WWEhas announcedPete Dunne will defend the WWE United Kingdom Championship against cruiserweight star Jack Gallagher on Saturday, August 12, in New York City at a Progress event.
This comes after Dunne successfully defended the title over the weekend in Glasgow, Scotland, against Trent Seven, Wolfgang, and BT Gunn at an ICW event.
The announcement brings up a couple of interesting points to address. As we exclusively reported here in WNW Premium in May, WWE and Progress have started to develop a working relationship, and bringing this event to NYC the week before SummerSlam was one of the first steps.
Additionally, WWE had plans for a weekly UK Championship show, but budget cuts are the reason why this show hasn't come to fruition. Obviously this is why WWE is booking and promoting UK Title defenses that are occurring on the independent scene to make sure the title stays relevant.
It's somewhat surprising that a UK Title match was not booked for NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn, especially after the critically-acclaimed bout between Dunne and Tyler Bate in Chicago. However, with all the uncertainty surrounding the future of the UK division, WWE likely put plans for the UK division on NXT TV on hold for now.
