A rumor being attributed to a PWInsider report claims that WWE is planning to rebrand the Divas division as the women’s division, including scrapping the butterfly title belt. This has been something that has been talked about over the last couple of years, especially after the success of the new female competitors (Charlotte, Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch, etc.) as well as the success of women fighting in UFC (specifically, the success of Ronda Rousey).
The idea that I’ve heard is to get behind the women on main roster WWE programming every bit as much as what they’ve done in NXT.
This obviously has ramifications as the WWE Divas Championship belt has sold well on WWEShop.com and WWE has essentially created an entire brand around the term “Diva.” However, the Total Divas reality series on E has seen a considerable decline in overall viewership this season and many fans have pushed for the end of the term Diva (along with the belt).
If the rumor holds up to be true, the claim is the change is scheduled for next Monday’s episode of Raw, which will be the fallout from Wrestlemania 32. The Divas Championship will be defended by Charlotte at the pay-per-view against Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch.
