We've heard it once. We've heard it a million times. John Cena has heard it even more than that. Of course, I'm talking about the idea that Cena 'buries' young talent in that after they are done feuding with Cena and he usually comes out on top in the end, they seem to dwindle on the card and never really hit that level of success again. Cena addressed these criticisms during an interview with The Wrap while promoting the second season of American Grit:
“This is why I have the reputation of quote-unquote ‘burying younger talent,’ because I will let them do whatever they want with me and then after they get done, they’re not as motivated. So, it’s not that I sink their ship, it’s that they fail to operate at an elite level. And I’m on to the next person to whom I say, 'Hey man, bring your best punch and I’m gonna punch back' and they don’t take that attitude beyond me.”
Cena also talked about people who say that he is "coddled" by the WWE, saying that he never holds back and he never asks anyone else to do the same. He said that he puts everything on the table and always expects his opponents to do the same.
