WWE Looks Back At Hulk Hogan's Jump To WCW, Internal Turmoil

WWE has an interesting article over on dot com looking at Hulk Hogan's jump from the World Wrestling Federation to World Championship Wrestling. Ric Flair, Jimmy Hart and Kevin Sullivan were quoted in the piece.

“I think Eric [Bischoff] and [WCW] were looking for a change,” Hart said. “The story I got was that Ted Turner was at a point where he said, ‘Let’s try to make some money.’ “

“Eric said to me, ‘How do we get Hogan?’” Ric Flair told WWEClassics.com.

It was Flair that setup a meeting between Eric Bischoff and Hogan on the set of "Thunder in Paradise." Once a deal was done, not everyone was excited. Here's an excerpt from the dot com article:

Everything may have looked good on the outside, but there was a fair amount of turmoil inside the WCW locker room. Many of the young stars envisioned their spots disappearing, especially with the arrival of many of Hogan’s friends, including Brutus Beefcake, Earthquake and “Macho Man” Randy Savage.

“I think some of the younger guys went, ‘Oh my god, Hulk’s bringing some of his own people in. Where are we going to be?’” Hart said.

“They were mad,” Flair recalled.

“The younger guys knew that it wasn’t going to be beneficial for them,” Sullivan explained. “The guys on the cusp of being top stars knew that they were going to be in the background for some time.”

Though some of the younger competitors were upset, many of WCW’s top stars knew that Hogan’s arrival meant more eyes would be on them.

The article looks at Hogan becoming the face of WCW and closes by Jimmy Hart crediting his defection as one of the reasons for the Attitude Era. Below is an excerpt:

Still, as Hart explained, the mass exodus left WWE feeling like they had something to prove after Hogan’s departure.

“They might not have had an Attitude Era if they didn’t have an attitude.”
