WWE Tag Team Championship #1 Contenders Tournament Finals
Enzo and Cass vs. The Vaudevillians
The Finish: Enzo hit the ropes wrong and the match was stopped due to injury.
Pass or Fail? No contest
Why? This one ended way before I could pass down any real judgement on the match. I am, however, happy to report Enzo has been discharged from the hospital having only suffered a concussion and is going to be just fine, which is a massive relief.
Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn
The Finish: Owens counters the Helluva kick and connects with a Superkick and Pop-Up Powerbomb for the win.
Pass or Fail?Pass!
Why? This match was absolutely fantastic. What's even more amazing is that this match was obviously only the tip of the iceberg. These two men can tap into so much more, and this match was still head and shoulders above the rest of the card. I can't wait to see them go at it again and again and again and again. They could wrestle straight through to WrestleMania 33 and I'd be ok with it.
WWE Intercontinental Championship Match
The Miz vs. Cesaro
The Finish: Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn's war with each other made it's way to the ring, distracting the ref while Miz tapped, then allowing Miz to roll up Cesaro to retain.
Pass or Fail?Pass!
Why? A very creative way to have the Miz retain and I'm all about the style points! Miz dropping the championship so early would have been bad for Miz and bad for the Intercontinental Championship. This way Cesaro didn't look bad and we can get a broader Intercontinental Championship picture. I'm completely happy with this outcome. Big picture pleaser in my book.
Chris Jericho vs. Dean Ambrose
The Finish: Ambrose landed Dirty Deeds to pick up the 1-2-3.
Pass or Fail?Pass
Why? This one passes but just BARELY. If Jericho had picked up the win it would've been a fail. The match itself was a fail as far as I'm concerned. It felt like Jericho was just going through the motions with this match and it resulted in a boring match that felt like all build and no climax. Let's hope Ambrose and Jericho don't go back for a part 2 at Extreme Rules. Ambrose got the win and he sorely needed one, but now that he has, let's move on and get him more wins elsewhere.
WWE Women’s Championship Match
Charlotte vs. Natalya
The Finish: Charlotte locked in a sharpshooter on Natalya and they rang the bell in a "Montreal Screwjob" style finish.
Pass or Fail?FAIL!
Why? What the hell were they thinking with that finish!? WWE recreated the Montreal Screwjob with Bret Hart standing at ringside to watch. I don't care if they did run it by Bret, that was a pointless and disgusting ending to a match that DIDN'T NEED IT! The match was really very good, I have no idea why WWE felt the need to shove this terrible ending onto the end. I'm furious at the blatant disrespect for Bret Hart and the whole Hart family here.
Vince McMahon's big announcement
The Finish: Vince announced that both Stephanie AND Shane would be running Raw.
Pass or Fail?Fail
Why? The segment felt long and was probably extended due to the opening match being cut short. As a result, though, the announcement that Shane and Steph would be sharing the responsibility of running Monday Night Raw felt drawn out and anti-climatic.
WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match
Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles
The Finish: The match saw AJ beat Roman by count out when he connected with a Phenomenal Forearm that put Roman through a table. Shane McMahon came out and restarted the match with no count outs. Then, AJ beat Roman by DQ when Roman accidentally (?) hit AJ with a low blow. This time, Stephanie came out and announced it was No DQ. This prompted visits from Gallows and Anderson and the Usos. The finish saw AJ connecting with a huge Phenomenal Forearm and then a springboard 450 splash but can only get a 2 count. AJ goes for the Styles Clash but Roman fights out and Styles goes for another Phenomenal Forearm but Roman ducks it and connects with a Spear for the win.
Pass or Fail?Pass
Why? Ohhh I can feel people hating on me already for passing this match. Even though the finish suffered from a little bit of overbooking, I think the match was solid. AJ hit enough offense that I was on the edge of my seat thinking, "Maybe this is possible!" Sadly, it wasn't in the cards for AJ tonight. The longer the match went the more questions arose. Can AJ pull this off? Will Roman turn heel? Will Gallows and Anderson turn on AJ? Will we see Finn Balor? My heart was pounding the whole "third" match. If a match can make my heart pound, then it is a pass in my book, regardless of how I feel about the outcome.
