Surprise, surprise, the “finalized” plans for Wrestlemania 33 have changed once again. While WWE was trying to leak it out they were going to do Samoa Joe vs. John Cena at Wrestlemania to throw people off for Joe's surprise debut on Raw after Royal Rumble, the updated plans for Cena are now becoming available.
It’s rumored that John Cena, the current WWE Champion, will team with Nikki Bella to face The Miz and Maryse in a mixed tag team match at Wrestlemania 33 in what will be Nikki’s retirement bout. Jim Ross commented on the rumor in his latest blog:
“Rumors abound that John Cena will be in a mixed tag bout at Wrestlemania teaming with Nikki Bella vs Mr and Mrs. Mike Mizanan. Further speculation is that it might well be Nikki's last bout and if so she could retire with her current, significant other, John Cena at her side. It does speak however as to what will be the disposition of the WWE Title that Cena has won or does it essentially say that Cena may well lose the Title at the Elimination Chamber event later this month. If Miz and Maryse cost Cena John's 16th title in some form then the mixed tag concept for Wrestlemania has more credence.”
This makes sense considering two things we found particularly odd about plans for Cena at Wrestlemania 33. For the majority of the past year, Vince McMahon has wanted to do John Cena vs. The Undertaker but changed his mind at the beginning of 2017. Cena was without an opponent and WWE tried to leak out the Samoa Joe rumor last week. Now if the rumors are to be believed, Cena may have requested the shift to accommodate Nikki.
Nikki has been bothered with neck problems and nearly had her career ended as a result. This could be her way of going out on top with Cena by her side. Obviously, as Jim Ross astutely pointed out, the situation with the WWE title would have to be handled.
