday Night Raw - this time in a steel cage.
Below are my notes on how it all went down:
In the opening segment, The Shield made it clear they wanted to be in the Elimination Chamber match and they would have qualified had it not been for The Wyatt Family's interference in the Raw main event. Dean Ambrose argued with Roman Reigns over Reigns eliminating him from the Royal Rumble. Seth Rollins quelled the disagreement, pointing the attention to The Wyatt Family. Vickie Guerrero interrupted and then Triple H. While Vickie was inaudible due to heat, Hunter told the faction he understood but they needed to "let it go." Rollins told him they didn't need his approval. When Reigns got in Hunter's face, he finally gave them a match against The Wyatt Family at the pay-per-view next month. Triple H said he hoped they understood what they were getting themselves into.
Antonio Cesaro w/Zeb Colter beat Dolph Ziggler to qualify for the Elimination Chamber match. Cesaro picked up the win following The Giant Swing and the Neutralizer in bout where they also worked outside of the ring.
Fandango w/Summer Rae beat Xavier Woods w/R-Truth & The Funkadactyls. The Toledo crowd was Fandangoing during the bout and Fandango continued to assault Woods after the match conclusion. Truth jumped in the ring and made the save.
Curtis Axel & Ryback beat The Prime Time Players. The interesting note in this was Titus O'Neil turning on Darren Young . After the match, Titus walked out, prompting Young to get on the mic and ask why. He explained they were like brothers. O'Neil said he came to WWE to be champion and he's getting rid of the dead weight. A beatdown ensued with O'Neil assaulting Young inside and outside the ring. Young's mouth was busted open before the confrontation but he was left in the ring by his now former partner. As for the match itself, it was only a few minutes with Titus never tagging in.
Christian beat Jack Swagger w/Zeb Colter in an Elimination Champion qualifying match after hitting a Frog Splash. Christian debuted a new t-shirt and was over as a babyface with the crowd. Colter was on commentary and got into with Swagger after the bout, similar to the "frustrated coach" stuff they did on Raw.
Kofi Kingston beat Damien Sandow with SOS. Kofi was over but there wasn't much to this.
Backstage, Christian made it clear in an interview with Renee Young that his opportunity to become champion was closing and he was going to do what it took to win the Elimination Chamber match.
Cody Rhodes w/Goldust beat Road Dogg w/Billy Gunn with a Disaster Kick. Rhodes worked hard but it was Road Dogg that impressed again on the stick. Before the match, Triple H announced that The New Age Outlaws would defend the WWE Tag Team Championship in a steel cage match against the Rhodes brothers on next week's episode of Monday Night Raw.
The Shield beat Rey Mysterio, Daniel Bryan and Sheamus when Roman Reigns speared Mysterio and pinned him. Prior to the match, The Wyatt Family appeared on the big screen and Luke Harper got a turn on the mic, furthering their program leading into next month's pay-per-view.
Daniel Bryan beat Bray Wyatt in a dark match main event via disqualification when Luke Harper and Erick Rowan interfered on behalf of Wyatt. Rey Mysterio and Sheamus ran out and made the save, ending the night with "Yes! Yes! Yes!" chants [with Daniel Bryan] to send the crowd home happy.
