Report by Brooks Oglesby of WrestlingNewsWorld.com
Renee welcomes us to the Kickoff panel alongside Booker T and Sam Roberts. Booker hypes his announcement for his candidacy as mayor of Houston, Texas. Roberts says that this is a dream come true for him, to be here at the epicenter of the WWE Universe.
In the Social Media Lounge, Tom Phillips announces that he will be joined by Sami Zayn for a live Q&A. Use #AskSami to send in questions.
Back at the panel, the conversation moves to the Tag Team Championship Match between The New Day and Cesaro & Sheamus. Roberts says he would have been upset had he been in Sheamus or Cesaro's shoes, having to team together after expecting a singles title shot. Booker says, however, that every time he beat up a bully, he wanted to be his friend after. Roberts and Booker pick Sheamus & Cesaro to win the titles.
The conversation moves to the 30-Minute Ironman Match for the Women's Championship between Sasha Banks and Charlotte Flair. Bayley joins the panel to discuss the match. She says that competitors constantly look at the clock, with their minds set on how many falls they can get in the allotted time. Bayley says Sasha has a bigger point to prove than she did in her prior Ironman Match. Booker says this might be the hardest contest in WWE. Booker then asks how Bayley might insert herself into the title hunt, being that this is the end of the line for this feud. Bayley says she's mentally ready for 2017, and she's ready to hug that belt. Bayley picks Sasha to win based on her experience in the match. Roberts agrees, but Booker picks Charlotte to win.
Renee moves the conversation to Seth Rollins vs. Chris Jericho. Roberts says Owens has taken advantage of his friendship with Jericho, but he hasn't relied on it to win, but Booker disagrees. Renee posits that the winner of this match tonight might be the de facto No. 1 Contender for the Universal Championship. Roberts says the WWE Universe wants the match between Rollins and Triple H, but that might lead to problems with Rollins' focus tonight. Booker picks Rollins to win, but Roberts picks Jericho.
Up next for discussion is Sami Zayn vs. Braun Strowman with a 10-minute time limit. Booker says Sami's beef with Braun is stupid. Sami doesn't need Braun Strowman in his life. Roberts says WWE fans want Sami to succeed, but this might be the wrong move for him.
A very serious Sami Zayn is with Tom Phillips in the Social Media Lounge. The first question asks if he has any fear stepping into the ring with Braun. Sami says it would be a lie if he said he weren't a little afraid, but he's very aware of what he can do to Braun as well. The next question asks his strategy tonight. Sami says Braun should be the one strategizing. Sami has an ability to weather the storm that Braun hasn't had to deal with yet. The next question asks what makes Sami different from Braun's other opponents. Sami says he won't stay down. This is not about Braun himself, it's about what this represents. This is about standing up for yourself and doing the right thing, even when people tell you that it's not worth it. With that, Sami excuses himself to go prepare.
Back at the panel, Renee recaps Triple H's announcement in London regarding the United Kingdom Championship Tournament. The conversation moves to the Triple Threat Match for the Cruiserweight Championship between Rich Swann, TJ Perkins, and Brian Kendrick. Perkins joins the panel, and Renee puts over Perkins' social media presence before asking his biggest threat tonight. Perkins says Kendrick's been a big roadblock for him, but he's not going to overlook Rich Swann tonight. Roberts says the WWE Universe thinks Perkins is too focused on Kendrick. Booker says Swann is the favorite tonight, with Perkins pulling up the rear. Perkins says he's beaten two men in one night before, and he'll do it again tonight. These other men want to represent the cruiserweights, but Perkins says he's earned the right to call himself cruiser-great.
The conversation moves to Big Cass vs. Rusev. Booker asks how he would react if he were in Enzo Amore's position two weeks ago. Booker laughs and says Enzo needs to respect Rusev and his wife. Booker says he would've done what Rusev did, but also would've called the police. Roberts said that what Lana did was entrapment. That match, Renee notes, is up next.
Michael Cole, Corey Graves, and Byron Saxton welcome us from the announce table as Lana makes her way to the ring to introduce Rusev. He makes his entrance, followed by Enzo & Cass. Enzo says he's gotta give it to Lana - she's a real femme fatale. But if he really wanted to see what was really underneath the Ravishing Russian, he'd have checked her WikiLeaks. He says he should've asked for his money upfront. He says Rusev has made a lot of dumb decisions. For one, marrying Lana, who will take "half and the kids" down the road. The second was leaving him in the hallway, because he and Cass ain't running from anyone. Big Cass calls Rusev a sloppy jalopy. Enzo puts on a red nose and says Rusev can call him Santy Claus. They call Rusev S-A-W-F-T and the match begins.
Big Cass w/ Enzo Amore vs. Rusev w/ Lana
Cass backs Rusev into a corner and whips him to the other corner. Rusev walks out into a big boot. Rusev rolls out as we go to commercial.
Cass is working over Rusev in the ring. Rusev tries to climb out of the ring but Cass elbows him into the corner. Cass ties Rusev up in the ropes and lands a strike to his back. Rusev tries to retreat again, but this time lands an elbow on Cass. Rusev gains control with a number of punches, but Cass grabs Rusev's boot and lands a scoop slam followed by the Empire Elbow. Rusev reels in the corner and Cass lands a splash. Rusev rolls onto the apron and ducks out to ringside as Cass charges. Cass follows him out as Rusev attempts to flee through the crowd. Rusev lands a knee thrust to the sternum and rushes back to ringside. Lana feigns a leg injury next to Enzo, leading Rusev to level Enzo from behind with a running forearm. Cass goes to check on Enzo as Rusev rolls into the ring, just beating the count. Cass notices too late and is counted out.
Rusev and Lana rush away from ringside as Cass seethes in the ring.
Back at the panel, Renee gives reluctant congratulations to Rusev. Roberts says we just found out that it's great having big friends, unless they're taking care of their little friends. Booker says Cass shouldn't be fighting Enzo's battles, especially over a woman.
The conversation moves to the WWE Universal Championship Match between Kevin Owens and Roman Reigns. Renee brings up the issues between Owens and Chris Jericho and Roberts says the WWE Universe can't believe it - their relationship is like our Ross & Rachel. He wants to believe that it's just another trick up their sleeve. Booker says he's sick of their bromance. Owens is good, and can hold his own on any given night. He wants to see the prizefighter again. Booker says Reigns is in trouble if he underestimates Owens tonight. Roberts says we hear crowd reactions to Reigns. We boo because we know what he can do. He's a soldier, but the WWE Universe wants a one-man army. Booker picks Owens to retain, and Roberts agrees. Renee thanks us for watching as the Kickoff goes off the air.
